Kudos To The Seattle Times

For publishing Captain Aaron Bert's blog, The Other War, describing his experiences in Afghanistan.  As I write, there are just two entries, but both are interesting.  In the first, he makes this surprising comment:

There is an abundance of fresh offerings and each meal offers plenty of American comfort food.  I would say there is almost too much choice, and considering how much food is laid out during each meal it is almost obscene in the amount one could gorge on.  The military wants soldiers to find comfort in food but do soldiers really need four different choices of fresh ice cream at lunch or dinner?  Or, six different types of meat at breakfast?  I don't know you don't have to eat it if you don't want to, but considering how many people are struggling mere feet from our defensive walls, it makes you wonder if all the effort and expense needed to transport so much food into each base is worth it.

I may be wrong, but I don't think American soldiers commonly complain about the food being too good.

And his second post ends with this:

. . . any chance I can to get away and be running a mission, I will surely take.

The Seattle Times is a little late in doing this, but better late than never.

I'm adding the blog to my blogroll, and plan to look at it regularly.  (I hope to add more good milblogs in the next few weeks, by the way.)

(There's some background on Captain Bert here and here.

Note to commenters:  I considered opening this post, but decided not to, because I don't think that all of you would be willing to stay on topic, which in this case is the Seattle Times' decision to publish a milblog.  Most of you would, but enough wouldn't so that I don't think comments would be worth the time it would take to police them.)
