Democrats & Trade

The Seattle Times editorial board takes the Democratic Presidential contenders to task for their selective and convenient positioning on trade. It's about time.

1. When will the media begin to address even more glaring issues, such as national security? Obama the globalist directing foreign policy and serving as Commander and Chief of the United States military? My God, America, wake up!

2. "Eric"

How about the new mess the mayor of Seattle wants to do with paper & plastic bags.

Save the earth my tail. He's looking for more money.

3. Obama would be disastrous for the economy. He's so rabidly left it's scary. Hillary is about as bad, but she's also treacherous. Can't be trusted. She makes stuff up. I read a shocking item about her in Michelle Malkin's blog yesterday which described how Hillary got booted as a 27-yr old lawyer from working on the Nixon impeachment attempt. Because of rank dishonesty. Many have heard in passing that she worked on this project, but few ever knew she was kicked off for being rankly dishonest. Please, don't give us Hillary for prez, either.

4. So from the editorial, it's perfectly OK by the Times if their glorious Democratic candidates campaign in other states against international trade, as long as they simply hit the mute button on that issue in Washington. And we should take the Times' editorial advice for its advanced analytical thinking?

Gov Gregoire is also 'a superdelegate who has endorsed Obama'. Let's have her superior explanation why she should do so, when Mr. O has said he'll vote AGAINST trade agreements with Colombia and South Korea. Oh - all delegates are equal, but some are equaler than others. Only in the (anti-)Democratic Party.

5. 3 Michele -

Hillary was booted partly because she grabbed some public records which contained a precedent supporting legal counsel for the accused Nixon, and placed them where the public could not access them. Then she wrote a recommendation that he not be allowed counsel in the legal process.

This was a pioneering effort by Hillary which led to her concealment of the Rose Law Firm records in the White house when Congress needed to see them. She seems to be a top-notch operative when it comes to concealing evidence, and this sordid part of her political history needs more public exposure. Obviously the laws, for lawyer Hillary, were all designed for other mortals than her superior self.

6. Maybe some of these Democratic newspapers should have vetted their endorsement ahead of endorsing.

Seems they may be having buyers remorse.

At least the Republicans were able to eliminate a couple of their darlings before it was too late.

Obama seems like a person you would play gymrat basketball with. But, I got over that when I was 30, so what did the guy do from then to now? Seems like it was a whole lot of nothing.

I just wonder what type of 'community organizing' the guy did as part of his resume? Everything else seems an embellishment, so why is this phase of his life so secretive? Is there more?

7. #5: We've gotta ask --how did Hillary even get THIS far after doing something so unethical? It would not even occur to me (or you) to try something so underhanded in a legal situation like that! Disbarment seems appropriate! Yet, there she was-- allowed to keep practicing law.

LOL, I think it's called being a DEMOCRAT!

It's not what she did, it's how she felt when she did it. (the dem way)

The news of her firing is a very recent revelation by Jeff Zeifman, the erstwhile general counsel and chief of staff of the committee, who fired Clinton after the case was finished and refused to write her a recommendation (a dubious distinction she shared with only two others in Zeifman's 17 year-career) because, as he puts it, "she was a liar. She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality."

It was his diary entries which recently came to light. Apparently he was enough of a loyal Democrat that he kept mum all through the (Bill) Clinton administration, but isn't willing to keep it up any further.

11.
The Democrats are always 20 years behind on everything.

Globalization is over.

The USA is the only productive nation in the world.

There is almost no value added products coming from ROW (Rest of World) that we need anymore. We can build cars just as good and just as cheap as anyone by a combination of superior management, labor and automation.

Japan is turning into a geriatric state. Toyota sales are down.

China is too busy using every scrap of wood to build housing.

India has been unmasked -- shoddy work, untrained "engineers".

Europe?? Please. Give me a break. What does Europe produce any more?

So, it's all USA. The key is Local not Global. If you can sell to your neighbor you will make more money than selling to some guy in Katmandu.

13. As usual, everyone here and the newspaper just jumps on the headlines without checking the facts. The assumption is an either or position. Either we have to have free and open trade with no conditions or someone is against trade. The problem isn't an either/or topic.

None of the candidates is for isolationism/nationalism trade position where we block trade outright and impose tariffs on everyone, etc. (e.g., Pat Buchanan). None of the candidates (as far as I can tell), also don't think that trade can be used to influence countries behaviors (e.g., total open free willing market). Those that bash the candidates, need to bash specific trade positions and not this general blacket statement.

