Mitt meets Medina Update

Looks like Eric is taking point here so no need for SP to double up on the coverage. Git 'em E.E.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will be in town today. He is scheduled to highlight a private fundraiser in Medina tonight with donors forking over a $1,000 entrance fee and $2,300 to flash their pearly whites with the Massachusetts governor in a photograph.

It is unknown - by yours truly - what the rest of his itinerary is locally at the moment. According to his events calendar online he is scheduled to be at a breakfast in Idaho this morning and this is his last official campaign appearance before the Thanksgiving holiday.

There has been talk, I've been told, of some limited press availability. Hopefully I'll be able to get some Q&A time with Romney for the Sound Politics readers.

1. If you really want to know what Romney's schedule is today, Don, you will find the details on Postman's blog this morning.

Why does he have the facts, and you don't?

2. What?? YOu are actually going to physically go to the event? Don't you know that "professional" journalists sit and wait for an email and whine if they don't get one?

Posted by: pbj on November 19, 2007 09:38 AM
3. Fred, aka David Postman, you tricked me and got two hits on the two references to Romney's schedule.

I really, really think Don Ward is more plugged in.

There also seems to be a big deal about $1000 or more per plate dinner reported in the media lately. Or even Hollywood maximum donations.

$1000 is about 2-3 hours of an attorney's time. This stuff is chump change to the people giving money to trick you into voting for their person. After all, it will be the TV ads and unofficial MSM ads that will be selecting the president next year.

BTW, I only charge $5 for a photograph of the 'swatter', whose face is made for the blogosphere.

4. Could be your chance to meet the next Vice President of the United States.

5. Romney is a bigger flip-flopper, no way he can win. Shame, he's the only decent candidate the GOP has (unless you count Ron Paul).

Posted by: Cato on November 19, 2007 11:12 AM
6. Enlighten me, Cato, just what is it that is shared only between Mitt Romney and Ron Paul that makes them the only two decent candidates that the GOP has? Here's a go:

Of the well-known GOP candidates, which ones have the worst chance at beating Hillary Clinton? Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

7. Doug.
Your wasting your time with cato.

He knows it all. LOL

8. I personally don't think Ron Paul has a chance in hell. I think his views are very interesting and tend to attract the Libertarian wing of the party. I'll be sure to vote for him when I attend the GOP Caucus in Feb.

Mitt Romney is a great businessman...given the fact he's a member of a cult religion is not going to score him any points with the GOP base (even against Hillary). He's also a big flip-flopper on Gay Rights and Stem Cells (he's worse than Giuliani on that). Romney is an upstanding guy, with decent moral values....but he's the wrong religion (care to bring back Prohibition? Maybe he'll outlaw coffee.).

Face it, voters are flocking to Huckabee because he fits all the criteria for a successful GOP candidate. He's white, a successful governor from a red state, is a Christian (a preacher no less), and hit's all the right talking points to rally the Pat Buchanan / Pat Robertson / Ralph Reed types into his camp. May not be the Regan Revolution but at least you'd get a decent turnout.

9. Cato, you woke me up in a bed of contradictions. You say Romney is a big flip-flopper on some moral issues, but you say is an upstanding guy with decent morals. The two viewpoints seem to be at odds.

Before that you say he is a big flipflopper and then say he is the GOPs best candidate. Again, the viewpoints seem to be at odds.

I feel like the Aflac duck after talking to Yogi.

10. Cato,

Harry Reid is a Mormon (if I recall correctly), and the majority LEADER of one of the the LEGISLATIVE bodies where bills are made. I am still waiting for the prohibition legislation you are so worried about. You do know that Presidents don't actually legislate, right?

But then, you have a record of being a little loose on the facts here.

Bingo on Cato!

As I have said a few times.
Now he's talking like a REP/Libert. No-way he's a lib/dem.

12. You say Romney is a big flip-flopper on some moral issues, but you say is an upstanding guy with decent morals

He is a flip-flopper, just check YouTube. He is also an upstanding guy. The two can be mutually exclusive. I personally don't agree with his views on certain issues but he's certainly has better family values than a certain divorced cross-dressing mayor who's only qualification seems to be that he was a lame-duck mayor on 9/11.

Harry Reid is a Mormon (if I recall correctly), and the majority LEADER of one of the the LEGISLATIVE bodies where bills are made.

Wow Eyago, you're so smart, I've never heard that argument before. Guess what I didn't vote for Harry Reid. The people of Utah did. The Senate Dem's voted for him to be the Senate President. Senate President is not the same office PUSA (whom is elected by the entire nation). You know Presidents present bills and budgets, they also have the power to Veto bills they don't like which must be overridden by a 2/3 majority. The President can also issue Executive Orders and push bills to Congress without going through committee.

"Presidents don't actually legislate", what a crock.

13. Hehe, hey Army M/V, what do you contribute besides personal attacks?

BTW, I seem to recall you personally benefiting from a recent property tax increase.

the county a proposition authorizing a regular property tax levy for six consecutive years, with collection commencing in 2008, at a rate not to exceed $0.30 per one thousand dollars of assessed value.

Posted by: Cato on November 19, 2007 01:51 PM
14. I come after you Cato, as many others have seen when it comes to you.. FLIP-flop. You were blasting mormons just the other day.

Yeah Mr. Understanding you.

Typical lib...

