There will be more to say about the previously discussed record-fundraising hauls being compiled by Dino Rossi and Christine Gregoire once the reports covering April are filed in the coming days. In the meantime, it's worth noting that the Rossi campaign today announced it's 30,746th donor, already surpassing Rossi's total number of donors in 2004. This before the political season in Washington state really heats up.
More evidence we're heading into an unprecedented political contest for the Evergreen State.

This could easily break per-capita spending records NATIONALLY if it keeps going at this rate.
Do you know how many people are new donors?
Posted by: Cliff on May 5, 2008 10:14 PMBetween now and the General Election, expect we can look forward to maximum saturation of political ads in both print and electronic media. Confess the thought of another 6 months of that is enough to make one part of me want to lock the gate to my place out in the woods, disconnect the satellite link, and turn off my wireless router.... on the other hand:
This could get really interesting; at both the state and national level.
ps: 'Come on Hillary' make my (& your) day today in Ind and NC !

Posted by: Duffman on May 6, 2008 06:23 AMIn the end Rossi promised a lot of change and lied about Gregoire proposing a state income tax, and thoroughly enjoyed all the ass-kissing and the low brow humor the "Morons In The Morning" are known for.
Rossi, just another politician promising lots of things he cannot provide.
Maybe you failed to notice the vast difference in numbers between the turnout for the Dem Caucuses vs the GOP Caucuses.
Looking forward to the McCain/Clinton ticket this fall. =)
Let's just assume for a second you are right.
It would STILL make sense to vote for Dino. Gregoigre has proven she can't do anything. I'd rather take a chance with someone who may not be able to do anything then vote for someone who has proven she can't do anything.
Posted by: Cliff on May 6, 2008 01:15 PMIf she's done nothing then why are all the conservatives complaining about her budget increases and children's health coverage program. not to mention the Plan B controversy?
Obliviously she's done something or you would have nothing to whine about. I plan on sticking with her rather than the guy who wants to build roads with magical money that he'll pull out of the air and teach the myth of Creationism as hard science.
Other than of course to vote for a democrat just for the fun of Rush's Chaos of course.
Posted by: gs on May 6, 2008 03:06 PM1. The moniker Ragnar Danneskjold comes from the name of a character in Atlas Shrugged. Atlas Shrugged was written by that very, very, very interesting lady, Ms. Rand. This is what she said:
I cannot project the degree of hatred required to make those women run around in crusades against abortion. Hatred is what they certainly project, not love for the embryos, which is a piece of nonsense no one could experience, but hatred, a virulent hatred for an unnamed object...Their hatred is directed against human beings as such, against the mind, against reason, against ambition, against success, against love, against any value that brings happiness to human life. In compliance with the dishonesty that dominates today's intellectual field, they call themselves 'pro-life.'

So, Rags, as a Catholic, do you support Ms. Rand's philosophy?
2. Perhaps you have some quote which indicates that Governor Gregoire is FOR abortion. I cerainly have not seen such a quote. My understanding is that Christians of ALL denominations excercise free will in the choice of chosing the Christian faith.
Unfortunately, whether it is legal or not, women excericise free will in the choice of whether to carry a child to term. They have to be persuaded to do that if their life circumstances lead them to believe that the choice is not possible. Now this is what Ms.Rand said about altruism:
If any civilization is to survive, it is the morality of altruism that men have to reject."
Ayn Rand quotes (Russian born American Writer and Novelist, 1905-1982)

So, how is this philosophy going to persuade women to carry their child to term?
3. Rand had an interesting view of Catholicism:
"Curiously, Rand's principal interest in religion appears to be Roman Catholicism. She devotes two essays to papal encyclicals. In "Of Living Death," she critiques Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae (which opposed artificial contraception) and in "Requiem for Man" she critiques his Populorum Progressio (a discussion of economics). While non-Catholic religions generally don't have equivalents to papal encyclicals, this attention given the Roman Catholic Church is noteworthy. Rand went so far as to blame the existence of American laws against abortion (which she opposed) on the Roman Catholic Church, even though such laws predated the arrival of large number of Catholic immigrants by decades. [Rand, VOR, p. 59; Robbins, WAP, p. 208.]
Rand's focus on Catholicism likely stems from a belief that Catholicism is the principal opponent of reason and capitalism. Because she had a certain respect for Catholicism's leading philosopher, Thomas Aquinas (who attempts to integrate faith and reason) Catholicism constituted the greatest threat. In "Requiem for Man" she sees Catholicism as the principal rival to communism:
Today, Catholicism and communism may well cooperate, on the premise that they will fight each other for power later, but must first destroy their common enemy, the individual, by forcing mankind to unite to form one neck-ready for one leash. [Rand, CUI, p. 316.]

You must be doing some real mental yoga to be both a Rand clone and a Catholic.
4. I would be interested in any quote you know of that Governor Gregoire is FOR abortion. I believe she is for the legal status quo. Most people I know are not FOR abortion, but other alternatives, like adoption. Still, the woman will excercise her free will, whether abortion is legal or not. It is up to people of faith to persuade them there are other alternatives.
