Introducing the Clown of the Day Award
It's standard fare in political discourse to deride such-or-such government action as a joke, or to dismiss some politician or other as a clown. But there may be even more truth to these epithets than is commonly realized.

In ancient Rome, satirist Juvenal lamented that the citizens had given up their civic responsibilities and liberties in exchange for free food and entertainment -- "bread and circuses".

Today, it seems, government is the circus, with the bread going mainly to feed the clowns and their friends.

What else should we expect when so many of us demand that government perform impossible feats (e.g. change the climate; lower the cost of health care while stimulating demand; lower the price of fuel while restricting supply; educate the children of uninvolved parents, etc.)? The rational, if ignoble, response of careerist politicians to impossible demands is to create elaborate productions designed only to give the impression that they're making progress on the intractable problems they promise to solve for us. These productions, not coincidentally, end up being perpetual fountains of make-work jobs and patronage for campaign supporters. The tangible results are what they are. But hope, history has shown, inevitably triumphs over experience. Or as is frequently (mis)attributed to P.T. Barnum: "There's a sucker born every minute".

Alas, there's only so much that the rational and productive among us can do to change the nature of politics and government, and to slow, let alone reverse, the creeping encroachments on our liberty and resources. So we might as well at least take the dysfunctions of government as a source of entertainment and get as many laughs out of them as we can.

With the Clown of the Day Award, Juvenal recognizes those on the public payroll for the entertainment they provide for us. The Award won't be bestowed every day, (although certainly there's enough material to draw from). But from time to time, Juvenal will acknowledge a "public servant" who has performed a noteworthy act of foolishness, dishonesty, incompetence, corruption, waste of public resources, abuse of citizens, violation of the public trust, or for being a useless but meddlesome nuisance under the guise of trying to help us, etc.

On with the show. Post your nominations for the first Clown of the Day in the comments, please.

1. Ron Sims - for being the master of doublespeak and blaming his upcoming budget problems on someone else besides himself.

5. Are we getting this hard up for topics of substance?

6. I nominate the eco-clowns of the Democratic National Convention with their "greening director" to test celebratory balloons advertised as biodegradable actually will decompose and their 900 volunteers will paw through every bag (of garbage) before it is hauled away and their No fried food... each meal should include "at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple, and white."

These people are over the top, certifiably, flipping crazy... and Americans are letting them run the country????

Get a grip AMERICA!!!

7. Bravo, Mr. Cynical!

8. I nominate Gov. Gregoire, primarily (but not necessarily exclusively) under the headings of ''waste of public resources'' and ''violation of the public trust'', for giving the Tribes a totally unjustified $140-or-so million windfall exemption from revenue sharing in their gambling operations; and then getting the big bucks contribution from the Tribes via money-laundering by the State (D) party.

SIDEBAR: I'm not blaming the Tribes here: They are playing the game to their maximum advantage; and even if this smells hugely of quid pro quo there is no credible evidence in the public domain that they the Tribes violated the law. But even if no law was explicitly broken, that does NOT shield the Gov from responsibility and culpability in this instance.

9. What about the organizers for the Democrat National Convention- they aren't going to serve fried food?

10. # 8. Methow Ken. Why not include the Tribes in the corruption of the Queen? They are the ones that offered the Bribe. Yes, they are just as dirty in this deal and more so for offering the temptation in the first place. Yes, they are playing the game of corruption to the Max.

11. Yeah Cynical, now that you mention it, that KLOWN kind of looks like David Goldstein. He's certainly on the short list.

12. Senators Obama and McCain for promising something new but failing to lead their campaigns on a substantive and civil debate about what steps the government needs to take in the best interest of the future of our country. "A campaign between Barack Obama and John McCain once offered enormous possibilities for something new. Instead, the two presumptive nominees have opened their campaigns for the White House with what looks and sounds like a repeat of the kind of politics both have promised to leave behind."

13. This is one of the most concise and insightful analyses of the current political climate and description of our descent into socialism I've ever seen.

Very well written. Good Job!

18. I nominate the Klown who submitted post # 17. Apparently he favors the incompetent, corrupt, confiscatory regime that presently occupies our state capitol.

19. I'd like to advance the analogy of the rodeo clown.

In this analogy the bull riders are the liberal establishment, riding on the backs of the bulls (the people), while exploiting the bull as much as possible so the riders can demonstrate their power and control over the dumb animals.

The clown represents the liberal mainstream media, that works to deceive and distract the bulls (the people) keeping the bull riders (the liberal establishment) safe and able to mount the next bulls to ride again.

20. Obama - for his pre-emptive "strike" at the Republicans' non-use of race as an issue in the general election.

21. Great article, Juvenal!

Both left and right have their clowns.

For the left, it is the fear of global warming. It is a problem they can't solve, but they will tax us, and violate our liberty, and enhance their own power while telling us they are doing something about it, though they never will.

For the right, it is the Iraq war. We can't impose democracy or peace on a people who want neither. It is a fool's errand. But the right sells us fear, and tells us they can protect us, when they can't, and our occupation and meddling in the Middle East (which predates the invasion by decades) caused the problem in the first place.

Reality @ 19 is right on as well.
