I'll Take Captain Obvious for $200, Alex

Today's Seattle Times breaks the stunning story that persons and organizations with issues before state government are donating to an incumbent Governor after spreading their money around when the seat was open four years ago. Campaign hands across the state are floored.

And if you're not catching the sarcasm, you should, because I'm laying it on pretty thick.

1. That just goes to show how business-owners look out for their bottom line. Business is not like a labor union that will blindly go with the Democrat...Businesses support those who support them.

2. In the end, both sides will raise outrageous amounts of cash, spend outrageous amounts on TV advertising, the state will still be divided, and one of the two of them will win. It sure would be nice to see the money go to some good, instead of being wasted on each candidate trying to raise the most negatives about the other. Am I skeptical? You bet. Nothing has changed the deep-rooted division created in 2004. What would change would be one of the candidates not going down the unlimited campaign spending route and instead state for every dollar given to their campaign to recommend the donor also give a dollar to the charity of their choosing. This would do a lot more good for the state than the unfortunate negative campaign battle that will ensue this coming year.

3. Huh? Both sides? Deep-rooted division from 2004? Wow.

Deano's cash is going to be well short this time. And part of this is that the Bush stench will infect a great many races down to precinct committeeman.

Posted by: WVH on November 25, 2007 11:19 AM
4. Bush's stench??? Well, I for one vote for my state's interest, not any flocking party. Therefor, my money and vote are Dino's to lose.

As far as the campaign article in today's paper, welllllllllllll, for you neophytes, she is the incumbant, she may win, she may not win, one has to hedge bets. And you have to admit, Christine is not bashfull about spending money. The stench is not Bush, it's the business as usual in politics. You scratch mine, I scratch yours. And no massage for the "people".

5. She has used her liberal courts to throw out the voters wishes on every tax cut they have voted on.

The Voters will decide the next governor in this state, not the donars that worry about getting kick backs.

The Voters get no Kick Backs, and they have long memories of promises made and Promises forgotten.

Posted by: GS on November 25, 2007 11:50 AM
6. The voters also know that the designation of Governor was not honestly earned by the person occupying the mansion.

When one obtains a position by unearned means, then all sorts of chicanery & magnanimous declarations will be used to maintain & soothe the injured parties.

A wise voter, whether it be in the business community or elsewhere, does well to remember the events of the election of 2004 & allow it's full effects to determine the donation destination.

Posted by: Susu on November 25, 2007 01:37 PM
7. GS, the real problem is that the voters DO get kickbacks. The system buys them off with bread and circuses, like subsidies to sports stadiums, and supporting enough popular special interests so that everyone thinks they are getting a good deal.

Well, what if that were the case? What if everyone got some kind of subsidy, such that it was fair? Well, then we would have all this government waste, and the economic distortion of taxation just so everyone got the same deal? Idiotic. No, the people are net losers in this game, and it is pitting each of us against each other in order to argue for our particular subsidies.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Your subsidy comes with strings; controls from the government. We are headed down Hayek's "Road to Serfdom."

F. Bastiat said that government is that great fiction whereby everyone seeks to live at the expense of everyone else.

Government must be limited, or it will expand so as to erode our rights to life, liberty and property. If the people no longer value liberty, they will lose it. If the people try to vote themselves the assets of others, they will find themselves worse off in the long run.

Power corrupts. The power to grant these special interest subsidies is the root of the corruption problem in DC and Olympia.

8. If the negative greeting given to the Governor after the Apple Cup is any indication - She is in a lot of trouble.

Attending Apple Cups for over 40 years, the only time I have heard more boos from Washingtonians is when the Oregon Ducks enter the field.

9. Rob, That's good news. (I doubt it will be mentioned in the local media.) I wonder of the Queen is still riding in a patrol car the 75 feet from the mansion to the governor's office? Doesn't she care about global warming?

10. Donors are going to be flocking to Dino, of this there's no doubt. It's nothing to worry about. Gregoire will have more money, but Dino will have plenty.

Posted by: pudge on November 25, 2007 05:07 PM
11. The worst point in that article is the one about the executive director of the Washington Asphalt Paving Association, who is a Gregoire convert.

If Christine Gregoire raised taxes on everyone in the state so she could give ME millions and millions of dollars, I'd donate money to her campaign too. :) But for the rest of us it's just kind of disgusting. Go Dino!