No-one makes out in a tax increase. WE all get smacked by it. If you really knew how the gov worked, you would know how little of it makes it FD or other depts. Can you say SCHOOLS!

Posted by: Army Medic/Vet on November 19, 2007 01:59 PM
15. cato, you are kidding me, right?

Posted by: swatter on November 19, 2007 02:31 PM
16. You were blasting mormons just the other day.

I was? I recall joking about Islamo-Facisism but do not recall blasting Mormonism. If the GOP wants to pick the unelectable guy from the wrong religion, be my guest. Good luck on getting the Fundies and Christian Coalition types to turn out.

you would know how little of it makes it FD or other depts.

According to this chart, the median FF salary in Seattle is $67,388. Now let's look at a Seattle teachers salary, the median is $ 57,556.

Looks like a Fire Fighter who needs only a HS degree earns MORE than a teacher who needs to hold a Bachelors degree and be certified by the state just to qualify for a position. Now if your just talking EMT/Paramedics then you need a much higher level of education but you are still more likely to earn more money from OT and have a greater level of community respect than a teacher.

It seems Army M/V, you are a little loose on your facts.

Posted by: Cato on November 19, 2007 02:39 PM
17. The people of Utah did. The Senate Dem's voted for him to be the Senate President.

1. He's from Nevada.
2. He's the Majority Leader. Dick Cheney is the President of the Senate.

My point is, if you can't even get the basic facts correct, how or why are we supposed to accept the rest of your thoughts and opinions as valid?

Posted by: jimg on November 19, 2007 02:41 PM
18. but do not recall blasting Mormonism.

Good grief. Do you even know what you type?

No less in this thread:

a member of a cult religion
the wrong religion

And even in your 'rebuttal'
but do not recall blasting Mormonism. If the GOP wants to pick the unelectable guy from the wrong religion,

I have no vested interest in Romney or Mormonism, but you calling it a cult and the 'wrong' religion sure doesn't sound complimentary to me.

19. It seems Army M/V, you are a little loose on your facts.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Let's try this one more time for you CATO. The taxes they take in for FD's... pay, tools, engines is used up by big government... way before it gets to us.
Did I ever say I work in Seattle? Plus you need more than a HS to get you in. The phy test alone is a killer, not including the on going training. DON'T LOOK TO ME TO COMPLAIN ON WHAT I'M PAID.
Heck I think our union complains way to much on pay.
And yes you did make a remark about mormons just the other day and I jumped you on it.
Typical of libs like you. I can't say zip about gay's but man you can't wait to rip mormons.
Another think CATO, I'm not the only one who jumps you with your loose facts.
Sleep on that one bud!

20. you calling it a cult and the 'wrong' religion sure doesn't sound complimentary to me.

Maybe you should look at what Middle America and a lot of influential Christian pastors say about Mormonism.

Would Romney's religion even be an issue if he was Protestant, Baptist, or even Catholic? That to me signifies his religion is not the 'right' religion.

Hey, let's quote Mars Hill Church, a growing Christian mega-church in the Seattle area:

Is there a "nicer" or even a "nice" way to tell a mormon that what she/he believe is a lie and they are going to hell?

Posted by: Cato on November 19, 2007 03:30 PM
21. Plus you need more than a HS to get you in.

That's not what the application form for Seattle says. Just need to pass the physical, have a HS diploma, EMT certificate (all classes you need can be taken online, can't do that in teaching), and a valid drivers license. Don't need to be certified in teaching by an accredited four year college.

And yes you did make a remark about mormons just the other day and I jumped you on it.

I have no issues with Mormons, I'm just letting you know that Middle America is not going to jump on the Romney bandwagon because they consider him the wrong religion. Get a clue already, open your eyes next time instead of your mouth.

Typical of libs like you. I can't say zip about gay's but man you can't wait to rip mormons.

More typical of you, accusing me of some BS that's taken out of context. After doing that you attempt lump me into some Fox News inspired liberal stereotype and call me a name.

Another think CATO, I'm not the only one who jumps you with your loose facts.

True, it's all personal attacks and general ignorance when you post Army M/V. That's in addition to the usual off-topic comments and childish name calling that your posts tend to dwell on.

22. MITT ROMNEY, NO WAY IN H--L I WOULD VOTE FOR A MORMON AS THEY ARE "NOT CHRISTIANS" (MORMON BELIEFS
WERE TAKEN MOSTLY FROM "ISLAMIC" BELIEFS), AND THEY ONCE MURDERED "CHRISTIAN PIONEERS" HEADING WEST, WHO NEEDS THEM? THEY PUT ON A GOOD SHOW AS "FAMILY AND HAVING WORK ETHICS ETC ETC, UNDERNEATH IT ALL THEY ARE NOT MUCH BETTER THAN THEIR "BROTHER MUSLIMS"!

23. Cato at #16

You are comparing salaries of firefighters to teachers? Do the firefighters also have a 182-day contract as the teachers do or do the firefighters have a year-long contract? Is it possible that the firefighting contract is based on a 260-day year as opposed to a 182 day year? Do the teachers have an 8-hour day or are they only contracted to work 7.5 hours on those 182 days?

Let's not even get into supply and demand, but I really get nauseated at those trying to play down teacher's salaries when in reality they are getting over $50 per contracted hour in salary and benefits.

That's nothing, try installing power lines for City Light, an experienced lineman can easily pull upwards of $100k a year with OT.
