Hey Look, We're Gonna Go Broke!

To the surprise of few, recently provided long-term budget estimates confirm that low and behold, years of overspending in Olympia mean big deficits coming down the pike...even before the budgetary complications of a slowing economy.

How does a $2.5 billion gap by 2013 sound?

1. Between the D's in the state, and the R's in the federal government,My kids will have to pay 4 bucks for a gallon of gas, 10 bucks for a cornish game hen,Move into a Greg Smith high rise, have no initiative process, and pay a carbon tax.
What a future.

2. Of course Tim Eyman's initiatives that have slashed income sources couldn't have anything to do with that.

Nah.

Posted by: Daniel K on January 31, 2008 12:25 AM
3. Daniel K: correct, they have nothing significant to do with that.

Under Gregoire, the budget has increased by one-third, from $54 billion to $71 billion. In just four years. $17 billion increase in spending.

And you really want to blame EYMAN for this?! As I have said lately to many Democrats on this site: who do you think you're fooling?

4. There was a bonanza of extra money coming in from the past few years under the Gregoire watch. She had to believe the gravy train would keep on giving and giving.

The old-timers (R and yes, D) understood the cyclical nature of the State's economy with the ups and down of Weyerhauser and Boeing and then just Boeing. They never got over exuberant like today's legislator.

Makes you wish the cost and time committment to get elected to the legislature were small enough to attract better legislators, instead of the egomaniacs like the Oemigs and G. Simpsons.

I also get the OFM budget projections. King of interesting that many of the bills are being passed out of committee without the impacts being available.

The budget projections also show a tremendous increase in State government to regulate, regulate and regulate more and more.

5. Oh My, Oh My...whatever shall we do, it's almost like we lost it in a casino...Holy flatulance Robin - fear not, remember we have Dino! :)

6. s/be: flatulence...sorry (know there's a spelling god lurkingknow there's a spelling god lurking....) :)

7. Daniel K.

Our State has historically lived and died by the sales tax. When you ask for too much up front you pile too much overhead on goods and services. The price of goods and services go up,sales go down, and sales taxes go down with it. In effect the D's with their social programs, and union payouts, and the R's with their moral, and police state themes have helped kill the golden goose before it had a chance to lay the golden egg. What bothers me is that the R's stopped standing up for the golden goose.
Homeland security,Military spending, criminal justice overload are creations of the R's.
The sales taxes are key.If you can lower the prices, and get the poor people to spend along with the rich people sales taxes trickle into olympia(Tefalon).

9. It's called a recession.

The only difference between Rs and Ds in government is:

D's tax and spend
R's borrow and spend

The key part...is both spend.

10. Fantastic, more "Look! They do it too" arguments, excusing the state Democrats lack of fiscal responsibility.

The bottom line is that Dino Rossi wouldn't have increased the size of our state government by 33% in a few short years. Because he's not beholden to every Democrat special interest that the supermajority legislature is. The coming deficits in this state will be the responsibility, SOLELY, of Demcrats in the legislature and governor's mansion.

Posted by: Palouse on January 31, 2008 08:24 AM
11. Palouse,

Dino could not get elected if he was to commit to reducing criminal justice over funding.
Unfortunately that is the biggest cause of over spending that we can obviously afford to cut. Dino could not have changed the equasion without criminal justice cuts, and that was not going to fly for a Republican..Dino would have needed to have non violent criminals tow the cart instead of being on it, and that is not something that makes the R's go Ahhh.

Posted by: Publicbulldog on January 31, 2008 08:38 AM
12. Why again does Rossi have to make cuts when we are making comparisons resulting in a 33% increase in State government? I just don't get the math.

Posted by: swatter on January 31, 2008 08:42 AM
13. Publicbulldog - there's plenty of other areas that didn't need the extra billions that the Queen has allocated. Start with the state run healthcare plan that she expanded, teacher pay increases, DSHS, etc.

Posted by: Palouse on January 31, 2008 08:44 AM
14. Palouse,
You are correct. however to have avoided the recession I think we would have needed to commit to a sales tax friendly strategy.A strategy that neither party can adopt right now. Both parties kill the sales tax golden goose by over loading the cart.

Posted by: Publicbulldog on January 31, 2008 09:40 AM
15. Jim/Debt boy: you are, still, not very bright.

Posted by: pudge on January 31, 2008 09:41 AM
16. Bill Anderson: you are, once again, not fooling anyone. Like Jim/Debt boy, you pretend that the Republicans in Washington, DC represent the views on spending of the rest of us Republicans and conservatives down here at the grassroots.

If that were true, then Republicans would have turned out to vote in 2006. They did not BECAUSE they Republicans in DC are failing to act like Republicans.

You are caught in a silly logical fallacy: that just because those Republicans -- which most other Republicans have rejected -- act a certain way, that all Republicans do.

Posted by: pudge on January 31, 2008 09:43 AM
17. Bill Anderson,
I found nothing wrong with your statements,in fact I would refer the the R's as a spend and spend. As far as local republicans that stand up for the sales tax golden goose, most of them are gone.
If you can find me a true less government R (Toby Nixon)in Washington State that does not want to overload the criminal justice moral theme cart name them. The Washington State Republican tent is just not big enough.
Like I said neither party has the ability to adopt a policy that will revive the sales tax golden goose, and restore the glory years of a Washington State legislature staying late to spend sales taxes.

