Subtle

Unless you've been ignoring local political news as of late, you've caught wind of the left-wing whining in the press and on the blogs about the audacity of the BIAW to exercise its right to expend resources in hopes of influencing the little race for Governor we have going 'round these parts.

From the get go such complaints reeked of a double-standard given the guaranteed probability that liberal interest groups galore would wade into the race as well, with precious few flattering things to say about Dino Rossi.

Whadda you know, Postman does some digging through PDC filings and finds:

A new PAC backed by big bucks from the Democratic Governor's Association and local unions has amassed more than $800,000 in the past two months.

The DGA gave $250,000 to the PAC, Evergreen Progress, on May 11. The Service Employees International Union State Council has given a total of $495,000. All but $100 of the rest of the money came from other labor unions and the state Labor Council.

With that much money from the Democratic Governor's Association, a group whose job includes electing and re-electing Democratic governors, it appears this may be a group about to launch independent expenditures on behalf of Gov. Chris Gregoire.

PAC front-man, former Patty Murray Chief of Staff, and current lobbyist Rick Desimone, attempts to communicate with a straight face, saying:

the group was going to focus on "progressive approaches" to health care, the environment and the economy.
I wouldn't categorize us as a group focused on anything other than advancing these progressive issues. I think we will focus on events and choices that people have that will make or break progress on these issues.

But I'm not going to say we're limiting ourselves to any type of communication or advocacy at this point, partly because I don't know all that we'll be doing.

That doesn't even remotely pass the laugh test, though I give Desimone credit for trying. It's only June, so he's not going to come right out and say: "well, we may run an ad or two saying nice things about Chris, but ultimately we're looking to beat the living hell out of Dino Rossi using the political equivalents of a sledgehammer, a blowtorch, and a Bowie knife."

"Advancing these progressive issues"? Cute turn of phrase.

Of course, any such activity is that group's right under our campaign finance laws. Its expenditures and the source of its funds will be reported on, especially given the huge size of their war-chest to date. Those on the right will no doubt take issue with some of the content of their work. The left will do likewise with whatever the BIAW, the Republican Governor's Association, and other interested parties might bring to the table in support of Rossi.

That's fine. But, the license to continue whining about the BIAW is now officially over. If Gregoire can't defend herself with fundraising accumulating at a record-setting pace and with what looks to be a seven-digit independent expenditure on her side - just for starters - then her campaign and its allies have no business even opening-up shop.

1. It's only okay to put money in the gov. race if you're a democrat group.

2. I nominate Gregoire campaign field director Lisa McShane for the 2008 ''most brazen political chutzpah'' award, for when she said:

''Our campaign is different.''

.... of course the year is still young; other contenders could well arise.

4. Keep up the good work Earling. Let's keep it a level playing field and let the voters decide based on the candidates' merit and message, and not those who just throw bombs.

5. @ 1 ~ or laundering it from the casino tribes through the Democrat party directly to Queen Christine. The P-I has a story about Gregoire the Quagmire and her quid pro quo to the tribes. This should be gold to the Rossi camp if they're able to jostle the sleeping Washington state electorate out of its ignorance induced coma.

8.
You missed the fact that the Tulalips gave the Democrat Party $250,000 which in turn gave the Queen $200,000. The Tulalips had all ready given her the maximum allowed under Wa State law. I find it interesting that shortly after giving that money to the Dems, the state gave almost a million dollars to the Tulalips and named them the lead agency to improve the free way access to their mega shopping center. A private developer would have had to pay mitigation fees that would have covered the improved access.

9. From the PI:

"Regarding the potential revenue, the tribes employ tens of thousands of people across the state, mostly non-Indian, who are providing nearly a billion dollars in wages and benefits. They've contributed millions to local governments for local infrastructure programs. They contribute millions to charities. The list goes on and on," he said."

So, the tribes do all of these things and are able to avoid taxes (or revenue sharing, whatever)? Sounds like Boeing and Microsoft could make the same "compelling" case.

10. Eric,
I reserve the right to whine about the sham's, no matter which side does it, when I see someone trying to hide who is attacking. You stated that Postman had "dig" to find out who is behind the PAC's he investigated. This is the problem. The lack of transparancy is my issue. These groups can attack all they want, in my mind, but do it up-front and transparent. Don't hide behind some anonymous sounding PAC or 527 group name. This goes for both sides.

11. "Gov. Chris Gregoire is benefiting from more than $650,000 in campaign contributions from Indian tribes that hit the jackpot in 2005 when she killed a gambling compact potentially worth more than $140 million a year to the state."

We're faced with budget cuts in this state that affect essential emergency services and the Governor is pissing away 140 million annually of our money in order to keep her sorry posterior in the Governors seat? If this isn't worth a look at a recall, I don't know what is.

They want a new slogan for Washington? forget "SayWA", I'd say BOHICA is much more fitting. Bend Over, Here It Comes Again, Washingtonians.

13. tc, I agree with you 100%, but I don't live in an ideal work and things don't work that way. Unfortunately, you have to play "their" game, as ugly as it is.

They will never treat you with respect, so you have to use some of their tactics, but you use facts, fact, and more facts to prove your point.

15. Double standards and tactics used here to shop the story to the local media. Seems like the Democrat party believe they don't have to play fair - as long as they can get away with it.

BIAW is evil because it donates only to Republicans- never mind that union groups only donate to Democrats with money raised from union dues. Moreover, another adverse result of campaign finance reform.

16. BS, KS, the BIAW gives more money than I want them to to the Democrats.
