About that Cash

Niki Sullivan over at the TNT's Political Buzz blog has offered a preliminary breakdown of the cash-on-hand situation for the Governor's race. By her calculations, Gregoire has $3.8 million after a boffo fundraising month, while Rossi keeps plugging along as well with a tidy $3.1 million in the bank. We'll know for sure on Monday when the PDC reports for April are due.

In the meantime, Sullivan is curious how the Rossi campaign could have lowered its expenses. Easy: less direct mail.

Sources within the Rossi camp have in the past made mention of their heavy use of direct mail. Just about any regular Republican donor and/or grassroots activist in Evergreen State will attest to this. This strategy serves the twofold purpose of building a donor base and stimulating enthusiasm in the grassroots, if done well.

Read down the list of the Rossi campaign's top expenditures, as reported by the PDC, and that focus is obvious. The top twenty outlays are almost entirely on fundraising, particularly to a direct mail firm (Pinnacle Direct).

Such activity has natural lulls during a long campaign, notably after the core of the donor base is built, and especially if large numbers of that base have provided their email address. Thus, less expensive electronic communication becomes a more regular option for staying in contact with many donors.

That seems to be working. Just a few days after announcing the milestone of 30,746 donors on May 5th (surpassing the total of the 2004 campaign), yesterday the Rossi campaign announced its 32,000th donor.

That small dollar base is particularly important this cycle. Many of the usual interest groups and corporations who split their checks or went out on a limb to give to Rossi in 2004 will be obligated to give to the incumbent this time - or sit on the sidelines. Rossi's high number of small-dollar donors is an interesting indicator of strength, but in this case it is also essential to keep his finances competitive.

2. Actually Duffman it has allot to do about allot. I have done some checking too and a good chunk of Gregoire's money and donors are from out of state as where the majority of Rossi's money and donors are from Washington. The fact that 32,000 donors have donated and over 60% being new donors points towards the public may be looking at the Democratic Mantra of change a bit differnetly then Gregoire and company would like.

3. I agree. It's time for "Hope" and "Change" in Washington state after 25 years of Democrat party rule....throw the bums out.

Dethroning the illegitimate Queen in her Olympia palace would be a good start to a new and brighter future for the Evergreen state.

4. Anyone ever read anywhere how many individual donors Gregoire has? Just curious?

5. I see Rossi that is learning about fundraising from the Democrats. Amusing!

6. Or is he learning from the Republican- Ron Paul?

Very practical, too, Cato.

7. Ron Paul, hah! Paulians invented the Money Bomb idea but I think it was Howard Dean who really made internet funding work.

I seem to recall Bob Dole had a website but I don't know if it had a donations section.

8. Whiskey, she has about 21,000.

9. IMFletch 21,000 state workers, and union hacks that is! 600 real people.

Rossi will do fine because of what a complete failure and Liar Gregoire is. She lied about never having raised taxes on the people of Washington when she was running in 2004.

What will she possibly follow that whopper up with in 2008?

I didn't raise taxes on ... everything you own or do?

10. You may be surprised how many State workers are going for Rossi. A lot of the ones that voted for her last time will not do it again.

12. @10: I have a really, really hard time seeing that happening.

13. 12 - Agreed. She's been the best friend state employees has ever had, at least as far as the unions go. She's basically kissed the feet of the SEIU every day for the past 3 years.
