Some Stories I Would Just As Soon Skip

Such as this one.

A member of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell's staff has been charged in federal court after a sting operation in which he allegedly solicited sex from what he thought was a 13-year-old boy.

James Michael McHaney, 28, was charged Saturday in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., with using a computer to arrange a sexual encounter with an informant posing as a boy, according to court records.

Cantwell fired him immediately, but has not said whether he was using an office computer.  The on-line conversation occurred during lunch hour, so it is likely that he was.

And I would have skipped this one if I hadn't seen how the Seattle PI treated it.  Their on-line story, which you can find here, is not the same as the story in the print edition.  The print edition story has just four paragraphs instead of the nine in the on-line version.  The PI hid the story, as best they could, at the bottom of page B2.  And they gave it this headline: "Cantwell aide fired, held on sex charge".  You'll notice that headline reverses the order of events.  But it puts Cantwell's reaction first, which must be what the headline writer intended.

Would the Seattle PI have treated this story the same way if McHaney worked for a Republican senator?  Almost certainly not.

Cross posted at Jim Miller on Politics.

(Those in other areas may be interested in this detail from the Seattle Times story: Before joining Cantwell's staff in 2006, McHaney worked on the John Kerry presidential campaign, and before that he worked for Congressman Richard Gephardt, the former House Minority Leader.

The print edition has an error, giving Ohio as Gephardt's home state.  Actually he represented a Missouri district in the St Louis area, for many years.  The on-line story has been corrected, stealthily, I suspect.)

1. Well you know what they say as far as the only difference in the dems vs reps in their procurement of sex is.....the age.

2. It certainly does sound like something you'd hear about an "R"

3. But in this case attempting to have sex with a child and it was a Democrat, Witz.
You know Cantwell's having a bad week when her aide makes Larry Craig look comparatively good (for not having been charged with attempted gay sex with a child).

4. Have to agree it is big news for a Dem to be in the block. It's no news at all for another Republican to be charged with a sex crime.

5. Unkl witz: yeah, what usually happens with Dem sex predators is they get a standing ovation in D.C. What's really funny in the coverage on this one is the press is, in almost every instance, referring to him as "ex-aide" or "former aide", in an attempt to make it appear that she fired him before any of this took place. Pitiful.

6. As the Arabs teach in the madrassas, Jews are pigs and monkeys.

As today's liberals believe, conservatives are pigs and monkeys.

The facts are that conservatives give far more to charity, that conservatives are far more mentally healthy, actually are interested in replacing themselves with children an believe in something beyond themselves, are interested in quality education, find rewarding excellence a good thing.

Piles of pathetic feelings and emotions unattached to reality facts and history, like posters of the ilk of uncl witz, are actually to be pitied, as their pure disgust with the ability of normal people to take care of themselves and obsessive need to control belies the tenets of real liberalism: tolerance, diversity, respect for others beliefs.

uncl witz, what a sad excuse for a human being you are.

Stuff it, pal.......

Pathetic. Maybe before you pass from this earth, you will get a clue......people actually have brains and can take care of themselves.

7. The form of the story is easily explained by basic newspaper practices. Headlines need to be easily understandable. "Cantwell aide fired, held on sex charge" is clearer -- dare I say more melodious? -- than "Cantwell aide held on sex charge, fired". And it's common for the online version of a story to be longer than the print version. The online version can be as long as the reporter wants, but the layout editor often needs to cut it to fit the available space. If the P-I wanted to suppress the longer story, why would they post in online in the first place?

8. You tell him, Hank!

Cantwell probably wanted to have a threesome with her aide and the kid, knowing what sick twisted pieces of garbage Democrats are... The LIBERAL media keeps throwing in "he was fired" and "former aide" trash. They would have shown no mercy to a Republican in a similar situation. Maria Cantwell is probably crying right now because an innocent child wasn't brutally raped by that queer. Liberals are a disease that need to be eradicated.

9. Followup to my previous comment: Do you really think the sequence of "fired" and "held on sex charge" is material? Do you think this is a plot by the P-I to persuade readers that Cantwell fired him first, and then he was charged and held? Of course he was charged and then they fired him -- immediately, it appears.