For example, does the newspaper think we should trade with China no matter their human rights positions and with no control on the quality of their imports. Does the newspaper think trading with countries that employ child labor should be free and open and not a word said? The newspaper is being hypocritical on its position. At least the people hear are a lot more consistent, whether one agrees or not with their position.

This is a stupid opinion piece by the paper.

15. #14 I must repectfully disagree with you. She deserves and WILL be in the White House; this time as the official POTUS, not one operating in the background. When you're on top EVERYone is taking shots at you...obviously NOTHING sticks to her thus they are probably either UNtrue or distorted.

17. The Times editorial is a great example of a business that knows nothing about business (newspapers) editorializing about a subject they are clueless about. If the Times' editors knew anthing about economics or business they wouldn't be in the dire financial straights they are in. So what do they do? Endorse a candidate for president who knows even less. Good grief.

18. When is someone going to take voter fraud to task? I keep getting phone calls from the Obama campaign telling me I'm a delegate or alternate for Obama. I never voted for him. I never would vote for him. I have half a mind to go to the caucus and vote against him again. The Obamaniacs have stolen the election--as well as any Republican could have.

Posted by: LJ on April 3, 2008 03:38 PM
19. Good try, tc. As I constantly mention, "will the real Barry Obama please stand up?" Is it the Obama who tells Ohioans they will get their jobs back because he will rewrite NAFTA? Or is the Obama who whispers to Canada, "Shh, we were only joking. We just wanted to dupe the voters in Ohio"?

20. #15: You need to learn more about your candidate. Please see www.northstarwriters.com/dc163.htm
When you add it to the many other instances of Hillary behaving badly you realize she's been like this for years. We need better in the Whitehouse than the likes of HRC.

I heard today that she said something to the effect of "We need to get past the free-market mindset."
Oh. My. Goodness.

Posted by: Michele on April 3, 2008 04:07 PM
21. Michele @14: Hillary isn't my girl. Duffman may be enamored, but not me. I strictly a McCain and Obama fan, with Obama edging McCain due to having the right judgement from the start on the Iraq War.

Swatter @19: Nice try Swatter. I did not state in my post one way or another with regards to Obama's trade stance. What I stated was that the paper was being a hypocrite. I specifically didn't go into a candidate by candidate comparison because frankly I don't see that big difference between all three of them. Sure, they will play up these minor differences in the general election, but realistically, none is a Pat Buchanan when it comes to trade.

Posted by: tc on April 3, 2008 04:07 PM
22. Michele: @20 Hilary also said she wants to be our "Commander in Chief of the Economy". I think she really does want to declare war on the economy, at least the free market economy.

23. Well Duffman, hate to burst your bubble, but Bill and Hellory are everyday being thrown off the same wagon that Joe Lieberman was run over by a few years ago. Difference is Joe is a likable guy, and is back in office thanks mostly to folks like me.

Keep donating to her, I love to see you democrats wasting money on these two losers paying for them to stay at top spots like Bellagio Hotel Villa One Suite in Las Vegas.

With entry through a private secret tunnel the Bellagio Villa One is a two bedroom, $6,000 per night masterpiece. Staff pampers guests in a private dining room, private gym, and more.

The villas have 130 staff to help make the Bellagio's Villa One the top suite in the Travel Channel's roundup and the "most stylish suite" in Las Vegas.

Oh and the Clintons' tab for one evening came to $1,530 and included entrees of nine steaks, three chicken, three salmon and three Maine scallops, two lobster pappardelle, salads, sashimi, rock shrimp, and various side dishes.

The Clintons, spent a whole week in a Bellagio villa, and several times had big orders delivered from N9NE restaurant.

They really feel the pain and obviously exhibit such to the people in this country who are fighting every day to afford the massive increase being thrown at them by government every day.

Keep believing in those Clintons, and please keep sending your queen and king more of your income so they can live in such a grand sytle that they surely understand and feel the results of their over taxation of the middleclass people in this land.

Posted by: Lysander on April 3, 2008 04:40 PM
25. Of course you have all the facts and figures of who paid for that...how much the campaign (who has to report) covers and how much they (themselves) might have antied-up. They (Mrs Clinton) will indeed be taking a cut in pay when she becomes POTUS...she could very easily make a heck of a lot more money as a private citizen, but no she agrees to take a pay cut for the benefit of the public service that she feels passionate about. You can knock her all you want and dig up all kinds of stuff on her (what's new, folks have been doing it for quite a while now); fact is nothing really 'sticks' which tells me it's either totally untrue or distorted to meet the opposition's 'talking points'. Nice try...just try to show some respect for YOUR next POTUS. :)

26. To "Insufficiently Sensitive," regarding Post 4: You misread our editorial. We did not say it is "perfectly OK" for Democrats to talk protectionism in Ohio and "hit the mute button" on the West Coast. If we thought that, we wouldn't have written the editorial at all. We were chastising Obama for taking a position that is wrong and against the interests of people here. Regarding the Times and our "glorious Democratic candidates:" We endorse pols of both stripes. Our endorsements have included George W. Bush in 2000, Dino Rossi in 2004 and Mike McGavick in 2006.

