Gawking at the Naked Loon

Humor is a funny thing.

For example, if you think it worth a chuckle that a previous post of mine received 166 comments - after linking to a webcomic mocking individuals who spend all their time on blogs arguing with idiots who are "wrong on the Internet" - then you might have grown an ulnar nerve during your time spent here on Earth.

So with that in mind a new local news website has broken onto the Seattle scene called The Naked Loon: Puget Sound's Most Spectacular Newspaper.

Unlike ordinary "blogs" such as Sound Politics, The Naked Loon is a real genuine online newspaper much like David Brewster's "Crosscut", only with better writing and an eye towards a target demographic that does not cater exclusively to people who donate money to the Seattle Symphony or NPR.

The site is the brainchild of Seattle Pacific University alum Tim Ellis with aid from fellow contributors J.R. Willett and Peter Newland (making them the medulla oblongata-child and temporal lobe-child for this venture one supposes).

The site went online during the first of this month in time to celebrate the 98th anniversary of Seattle City Light.

A completely serious news venture, The Naked Loon has already broken stories about the next stage of the Boeing Air Force Tanker, the Sonics surprise relocation deal and how local residents are fighting Global Warming.

(Me? I'm fighting Global Warming 1930s-style boxing baby).

With its editorial vitality and online advertising prowess of The Naked Loon comes the question of economics. Since Naked Loon and Crosscut are both serious journalistic endeavors which aren't in any way, shape or form blogs, media insiders are questioning whether Seattle can still maintain its status as a "Two online newspaper town".

There is already speculation of a Joint Operating Agreement being consummated by Brewster and Ellis resulting in an overall reduction of production costs and an elimination of superfluous newsroom personnel such as Crosscut editor Chuck Taylor and The Naked Loon's North Idaho bureau chief and silver prospector Flippy McPete.

Other challenges are still in store for the newspaper. With the proximity of the letter "L" and the letter "P" on the keyboard there is the real possibility of a significant number of late-night readers accidentally being directed to another similar sounding website dealing with unique photo art.

Until the webpaper is bought by Rupert Murdoch or the editorial staff gets devoured by squirrels, The Naked Loon will be on my daily webpage read lodged just above Askaninja.com below Postman on Politics and forty-seven spots higher than Ryan Blethen's "The Democracy Papers".

1. Not a bad site.

Totally, totally better journalistic integrity than the Crosscut.

And, I learned so much more. Nakedloon is now on my everyday read.

2. Hey, thanks for pointing this out Don. I love it. Just hope they can keep it up.

3. Thanks for the post Don, and thanks to the commenters above for the kind words.

Right now the "writing staff" is me and me alone (J.R. and Pete are my "creative consultants"), and I'm posting something new at least once a day. I'll do my best to keep it up.

If you have any funny ideas, be sure to drop me a line (contact page is on the site). I love getting input from others.

4. Yes, I wondered how you could keep up the articles. But, this is an election year. Steve Berens will upset McDermott (if only it could be true), Rossi wins 80% of the King County vote only to lose Eastern Washington and the governorship.

There is the automatic toilets to play with, as well as competitions between Seattle, Everett and Tacomo and Bellevue for this or that.

Keep up the good work and I also hope Don keeps passing on these wonderful new sites.
