Yep, It's a Bad Idea

We now have local confirmation that the proposed gas tax "holiday" is not good policy. As if this state needs any additional harm given to its already under-equipped roads budget.

State Rep. Doug Ericksen (R-42nd) says:

"If they can eliminate the federal gas tax until Labor Day and still be able to reprioritize their budgeting and cover the cost of our current projects, I think it's a great idea," he said. "If they are going to get rid of the federal gas tax and simply borrow more money to make these payments, I don't think it's a good idea."

I think we all know which of those two scenarios would unfold, even if Congress had the gumption to pass the "holiday," which in and of itself seems far from certain.

1. Wait a minute....

Your guy proposed it. You have to say it's a good idea whether it is or not.

2. Eric,
You will get no disagreement from me on what you wrote. The proposal is pandering at its finest. Let's save people $30, while laying off hundreds of thousands of construction workers, and even worse, letting highway projects set half-done during the summer. So not only do travelers get the heartache of high gas prices, they would also get the heartache of driving around construction projects not being worked on.

Of course, Hillary thinks that the oil companies will foot the bill for the loss. Yeh, like that is going to happen. At least Obama has the common sense, especially after Illinios tried and and saw no difference in gas prices, to call it what it is. What gets me is why McCain is so gun ho for the idea?

3. Yep, you're right...bad idea; I disagree with the lovely and gracious Mrs Clinton on this one! [Does Rush Limbaugh really have a crush on her...I think so! ] lol :)

4. Put down the Berr Duff. It's way to early.

5. What's a Berr Duff?

6. We have legislated our way into this mess. Instead of calling it a "gas tax holiday", we should call it a "holiday from legislative stupidity" and the irony is that much like our politicians the "holiday" won't do anything for the common citizen.

7. Sounds like Army boy had a few too many margueritas last night while celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

8. No Unk. Typed to fast and had to leave before I proof read it.

Nice try though.

9. AM/V meant 'beer', I'm sure :) Little does he realize they won't let me have beer here at Western State (causes too many trips to the bathroom and they don't have the personnel to escort me all the time). However our bathrooms are up to date and modern and don't even come close to resembling the one's at Fort Bragg, NC. :)

10. Ahh come on Duff. Ft Bragg has some nice ones.

LOL.

11. It's actually a great idea if they implement it correctly, you can look at it a couple ways. Either decrease the gas taxes when the demand for the fuel is the highest so that you relieve price pressure for the consumers (and subsequently increase the gas tax when the demand is the lowest to raise the price in the off-season when the gas price is the lowest). Or you go by the philosophy of taxing more when the demand is highest to attempt to shrink demand.

A liberal would do the latter, much like cigarette or alcohol consumption - tax the evil gas consumption when demand is high to try to get less people to drive.

A conservative would look at it the other way - when the price is highest, reduce the tax to get more people to consume, when the price is lowest, tax a little more to make up for the revenues because the people are still willing to pay more.

12. The Great Barrack Obama has spoken- "THE GAS TAX HOLIDAY ONLY SAVES $70 PER WASHINGTON RESIDENT AND IS THEREFORE BAD" as heard on KOL today.

Who is this guy? He doesn't even pay attention in church, but yet he is crunching numbers for the State of Washington?

13. $70 per person? That's $350 in my pocket being that I'm a father of three - SIGN ME UP!

14. As for Clinton's proposal to sock it to the oil companies: Most people don't realize which tax break she wants to get rid of and what it would cost the rest of us.

I own a farm for one of my businesses. I get the same domestic production tax credit that she wants to get rid of. That tax credit was created for the farmers of this country and when it ceases to exist sure the oil companies will get less money but the bulk of the money will come from the small and middle size farmers......nice.

That tax credit is tied directly to the amount of wages we pay our workers, would it have an impact on how much we pay and who we hire? I've only had to hire immigrant workers a couple times in the last 15 years, mostly I stick with citizens, but that could change.

15. For the average person it might not be a lot (although 70 bucks is real money to me) but think of how much a trucker, who hauls your food, fuel and products to market, would save. Now we are talking some real dough.

16. "What gets me is why McCain is so gun ho for the idea?" - tc

"What's a Berr Duff?" - Wiltz

That's what one drinks after going 'gun ho'.

17. So exactly waht is it liberals want? Firs tthey complain our gas is too cheap and should cost mroe like in Europe. Then they complain that it costs too much and want congressional investigations.

Now, when there is a way to make it cheaper, they scream bloddy murder.

I'd like a WASHINGTON STATE gas tax holiday. I don't think pet massage is more important than transportation liek Gregoire does.

18. "Scream bloddy murder"?

I don't hear anyone screaming at all. We just think it's a dumb idea. So do virtually all of the economists.

But what do they know?

19. Its a brilliant idea. Better to talk about this than some crazy notions about increasing supply.

20. "I don't hear anyone screaming at all. "

Really? Then I guess you just aren't listening.