27. Heh Duffman, can you tell me what democratic Super delegates have come out in the last month in favor of Hillary Clinton.

Looks like Gore got offered a big position with Obama, so you know where his money and power train super delegate vote will land.

Obama's Wife was campaigning with Kerry's wife, so you know where his super delagate vote will land.

Obama out raised Clinton 40 million to 20 million in the last month so you know who can buy more super delagates now.

Gotta disagree, Hillary is finished!

28. ...she could very easily make a heck of a lot more money as a private citizen, but no she agrees to take a pay cut for the benefit of the public service that she feels passionate about.

Ha ha ha ho ho ha ha..

The Clintons have made 50 MILLION DOLLARS since the peniz prez left office... and that doesn't even include "donations" to Clinton Memorial Cat and Porn History Library.

The question is, given their forbidden access tax returns, what are they hiding? Are they hiding the source, are they hiding their tax dodges or both.

Whorrabullary is power hungry.
She doesn't care about anyone but herself. And she sure as hell doesn't care about this country or YOU.

Too bad she's just about 3 weeks form being totally irrelvant. The icing on the cake is that she has totally destroyed the 'legacy" of the peni prez. Buh Bye...don't let the door knob hit either of you... on the way to obscurity.

Posted by: Ragnar Danneskjold on April 3, 2008 07:43 PM
29. I am not sure if He didn't destroy her chances but either way the two of them will take their places in the armpit of history, sucking off 5 to 6 simultaneous and separate government pensions for the rest of their lives will be their legacy.

The Federal Pension System should be brought back into perspective with the private Pension system. In other words done away with completely.

30. I heard a commentary the other day that predicted when she's out of this debacle of a campaign, and if she is opposed for her senate seat by a black candidate she will lose that seat as well. Those 2 power hungry manipulators are their own worst enemies.

Good.

Good riddance to sleazy trash.

She conspired to violate the Constitution, the Rules of the House, the rules of the committee, and the rules of confidentiality." She was one of only 3 persons he ever refused to give an employment reference to.

Clintons Report $109.2 Million in Income Over 7 Years

Her Senate Salary: $1,051,606
His Presidential Pension: $1,217,250
Her Book Income: $10,457,083
His Book Income: $29,580,525
His Speech Income: $51,855,599

36. And the Clintons and Gregoires want our taxes to go up...

I have now been deemed ruler of this great land and I do hereby edict this plan:

The Clintons in 7 years make 109.2 million and donate 10.2 million to charity, and pay 33 million in taxes, so they still have $66,000,000 left in that 7 years, or about $9 1/2 Million each year forever................SO

I hereby now edict as ruler and newly acting like a good democrap that I do now and forever declare and deem a 99% tax rate solely on the Clintons estate.

All Clinton Income will NOW be taxed at 99% and be allowed no more than 1 million retention to them as a couple every 7 years or $142,857 per year maximum including any Secret Service protection or monitoring at their Massive F'n Home in NY.

Signed by the now Leader of this US Nation, by which this nation was by the way founded, to get away from excessive and repressive taxation.

In adendumb! and especially as continually and most obviously shown the case back on the Pacific coast in the low life Liberal Western State, Washington State, I do hereby declare the following:

As of this day I do hereby place the new 99% tax specifically on all Liberals and especially on all Christine Gregoire's tax returns from this day forward.

All proceeds of these 99% taxes from the Clintons and the Liberals in Washington state will hereby be collected for my own personal use and enjoyment throughout my life.

This new taxation will begin today!

And will be enforcerd!

37. The funny thing is, GS, Bill Clinton "complains" that his taxes are too low. Fine, Bill, give it all to the U.S. Treasury, then! (I seriously doubt that he has)

Posted by: Michele on April 4, 2008 10:28 PM
38. If you want to see what they released, here's the link

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/feature/returns/

I.m sure they have been scrubbed up pretty good.

Her Real estate taxes alone for 2006 are $84,506, can you imagine the Carbon Footprint from that home?

I'm sure from what I am seeing they really

do (NOT) feel our taxation pain?

So I am still instituting a 99% tax rate on those two.

I'll be looking in the mail for the check, and we'll start the "Drinking Conservative" meetings every week paid for entirely by the Clintons!

Drink Up!
