1. Ugh! Those turnovers will kill you every time. It was equally painful watching the Huskies on Saturday. Being a Seattle sports fan is not for the faint of heart.

Shortly after I watched the Hawks however, I listened to a live audio stream broadcast of the San Diego hydroplane race. Few pay attention to the hydros these days but the Oh Boy! Oberto! won the race. She also won in Seattle last month. The final heat was so close that I found myself shouting at the computer speakers. At least for me, it was a lovely finish after a frustrating weekend of football.

As it happens, Art Oberto turned 80 this August. He and his family have given selflessly to the sport for years, and have won rarely. Their boat is owned by the citizens of the small town of Madison, Indiana,(population, 12,000). She would not be able to afford to race were it not for Oberto's sponsorship. Their driver always takes time to talk to fans, especially little kids. These two unexpected wins could not have happened to nicer people. What a great birthday present for Art. Nice guys don't always finish last. Have some jerky, or pepperoni tomorrow!

2. After watching this weekend's sports offering, I am reminded of Col. Kurtz's famous line from Apocalypse Now

"The horror...the horror..."

3. Go Seahawks!

And take the Mariners and 'Sonics with you.

4. Thanks for the update on the hydros, Bill. I remember when they were the only big sport in town; then came the Sonics. That was cool.

The test of a true native is whether they rode their bicycle with a wooden hydroplane behind it as a kid...used to love the throaty rip of those piston-powered monsters around the lake...kinda miss that with the new turbo-shaft jet engines.

Too bad about the Hawks today. Years ago, I worked in a warehouse with some guys that had season tickets. They regularly wore brown bags over their heads at the games in the Kingdome. Nothing changes much, eh?

5. the pain. Hard to swallow after they had come back so nicely. Still, the Cardinal's defense gets their props.
It's just a little sad.

6. At least you didn't leave the bases load in the ninth, down by one, with Big Papi at the plate.

And I am mad at the Mariners for letting the Yankees take the top Wild Card spot. Go ... um, Tigers!

7. One thing that hasn't changed from last year is that Seattle still can't seem to put together two good halves of football. Nothing good can come from spotting one's opponent a 17-0 lead.

Oh well. Their next opponent just gave up 51 points to the Cleveland Browns of all teams. Hopefully this will be just what the doctor ordered.

8. Bill @ 1,

I remember watching the small, limited hydros race in Poulsbo as a kid in the early 60's. After completing a heat, the boats headed for various small piers and floats along the waterfront. My buddy and I were standing on a small pier when one of the boats approached, shut down and pulled alongside. To our surprise and glee, out jumped none other than Bill Muncey, king of Hydro Racing. He showed us around his boat and even let us sit in the cockpit. My, how sports have changed. Even as recently as the 60's, sports heros were approachable and genuinely pleased to spend a few minutes with a couple of 10 year old kids. We need more Bill Muncey's and fewer Barry Bond's in the sporting world.

9. With the Cougars winning this weekend, someone had to "coug-it" to appease the gods of football. The Seahawks stepped up to the plate and did a credible job of "couging-it."

10. The Hawks can pound sand. I can't root for a team that's gorging at the public trough. (Unfortunately, that's just about every team in major-league sports these days.)

How 'bout those Kingdome bonds?

11. Seahawks try hard but in the end they still suffer from the Seattle Suckage Factor which has happened to all male dominated sports teams in this area since 1979.

Maybe they need a new stadium to play better.

12. Uh Cato, I guess you forgot about a guy named Don James, who led the Dogs from Montlake to 6 Rose Bowl victories and a National Championship in '91.

13. I was at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma watching 360 Sprint Cars and Ford Focus Midgets on dirtt both Friday and Saturday. Two new track records set Saturday night and who can argue with $5.00 for two 12 oz bottles of beer.

14. Sorry, I assumed we were talking professional sports, not college level. Doesn't change the fact the Seahawks are just another lousy overpaid/overhyped pro-sports franchise who would drop out of Seattle in a second if they felt they could get a better deal somewhere else.

15. Bill,

Of course Cato forgot, he's an anti-male racist :)

Just kidding Cato...however you did have a point until you threw in the "male-dominated" crap. Remove garbage like that.

I remember early in life I was talking to my boss about a customer once and I said "Yea, I have this Asian lady on the phone and..." He cut me off an asked if it mattered whether or not the customer was Asian or female. Of course it didn't...lesson learned.

As for the topic at hand...I think the Seahawks would make a killing if they released a CD compilation of Holmgren's halftime and postgame team pep talks. Bet those are hilarious...

16. I had to throw in "male-dominated" because the Storm won the national WNBA championships in 2004. They are the exception to the broader all Seattle Pro-Sports teams suck rule.

Posted by: Cato on September 17, 2007 12:30 PM
17. Cato,
Don't forget the Sonics World Championship back in the, uh, 1970's...

Posted by: David on September 17, 2007 03:40 PM
18. There's a team called the "Storm" in Seattle? Who knew? I had no idea the WNBA was still in existence, or that anyone cared.

As for the Seahawks/Mariners, any bandwagoner can root for a team like the Yankees who have won 26 World Series titles. Rooting for teams who have never won a title takes character.

19. And don't forget that the Seahawks made it to the Superbowl a couple years back.

Posted by: Bill Cruchon on September 17, 2007 04:04 PM
20. Just remember, the Seahawks lost their first game in 2005...then made it to the Superbowl! Sunday's loss is disappointing but it's still early in the season.

21. don't forget that the Seahawks made it to the Superbowl a couple years back.

I think that should read...don't forget that the Seahawks got their ass handed to them in Superbowl a couple years back.

Pro-Sports teams are a ripoff, I'd choose a Rollergirls bout over a pro-sports team match any day of the week.

22. "I'd choose a Rollergirls bout over a pro-sports team match any day of the week."

Why am I not surprised?