12. I really doubt she heard the will of the people in this state, although that was a great game!

She is deaf to the will of the people of this state. She has her Supreme Court willing to overthrough each and every one of our wishes.

She is attached only to the herds of Government hacks she hands out money to on a regular daily basis.

I am happy to see Rossi running again, because he will clean her clock!

She is a tax happy fee happy Government hack and is the only pork happy individual I have ever seen unelected into this position.

Bye Bye Gregoire! Hello Rossi!

13. Gregoire is finished. Since her "election" in 2004, the Huskies have lost the Apple Cup 3 out of four times. This should be the biggest failure recognized by KC and Seattle voters.

Prior to her "election", the UW had won six straight.

Time to bring in a new "coach". Go Dino.

14. A couple of weeks ago I was listening to the radio and heard some guy talk about Gov. Gregoire's PDC reports being odd. He was yapping about paving contractors and the Sierra Club.

So I went and looked.

ASPHALT PAVING ASSOCIATION PAC

is right there together with their members!

That must make all her 'progressive' supporters PROUD!

15. Dino has the election wrapped up. The state is in decline, the people are hollering fraud, and he's been an inspiring leader of the opposition since 2004.

And if you're not catching the sarcasm, you should, because I'm laying it on pretty thick.

Posted by: Bruce on November 25, 2007 09:08 PM
16. The good news is that Prop. 1 went down in flames. That showed the current political cabal sucks at governing, and that the voters aren't buying the ballot measure BS they used to.

Frankly, I don't give a damn if it is Dino or Chrissy for four more years. Neither will be able to do much, which means the downside for the families of this state is limited.

Oh, and Frank Chopp got his tail feathers clipped big time by the failure of Prop. 1. Good riddance.

17. Ralph Thomas and Justin Mayo are typical of the new Seattle Times "rocket science" reporters.

Bruce are you still smarting from being fired from the Sierra Club in 1997?

Posted by: KC Dems on November 26, 2007 07:18 AM
18. Funny how the Rs are getting themselves painted into the corner. First, they are the party of low taxes, but we have a problem that requires spending money.

Yet, we can't seem to spend the money because it means raising taxes.

Rs need to get it together.

I wonder if the paving institute is supporting Gregoire over the transit portion or the roads portion? I wonder if the paving institute will give a like amount of money to Rossi if he comes up with a program?

And this is just like what Stefan said- those supporting Prop 1 were more than likely the minions who would benefit by billions.

19. KC Dems writes: "Bruce are you still smarting from being fired from the Sierra Club in 1997?"

Are you confusing me with another Bruce? I've never had anything to do with the Sierra Club (though I'm generally a fan), much less been fired by them.

20. You know what would be neat? Every single
politician in this entire country got voted
out of office and start over. NEVER again
have to see any of their lying faces.
Also we should strip them of any benefit that
comes from the taxpayer for mismanaging our tax
dollars. The biggest problem in this country
is that there are no honest people left. You
can't believe anything you hear.

21. Mark @ 20 is absolutely right!
I say we impeach them all! Gregoire, Cheney, Bush... Throw the bums out! For every honest politician we lost, we would be rid of 100 dishonest ones.

Henry Kissinger said "Ninety percent of the politicians are giving the other ten percent a bad name." I think he was being generous.

KCDems @ 17:

Not me either. Which Bruce are you thinking of?

Posted by: Bruce Guthrie on November 26, 2007 01:33 PM
22. And I agree with #21. All of them OUT! Where the hell has Dino been for 3 years????????????? Pimping a ghost written book????? Hiding behind a foundation????? He will get his lunch handed to him even if Gregoire repeats her "non-campaign" of 2004. The Bushmeister has destroyed the Republican Party and it is time to start over. I worked for Barry Goldwater and the R Party used to stand for something!

Posted by: rocketdog on November 26, 2007 02:40 PM
23. I love people who criticize Dino for not doing anything the last four years - the same people who made sure he had nothing to do by stealing the election from him. I think the diversionary tactic is that if they can get us to talk about what Dino's been up to the last four years, we won't talk about ALL THE MANY MANY THINGS Chris has done. (Spending up 32%, Criminals set free, Hefty tax increases to transfer money to wealthy liberal pavement salesmen) :)