10. The PI headline doesn't bother me as much as some stories I saw earlier today that said, " A former Cantwell staffer arrested....."

He wasn't "former" at the time.......

Posted by: SouthernRoots on December 4, 2007 09:32 PM
11. Northwest Patriot shows what is wrong with many (but certainly not all) conservatives - so self-righteous, has to take a sad event and write slanderous drivel that Cantwell "wanted a 3-some..." with a "queer." What a repulsive post! You, sir, are no patriot.

Posted by: Up for Underdog on December 4, 2007 10:21 PM
12. Bruce: A true economic headline would have read: "Cantwell staffer arrested, fired". And the remainder of the story would have refrained from emphasizing "former staffer". Sorry, pal, your melody is a little off tune.

Posted by: katomar on December 4, 2007 11:38 PM
13. This so non news worthy and it will dissapate in a day. Who cares if the story or headlines mention "former", etc. He was a *scheduler* on her staff, he was not a confidant or a top aide.

I am sorry to say but this one is not going to have legs.

I also agree with #11. NW Patriot, maybe you should refer to your self as Stars-and-Bars.

14. As I mentioned yesterday over at Postman's blog, while I have no use at all for pedofiles (assuming that he is actually found guilty of something) I find it fascinating that Maria fired him immediately after the arrest - whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?

It is even more interesting in light of her support of certain Congressmen with blocks of cash in their freezer ...

Sounds as though her office is the Washington D.C. branch of Duke University.

15. Gee, Maria will now have to find another sodomite for her staff, but that shouldn't be too difficult in Seattle. Got to have that "diversity", ya know...

And Jay @ 14: The evidence (perhaps his work computer), probably "convicted" him on site. I'm all for due process, but from Cantwell's perspective, political expediency (former staffer, anyone?) probably outweighed due process in this case.

16. Obviously, Ms. Cantwell doesn't use the same standards to hire and fire that the Civil Service Commission demands for federal employees.

I wonder if the federal employee union will take this matter up and make sure this individual gets all the rights he should be entitled to for continued employment.

17. The bottom line is if he were an actual Democrat Senator from a Democrat Stronghold, he would be returned to office by Democrat voters. His downfall is that he wasn't high enough up on the Democrat totem pole. Can you say Gerry Studds?

In case you are not familiar: Studds' case meant molesting underage boys. In 1983, Studds acknowledged committing statutory rape against a 17-year-old page and making advances toward two others (although he refused to apologize).

Because he only committed rape and didn't do anything serious like send perverted text messages, but mainly because he is a Democrat, he was not immediately driven out of his party like Mark Foley, but was reelected repeatedly even after his admission. He didn't retire from Congress until 1997.

18. I hope our uncle weasel reads your comment, JDH.

Posted by: swatter on December 5, 2007 08:04 AM
19. JDH: You're absolutely right. That's who I was referring to when I referred to a standing ovation in D.C. Not only was he not driven out and even re-elected, he was given a standing ovation by Dems in Congress for being a "brave" gay.

Posted by: katomar on December 5, 2007 08:17 AM
20. I find it disheartening that conservatives walk away from this story, no matter how distasteful it may be. The reality is the MSM and the retards at Kos & HorseAss would be all over this story if he were a Republican or Conservative.

At some point we gotta fight fire with fire.

21. I'm not one to make predictions but will bet Larry Craig is sent out on his ear next election, if not prior.
William Jefferson, with his fridge-o-cash was re-elected, Studds, Kennedy, oh the list goes on.
Dems just don't want any accountability.

Posted by: PC on December 5, 2007 10:55 AM
22. Maybe next the Dems will say being a pedophile is
wholesome and natural like being gay. You watch.
I can't believe they don't support Sen Craig and
his gayness. I guess your a heathen if your gay
but not liberal.

26. NW Patriot is RIGHT.
And the survey he mentions is real. They spent four years surveying Democrats and republicans.
Republicans are helathier, mentally, whereas Democrats, Liberals, are MENTAL CASES.

PROOF @ Gallup:

four years.
