Bruce Ramsey follows up to earlier discussions on the issue by reporting on the gap between Obama endorser Christine Gregoire on the candidate himself on the issue.
That gap is neither a small issue nor is it subsiding. Note the Obama campaign's call for the resignation of the Clinton campaign's lead strategist in the wake of him meeting with Columbian officials - on behalf of a separate client - to discuss a pending trade deal with that country. Of course, that deal is close to being held hostage by Democrats in Congress and their allies.
UPDATE: that back-and-forth between the Clinton & Obama camps managed to seriously irritate one of our most important allies in Latin America. Smooth.
UPDATE II: The New York Times editorial page joins the left-of-center chiding of the two Democratic Presidential candidates. Of course, they find a way to pin it obliquely on Karl Rove. Typical.
UPDATE III: Message: working on behalf of free trade is not compatible with working on behalf of a Democratic campaign for President of the United States.
Good message. Thanks for clarifying that one.
Posted by Eric Earling at April 05, 2008 08:09 AM | Email ThisIt will be interesting to see if the Unions who so support CG let it go at this. Is CG really stating that she supports a trade agreement with Columbia even though they have brutilized unions in their country and the trade agreement has no worker protections in it? I am sure her union backers will love this. It is easy to say you are for free trade. It is also easy to say you support unions and workers rights. Unless the paper does it job however, you don't ever get at where CG really stands on the issue when the rubber meats the road. Does she or doesn't she put trade above workers rights? The paper is giving her a pass. Obama has stated his position, whether one agrees or not, that workers rights comes first. Where does CG stand? I am sure the unions that support her would want to know.

Doublethink and the Liberal Mind
" The belief that Barack Obama is a candidate who can "unify" the nation may be the most brilliant example of what George Orwell called "doublethink" in the recent history of the Democratic Party. Think about it: for over thirty, maybe forty years the American public has been variously sermonized and threatened by crusaders in Obama's same party into embracing not unity, but "diversity." Call it what you will - brilliant or duplicitous - it is still a masterful political achievement. "
On Obama as a unifier, I'm looking for specific examples.
