Aspiring To Be A National Nuisance

Almost all politicians have ambitions, from passing a measure they believe will help the public to winning a higher office.   Some of their ambitions are honorable, and most of them are at least understandable.   So, why I am I stuck with a congressman, Jay Inslee, whose ambition is to move from being a local nuisance to being a national nuisance?

Rep. Jay Inslee will introduce a resolution today directing the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should be impeached.

Five co-sponsors have joined Inslee, D-Bainbridge Island, in backing the resolution.

At issue, said Inslee, is whether Gonzales lied to Congress in testimony about secret government wiretapping and about the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, including John McKay, the former federal prosecutor in Seattle.

Those interested in the facts of the case may want to read this Washington Post column by leftist Ruth Marcus.

I find myself in an unaccustomed and unexpected position: defending Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Gonzales fans, if there are Gonzales fans left, except for the only fan who counts: Don't take any comfort from my assessment.

In his Senate testimony last week, Gonzales once again dissembled and misled.  He was too clever by seven-eighths.  He employed his signature brand of inartful dodging -- linguistic evasion, poorly executed.  The brutalizing he received from senators of both parties was abundantly deserved.

But I don't think he actually lied about his March 2004 hospital encounter with then-Attorney General John Ashcroft.  I certainly don't think he could be charged with -- much less convicted of -- perjury.

And don't miss what Marcus says about the motives of those attacking Gonzalez:

Consequently, the calls by some Democrats for a special prosecutor to consider whether Gonzales committed perjury have more than a hint of maneuvering for political advantage.  What else is to be gained by engaging in endless Clintonian debates about what the meaning of "program" is?

That's you she's talking about, Congressman Inslee.

As a leftist, Marcus does not go as far as she should in her argument.  We are engaged in a war with terrorists, a war in which intelligence is crucial.  Those facts are indisputable.  But most Democrats and most "mainstream" journalists act as if their main enemy is the Bush administration and do all they can to disrupt our intelligence operations — if that will hurt Bush.   Congressman Inslee's proposal to start an investigation of Gonzalez may not be the most irresponsible thing these leftist allies have done (that dishonor probably goes to the New York Times for some of its leaks), but it is one of the most irresponsible.

If Inslee succeeds, we will be, in effect, without an Attorney General for the next eighteen months.  And, since so many of the threats come from within, the Attorney General is a key figure in the war on terror.  But that doesn't matter to Congressman Inslee, a local nuisance aspiring to be a national nuisance.  And, as far as I can tell, a local nuisance completely indifferent to the effects of his actions on our national security.

Cross posted at Jim Miller on Politics.

(Incidentally, I learned from the article that Inslee had been a (part time?) prosecutor early in his career.  Given his weak relationship with the facts, I think an investigation into his actions as a prosecutor is warranted.  A man who will believe, for example, Joseph Wilson, IV, will believe anyone and may well have been a Nifong in that part of his political career.

Since Inslee is interested investigations, let me suggest that he might want to begin with Congressman Conyers.  If, that is, Inslee is interested in crimes, rather than "maneuvering for political advantage".)

1. When he COULD be doing something about the AMT, which is hurting thousands of american families that it was never meant to touch, he does....this.
Complete. Waste. of. Time.

Inslee, Why don't you stop the govt. from needlessly financially hurting your constituents instead of wasting time on this sandbox tomfoolery?

2. I put some of the blame on the Administration for not standing up to this in the first place.

The White House response should have been, "The President can fire Prosecutors at his pleasure. End of Discussion." Then been completely non-responsive to congress, say only the matter is closed. But the White house and to maintain the "new tone."

3. Let's face it. Bush is a nice guy. It absolutely astounds me that the left doesn't think much of Bush. He gave the leftists trillions of dollars for failed programs as a 'compassionate conservative' but they don't appreciate the charity.

This will be one of the most talked about aspects of the Bush administration over history.

4. Jay,

If you are looking for soemthing productive and positive to do with the extra time you have on your hands, how about some GI Bill enhancements for our men and women in uniform? You have been all but invisible on that front!

5. Why do folks want to impeach Gonzo about the US Attorney thing, and they want to impeach Bush about Iraq, but no one wants to impeach either one for refusing to secure our borders? That would be a real reason.

