"The Dread Series of Letters"

News that Christine Gregoire as well as Patty Murray & Maria Cantwell have sent respective letters to the NBA, urging caution on current deliberations involving the Sonics were difficult to take seriously.

They reminded this Michael Kelly fan of a classic column, especially this passage:

Last week I argued that those Americans who preached pacifism in response to the attacks of Sept. 11 were (borrowing from George Orwell) objectively pro-terrorist, objectively in favor of letting the masters of this attack escape to live and to commit more mass murders of Americans.

This upset some people. One Pennsylvania man issued what in pacifist circles must constitute a violent threat: "You may expect a series of letters from me and other folks in this regard, until such time as you deem it appropriate to issue a complete retraction of, and unqualified apology for, your comments." Please, not the dread Series of Letters.

David Stern has been a real ass to Seattle as of late. Yet, if he chose to greet recent non-binding missives from the Evergreen State with similar seriousness to that which Kelly gave his pacifist antagonist it would be difficult to fault the man.

In the meantime, read that Kelly column and his earlier broadside against the pacifists that led to the work quoted above.

1. Man, of all the things we have to worry about in this stare. SPORTS is not one of them!

2. Let's not forget that the Sonics have two more years left on their lease at Key Arena. Clay Bennett wants to simply 'pay off' the lease, but move the team. However, it has been reported that the language in the contract specifies that the Sonics must actually play at Key Arena. This is very important because the games bring lots of business (money) to the area surrounding Key Arena.
The revenue to the surrounding area was one of selling points made to the public when the Key Arena was redone and taxes put in place.

I understand that there are more important issues, but when we have a tenant for a very expensive building under contract, we should not let them walk out.

3. Maybe they can move their corporate headquarters to OKC and change the name to the Oklahoma City Super Sonics but still play their home games in Seattle to fulfill their contractual obligations. It'll be like Boeing. In the global age we live in, regional loyalties mean less and less so I view this as a perfectly acceptable compromise.

(I'm just kidding)

4. I wish I could own an NBA team. The entire business model is based on someone else paying for your facility. Hell, any business would be great if someone else pays for the facility.

Decrease the salary cap to $12M (none of the players would quit), and you immediately have $40M a year to spend on the facility. Get the owners to pony up some, and you could probably get $60M a year. If the building lasts 25 years, you can build a $700M arena, without charging the taxpayers a dime.

Why does the public put up with this?

5. Rather than run around with a bunch of multi-hundred-million dollar plans for a new or improved stadium, perhaps the city should have purchased the Soncis sometime over the last 40-odd years.

I don't see the Green Bay Packers threaten to move to a newer and better stadium, and perhaps it's because the city owns the team and therefore doesn't have to bend to every owner's whims...

6. Why does anybody care about the Sonics?

7. New,

"I don't see the Green Bay Packers threaten to move to a newer and better stadium, and perhaps it's because the city owns the team and therefore doesn't have to bend to every owner's whims..."

Actually, I believe the fans own the Packers, and that's the way it should be. If pro basketball is such a hot thing in Seattle, then let the fans who want it come together and fund it. No more stadium extortion.

8. Two things, You can buy season tickets for the Sonics tomorrow. If you get on the waiting list for Packers season tickets, your kids may live to collect on them.
Seeing that the gov and our powerhouse senators are riding to the rescue, one can expect the same result as the Boeing tanker deal.

9. #7 is correct. Local fans own stock in which all divdends go back into the team. It should also be noted that the NFL created by-laws that prevent this from happening again...ie local, non-profit ownership of NFL teams. All sports would greatly benefit from fan loyalty if they all would allow local non-frofit groups own and operate sport teams. No more Al Davis huffs and puffs, no more holding fans to inane demands from owners to pay for stadia or we'll move. teams will have true stability.....with fans paying the way. Best way to go on this matter.

10. So, let me get this straight: Seattle has a basketball team?

Posted by: Kent on April 17, 2008 11:19 AM
11. Kent @ 10,

Two of them actually...

12. Glad to hear the three amigos are writing letters of protest again. Talk about "to little to late". Boeing tanker deal last week and the Sonics this week. The one guy who could have, and would have saved both ( SLADE ) was voted out of office. On the plus side all these failures by the three amigos should reduce congestion!

13. They have about as much pull in this nation as a VW in a tug of war with a Hummer.

I would more likely call them the Three Robbing Hoods!

Their Fat Massive Government Pensions, Health Care and continual Government support will be there until they die and most likely longer.

What have they got to worry about!

14. Umm, question: Why is this place working so damned hard to keep a losing team?

Answer: if you are good at something, you should stick with it. Seattle, if nothing else, knows how to support teams that couldn't win championships if their families were held hostage.

You go for it, Seattle! But don't win anything, because then people will expect something better of you!
