Let's Just Call a Spade, a Spade

David Postman offers some coverage of the looming spending coming from a PAC of Democratic interests (past Sound Politics coverage of the group here and here). Without saying it directly, the underlying message is that a collection of "powerful special interests," to paraphrase a message that has been bandied about lately, is about to unload on Dino Rossi.

The norms of journalistic objectivity necessitate much of Postman's approach, which implies rather than states the obvious turn of events. Yet, it would make for more honest discourse to just speak plainly about what we all know is coming.

"It's still not clear exactly how Evergreen Progress will spend the money."

Yes, it is. They're going to pummel Dino Rossi. With Gregoire and Rossi both on pace to smash their respective fundraising records from 2004, they - coupled with the Republican Governor's Association and the Democratic Governor's Association - will have ample resources to say positive things about themselves. Someone has to do a healthy chunk of the dirty work on the left side of the aisle.

Enter Evergreen Progress:

Governor Gregoire and Dino Rossi both have records and both have positions on important issues that are informed by that record. For months we've heard and read a lot about what some people think about Governor Gregoire's record - it's been pretty hard hitting. I'm pretty sure the folks advancing this line of argument feel justified in their work. What's good for the goose is good for the gander - the truth will get out - and I hope we're part of it.

More blunt translation: "we're going to beat the living daylights out of the other guy."

To Postman's credit, he alludes to this truth repeatedly without directly predicting it, by laying out facts for the reader to connect. Note the extended discussion of the connection between former Patty Murray staffer Rick Desimone, running the PAC in question, and the tactics Murray employed in 2004. Those amounted to torch your opponent first and ask questions later.

All to say, anyone paying attention knows a big, negative expenditure is coming against Dino Rossi. That is to be expected in this much-watched, high-profile contest. But it makes Democratic protestations about the BIAW and Gregoire's own "rock bottom" claim all the more disingenuous. That should be even more obvious as this campaign unfolds.

1. The only truly powerful special interests in Olympia are the democrat front groups, like the teacher's union, employee union and we know the tribes have a lot of sway. Look at what they shook from Gregoire's public tax dollar tree (that's you and me, people), per the Seattle Times. The democrats are lying about the power of the BIAW and don't seem to care that they are propagating this particular lie to the voting public. All they care about is getting their girl Gregoire back in office for more $$$$$$ at your expense.

Meanwhile, Washington's biggest concerns go unaddressed. But hey--what do they care? They got what they bought and paid for in '04. The Times agrees with me about that, btw.

2. You know let's just call a spade a spade. David Postman is not a good reporter. To expect any sort of decent political coverage on his part is like thinking you'll win the jackpot on a kid oriented Washington Lottery scratch ticket.

Not sure why someone who just rehashes press releases merits so much coverage here.

3. Our current Governor is bordering on heroism if this Countrywide fiasco comes down in her favor. Any negatives that may have been implicit in our tribal allowances will simply be forgotten.

5. Unless there is substance to these ads, they won't fly and will be a net negative. Let the Democrats outspend the Rs; people used to think the Ds were the party of the underdog, but now, we will see them dogpiling on....... air and the electorate will see the difference.

All these PACS don't have a product to sell. You can't sell spoiled Red Delicious Apples as Fresh, Crisp Delicious Apples no matter how you dress them up. Gregoire is the rotten apple in the analogy.

Don Ward, at least you have to give Postman some credit for crossing the line (even if on tiptoe) and reporting negatives on the Ds. But wait till September and he will again be in lockstep.

And please provide me the authority the governor of a state has in dealing with Countrywide?

Are you talking about the dog-and-pony show press conference? The one where nobody bothered to ask why it's the governor who's decided to put her face out front?

7. Gregoire's actions for the past 3 1/2 years speak so loud no one will hear what she has to say.

She can't make promises- the voters know she won't keep them.

She can't point to her record- it's absolutely horrid.

She can't cry about special interests because her pockets are lined with special interest money.

She can't talk about bringing people together- she's lead the most partisan state government in history.

What exactly can she say?

Seriously- when they lead with the Sopranos mafia tie on Rossi, it means they are completely blank on what to do.

I expect every thrust at Rossi to completely backfire at least as bad as the Saprano's video and the Rock Bottom accusation. They got nothing.
