King County Elections spokeswoman Bobbie Egan e-mailed:
Elections staff completed signature verification on I-24 late Monday, Aug. 13. Regarding duplicate signatures, King County procedures are to count the first verified voter's signature and not a second or multiple signatures. These procedures have been reviewed and approved by our legal council and will be the same procedures used for I-25.Interim reports showed 77% validity, but this report indicates 67% validity. I've requested clarification. Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at August 16, 2007 04:26 PM | Email ThisKing County Elections evaluated 78,290 signatures and stopped when the total number of valid signatures identified reached the sufficiency requirement of 52, 817 and staff had validated an additional small percentage. The additional number of signatures beyond the sufficiency requirement is meant to provide a buffer should anyone seek to challenge any individual signatures we have accepted as valid.
Elections staff is on schedule and expects to complete I-25 by the end of August if not sooner. We are making good progress and have been working overtime to ensure we meet our deadlines.
What is the recourse for contesting the signature invalidation process? Will they be releasing the names of those they believe are invalid?
