When a Republican candidate is the darling of the liberal media

As Eric noted, both Seattle papers have endorsed McCain. (As have the LA Times and New York Times).

McCain will undoubtedly tout these endorsements as indications of his "broad appeal", and therefore that he is the Republicans' best hope for victory in November. But no, they merely reflect the wishful thinking of various roomfuls of liberals. When the Seattle Times claims that McCain offers the "best opportunity for the country to have an informed, constructive presidential election", they really mean he would narrow the scope of the debate on issues like immigration and global warming, relabel liberal orthodoxy as "bi-partisan consensus", and marginalize mainstream conservative viewpoints.

We can also safely predict that if McCain wins the nomination these same newspapers will later urge the voters to reject him in favor of the Democrat. And McCain seems less equipped than Mitt Romney to rally the GOP base and articulate a winnable alternative against the Democrats.
