When Life Plays to Stereotype

Via Ambinder, TNR says this is the "worst political ad of the year":

Well, it certainly deserves an entry. It's as if Republican losses in the three special elections this year, and the resulting lessons learned, never occurred.

Let's assume for a minute this is even smart politics for the Congressional District in question (Missouri's 6th). If it is, it's base politics. The message should be conveyed in a targeted manner, such as direct mail and niche radio advertising. In contrast, broad based TV advertising looks like a giant middle finger to independent voters concerned about higher profile issues this election season. Those are the same votes who played a big role in putting conservative Democratic candidates over the top in many 2006 Congressional races. It doesn't help the candidate's web site offers very little in the way of an agenda, period.

That and the ad just isn't very good (um, what's with the dancers?), even before it starts making the rounds of the national scene since it is so over the top. Not exactly the way to win a hotly contested Congressional seat, especially this far from Election Day.

1. So who exactly are they chasing with this ad? Is there a slice of the population there that is "anti west coast"?

2. Sam Graves is the Republican incumbent, who will be unseated by Democratic challenger Kay Barnes in the November 2008 general election. From his campaign website, you would NEVER guess that Graves currently is warming this seat in Congress.

I have to agree with Eric that this ad is definitely BASE -- and BASE in more ways than one.

3. I think the AD is excellent. Dems have controlled Congress for 16 Months and have a very low approval rating. They have done nothing except chase Roger Clemens. Tying Barnes to Pelosi isn't a bad idea.

4. Actually, I think this ad may play well in the "Show me" state. We here in the politically stagnant waters of Washington state can't subjectively guage what goes on in Missouri politics.

The ad is no more "base" politically than Sen. Fauxbama deeming Sen. McCain's candidacy as a run for "George Bushs' 3rd term". I'm sure Mr. Pope would agree.

5. Nothing wrong with shining a light on your opponents shortcomings. Everyone does it. Good luck to Sam Graves.

6. After the California Supreme Court decision that basically threw out the will of the voters on same sex marriages (one of the judges said they were for same sex marriage, but voted against the majority because the action of the court negated the will of the people), the Rs should jump on the issue of judges run wild.

Also, since the majority of the population is against same sex marriage, it is also good fodder.

But, why waste valuable TV time with an ad that doesn't read well?