18. Sounds like it's time to raise "Fee's" like Romney does in his home state. That way Gregiore can say she didn't raise taxes while screwing the same people she would have been screwed if she did raise taxes.

19. Sorry about that, should read:

Sounds like it's time to raise "Fee's" like Romney does in his home state. That way Gregiore can say she didn't raise taxes while screwing us over anyway.

Posted by: Angry White Guy on January 31, 2008 10:43 AM
20. 18/19 - I'm perfectly fine with fees that directly pay for improvements or services. Toll away on 520.

14 - we aren't going to avoid the recession, so it was very poor planning and fiscal irresponsibility to be bloating the size of government like the Democrats did. Republicans at the time strongly warned against it, and it went unheeded. If they had just kept the size of government constant or with very modest increases, we would not be facing these deficits.

Posted by: Palouse on January 31, 2008 11:05 AM
21. As long as this state demands concesses on any improvement of infrastructure. That part of improving the Golden Goose will not happen. Movement of goods is critical to keep the taxes flowing into the coffers. Look at the cost to the area because I90 is closed. Estimated loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the economy for each hour that I90 is closed. It may seem small but it builds up as people do not get paid to deliver goods. Less money to spend. Infrastructure is as important as jobs. Because it will cause the number of jobs to increase as goods are able to move freely from one market to another. A plus to the economy.

Posted by: David Anfinrud on January 31, 2008 11:35 AM
22. 20,

Where The D's have it wrong isn't education it is education unions. The D's pay out for jobs we really don't need. When someone becomes serious about education the money for them isn't there.
The school districts are a perfect example, all 246 of them. Both parties put too much on the cart when it is their turn in power.Funny things happen to the R's,and D's when they get a hold of the majority locknar.

Posted by: Publicbulldog on January 31, 2008 11:43 AM
23. We all know what's next. The Dems will threaten to close parks, libraries and other things that really cost very little to scare the voters into accepting more tax hikes. None of the major things funded by the 1/3 increase in spending will be cut and we'll be just that much closer to economic free fall.

24. 23,
Man that is getting old.

Posted by: Publicbulldog on January 31, 2008 12:12 PM
25. Only $2.5 Billion? Why does anyone here see that as a problem?

You know the leftists infesting our state's government will just jack up taxes and fees to make up the difference.

Well, got to go. Got to drop off my $1800 odd dollar B&O tax check, forked over to a grateful government for no apparent, particular reason.

Posted by: Hinton on January 31, 2008 12:20 PM
26. @2, 3

Eyman's initiatives had nothing whatsoever to do with the problem.

He just put them in front of the citizens of this state, who then voted in favor of them.

27. 21,

The greenies think we can just twinkle our nose or click our heels and goods/services appear like majic. We have overloaded government roster spots, and neglected the transportation infrastructure in a major way. Some of these roads have not changed since my grandfather was alive driving the old Willis. Right now we are paying monitor watching flubber logic specialist to run a phoney computer program at ramp meters while they skirt two thirds of the traffic from the freeways so more freeways dont have to be built. What kind of cop out garbage is that.
The kind of cop out garbage that is brutal on godsand services and the collection of sales taxes. You are right David,Failing to trim uneeded government roster spots to build infrastructure is a favorite policy of the D's.They in fact managed not only to not build needed infrastructure they found a way to pay people to vuck it up so we stop using it so they dont have to build anymore.. It is a complete cop out.If I could gather all the truckers for one day and surround Tafalon(Olympia)I would, but most of the Independants are stuck with a truck payment running on a hamster wheel..or sitting still on it on I-90.

28. For those who don't understand Publicbulldog's coded language: when he talks about law enforcement, what he really means is drug enforcement.

You're welcome!

29. here are two primary causes of tax revenue surpluses: underestimation of revenue in budget, or excessive tax rates. Add to that the standard practice of budgeters to underestimate revenue during good economic times and to overestimate it during poorer times. This results in understating surpluses and magnifying deficits. Thus, Gregoire claims accolades for good governance due to high surpluses. When the economy is less robust, she can urge tax increases as the only way to balance the budget.

This is win, win, Democrat style.

30. @22: It's actually 295, now that Vader went kaput.

In terms of the WEA running education, that's a nice boogeyman to put out there, but the reality is that we're hearing "No!" an awful lot this session, and last session we lost gainsharing.

Posted by: Ryan on January 31, 2008 04:07 PM
31. @30,
Some of the 295 school districts need to be merged.I wish not to take anything away from the front lines,But between the silly state mandated dog and pony shows, and the bloated administration ranks there is plenty of room to cut.Having many friends in the teaching industry I know right where to go to shoot the mules in the head and push them over the side.

Posted by: Publicbulldog on January 31, 2008 05:22 PM
32. "It's the economy, stupid". There is a pending recession - maybe just maybe that will be enough to the knee-jerk thinkers who usually vote D to consider the alternative and vote R. The R's realize that those in the Puget Sound and Grays Harbor County are a tough sell and it will take strategic and smart campaigning to win a major race, starting with Governor.

I will go on record by saying that if the R's deliver in this election, the state will be better for it. If people do not get it, as the economic recession is setting in and taxes continue to rise without much to show for it in better services and infrastructure - that is just one more confirmation that we are living in the age of stupidity, with all due respect.
