McCain's Electability Problem

Be sure to read Eric's comprehensive Super Tuesday pre-cap below. His final point and link to Mark Levin on McCain's electability problem deserve an extra highlight.

McCain's most touted advantage is his purported bi-partisan appeal and electability. But I think that's grossly overstated. He's not so much of a centrist whose positions appeal to a broad spectrum. His platform is an idiosyncratic muddle of left and right. And he's no Ronald Reagan who can make complex arguments understandable and appealing to a broad audience. He won't be able to inspire the Republican base without emphasizing issues to which non-conservatives are indifferent or hostile, and he can't appeal to liberals without raising issues that alienate his potential campaign volunteers.

Those are tough hurdles to overcome against a united and energized opposition and, in Obama, a gifted (if vapid) orator.
