More Unintended Comedy

I completely understand the notion of combating the coarsening of our culture. As a parent of children ages 11 and 8, believe me I understand.

But this tale of consumer outrage just doesn't seem to have much merit. Finding objectionable content in a store targeted to the hip, edgy, younger set (which extends well beyond high schoolers) is not exactly a groundbreaking turn of events. Next we'll be hearing complaints from stunned parents that adolescent males are enthralled by attractive women with bodacious curves.

That, and how am I supposed to read this story without laughing when the mother in question has the last name "Milfs." Seriously.

1. Marci Milfs? You have GOT to be kidding me.

Is this a porn movie or what?

And incidentally, what was the problem again?

2. The issue seems to be how much pre-adults are influenced by porn, violent videos, and the cultural of Paris Hilton and Ludacres. Grand Theft auto has its latest version out. This is in many ways similiar to the marketing of Mike's Hard Lemonaide which contains alcohol and the Abercrombie and Fitch catalogues which push some boundaries. If you don't think this stuff influences kids, then you probably don't have a problem.

I seem to remember a rant about a father in Michigan who had their child taken away because the child was given the lemonaide at a baseball game. The point is some marketers deceptively package items, which really belong in an adult market, in such a manner as to be attractive to kids.

The issue is whether the kids have enough judgment to understand the implications of what is being pushed their way. The issue has been elevated by the ads of Abercrombie and Fitch:

Fashion Gossip Weekly - 04-01-2008The latest Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue, which features topless teens, is so racy that it is being called catalogue porn. ...

Apparently there is a sleeze race in the apparel market. I do understand this lady's issue. She is attempting to stand against a sleezy culture that is not helpful to parents who are attempting to teach values and judgement to their kids.

5. Can you spell attention whore?

Methinks Ms. Milfs is one.

What a non-issue. I wonder where the assignment editor of the Herald has been, between this the the Stormmy Paul article two weeks ago, three pages of glorifying a crook.
