Re: The P-I Has Jumped the Shark

To illustrate the point about how far out there the P-I is getting with its position on dealing with Iran, behold this editorial in the Washington Post, no lion of neo-conservatism.

The Post says "the Revolutionary Guard, a radical state within Iran's Islamic state, is waging war against the United States and trying to kill as many American soldiers as possible." Regarding the possible listing of the Guards as a terrorist organization, they add "this seems to be the least the United States should be doing."

They further note,

so far, the diplomacy and sanctions haven't been working: Iran has been unresponsive to extensive European deal-making efforts and hasn't taken up a year-old U.S. offer of across-the-board negotiations in exchange for stopping its uranium enrichment. The sanctions have been too weak to cause the regime serious discomfort, and tougher measures are being blocked in the U.N. Security Council by China and Russia.

In summation, they conclude:

some European diplomats [and the P-I!] say they fear that an escalating confrontation between the United States and Iran will end in war. But sanctions are the alternative to war -- Iran already rejected initiatives aimed at ending its nuclear program by offering economic concessions and other carrots.

I know, I know. If we just explained to the nice mullahs how much we like and respect them this wouldn't be happening. In fact they'd probably apologize for their last 28 years of anti-American activity around the globe - especially that whole storming our embassy bit - if we smiled really nicely across the mahogany table when our diplomats go to Tehran to sing Kumbaya.

Or maybe not.

In other news, I now institute a personal ban on the use of any variations of the phrase "jumping the shark." It just seems like the right thing to do.

1. Iran v. the world is the biggest war no one has heard of. I recall several months ago listening to a talk show host interview a very articulate, smart Iranian who went 'home' to help overthrow the government and start a business.

Nothing new so far and the script followed what the talk show host and I were expecting. Then the bombshell. The guy admitted there was a war between the US and Iran, and while he supported US efforts to overthrow the mullahs and its efforts in Iraq, he was quite nationalistic in how he was an Iranian and would support the mullahs if the US and Iran got into more formal battle gear.

Folks, there is a war going on and the sooner we address it, the fewer people will be killed.

2. Iran is guilty of many things. Thousands of innocent people killed every month. I have a hard time figuring out who is the real cause for the increas in over 1000 to 1500 deaths every month in IRAQ over the past year. IS it Democrats opening their mouth and saying we are losing or is it IRAN that is using the war in IRAQ to prevent focus on thier Nuclear Power Program. Iran is responsible for billions of dollars of military equipement being provided to many Middle Eastern Terrorist groups and Anti-American Countries.
The US can win against IRAN without firing a shot. Start drilling for oil in the US. FInd large reserves of Oil and cause the price of Oil to drop to under 40 a barrel. But the Liberals will not allow any oil drilling in the US. Instead they want us to kill innocent Iranians in thier streets. IF the price of oil can be maintained under $40 a barrel. Guess what liberals. Iranian government can not buy all the weapons that they are supplying to other countries. Their economy would not support it. IF they tried to do it the People in IRAN would revolt. They are very close to it now because of the actions of the government and the Revolutionary Guard.
A simple solution yet one that is unacceptable to most liberals in the US. Instead our military will have to pay a price every day as those weapons are being used against them. So in a sense. Liberals with the idea of preventing any oil drilling are causing thousands of people to die every month. Because they are supporting terrorism in IRAQ via thier actions.

4. Like a 5 thousand pound gorilla in your bathroom, its the war that hides in plain sight.
America's war with Iran has been openly raging on for years, it is currently being fought in Iraq and the left calls it an Iraqi civil war.
Its like calling 911 a civil war.
On the other hand, with democrats on "our side" maybe the euphemism is apt.

5. Speaking of Iraq, did anyone catch the President's speech to the Veteran's of Foreign Wars covention this morning? I thought it was one of his best. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/08/20070822-3.html

I can't believe you wrote that, Eric. The Washington Post editorial board has always been extremely friendly to neocon views.

Thanks for asking.

9. The people in Puget Sound have nothing to worry about when it comes to terrorist attacks.

After all, why would Al Qaeda target an area of the US which largely supports them and opposes American interests virtually everywhere in the world? Why, it would be like a Vietcong attack on Berkeley.

10. Lets see North Korean Nuclear missle Can hit Seattle.
Less security precautions. Preventing Police from questioning people that look suspicious. Easy access to many different target types. IE Football and Baseball stadiums. Large crowds in many venues. Large Gay community. Moslems normally stone or kill Gays. Rush hour traffic on floating bridges. Large buildings easy targets that could cause problems in the middle of the day. Ferries that just may or may not have great security due to the fact that lots of limitations on who can be considered questionable. No profiling allowed. So attention to groups known to kill people get equal attention, as say a Grandmother with a Grandchild. Otherwise racial profiling again. Large Trucks of material shipped from the Shipyard. Easy to blend in.
You are right Rey we are not a target. Seattle does nothing to offend terrorists nor does it have any easy targets that can kill or hurt large quanity of people.
