Via Ambinder, TNR says this is the "worst political ad of the year":
Well, it certainly deserves an entry. It's as if Republican losses in the three special elections this year, and the resulting lessons learned, never occurred.
Let's assume for a minute this is even smart politics for the Congressional District in question (Missouri's 6th). If it is, it's base politics. The message should be conveyed in a targeted manner, such as direct mail and niche radio advertising. In contrast, broad based TV advertising looks like a giant middle finger to independent voters concerned about higher profile issues this election season. Those are the same votes who played a big role in putting conservative Democratic candidates over the top in many 2006 Congressional races. It doesn't help the candidate's web site offers very little in the way of an agenda, period.
That and the ad just isn't very good (um, what's with the dancers?), even before it starts making the rounds of the national scene since it is so over the top. Not exactly the way to win a hotly contested Congressional seat, especially this far from Election Day.

Posted by: Richard Pope on May 20, 2008 09:36 PMThe ad is no more "base" politically than Sen. Fauxbama deeming Sen. McCain's candidacy as a run for "George Bushs' 3rd term". I'm sure Mr. Pope would agree.

But, why waste valuable TV time with an ad that doesn't read well?