6. Jay Inslee is an a$$hole anyway.

7. Finally Michelle, I in part agree with you on something. The AMT is truly odious and needs to go away. Although, I don't remember the GOP chomping at the bit to get rid of it either. They had four uncontested years to do so.

8. I have a good friend who is a far left Democrat. For years, he has been urging Democrats to basically forget ethics and just trash the Republicans as much as they can, because "that's what they did to Clinton."

It's pretty obvious that's what's fueling this. There's no serious evidence of "wrongdoing" by Gonzales. You can think he is bad at his job and that he should be removed for just sucking, but not for any actual crimes, any real "wrongdoing." Well, you can think it, but there's no evidence of it. :-)

9. I wish Bush would become more of a Reagan...especially when RR fired the air traffic controllers. He essentially said to his critics, "You don't like it, Well, tough jelly beans...just get over it". I really miss that man!!

10. JCM is on target. The WH lost control of the message 3 years ago... and did nothing to take control of this issue.

Now, both the President and the AG are dangling in the wind getting nailed like so many piniatas while we stand by and do nothing.

Unfortunately, their incompetence ordained this result.

11. In Bush's Amerika, a lying Attorney General does seem pretty trivial. Get a grip, and enjoy the ride, Jay.

12. Inslee is my congressman. I've always considered him a semi-ass but never the complete ass that McDermott is and now he has crossed over. The burbs don't do complete asses. They leave that to Seattle. He is now on my list and I will make an effort to defeat the Kos Kid in the next election.
His district has never been safe for either party so he doesn't have the benefit of going screwball left and it's odd that he doesn't know it.

13. CandrewB, the republicans SHOULD have fixed the amt. I am glad that they cut taxes in general, but they missed boat on AMT.

I ask you, what are the odds your democrats will actually fix the AMT? (Yah, none. they really don't cut anybody's taxes ).

14. I feel/take some responsibility for Gonzo, probably more than many posting here; I voted for his boss on two times and I could never understand why Bush couldn't just simply do the one thing that might show him to be more than a sychophant for the Mexican government; but ever since the amnesty debate when the "voice of Ronald Reagan" Peggy Noonan described in the attached URL the article: Too Late in the opinion Journal, and described the supporters of the president as feeling what it is to be a "battered wife" the White House basicaly has given any supporter of his the middle finger and said, "Go eF yourselves" ; and do not bother us/me with your impression of me as a conservative when I'm really a connecticut Yankee, and a patrician Elitist; afterall look at my pedigree and genetic factors all the way to my grandfather, father, my mother's heritage; let's face it, they packgaged me this way to "sell" me to the bible belt and conervatives because Karl Rove knew that is what would definitely be bought sfter Clinton made such a hash out of screwing evrything in sight; Let's face it, anyone who was going to vote Republican voted for Dick Cheney not me...(said Karl Rove and George Bush).....let's pray that the next president gets it right for the American people; because we took this administration to get it right for corporations; i'm not certain if we didn't go just too far in that direction. http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/?id=110010148

15. Last time I heard Inslee on KIRO, he was calling from a Bainbridge Island school where he was "teaching children about clean water."

16. Gonzales fired a bunch of lolly-gaggers who were dragging their heels.

He probably increased efficiency by a factor of 10.

Can Jay Inslee and Russ "Saucer Boy" Feingold say the same??

17. Let Jay go for it... maybe it will keep the lame congress lame and less likely to screw up Americans with ridiculous, onerous and outrageous taxes.

Hells bell I hope the investigation takes years... keep the kiddies busy.

18. Over here on the dry side of the state, we summarily "fired" Inslee. His replacement Doc Hastings is a much brighter representative.

19. Re #12 "His district has never been safe for either party so he doesn't have the benefit of going screwball left and it's odd that he doesn't know it":

Sorry, Thatcher, I think I have to disagree with you on this one. Inslee's from Braindamage Island, and this rock's bumper crop of gray-ponytailed looney leftists is probably sufficient to put him over the top in every election until he decides to retire. They worship the ground he walks on precisely because he IS screwball left.

20. Red, Inslee really put one over on y'all in order to get elected, methinks.

21. Good luck JAY. He's knows this will go no-where.
He's only trying to look good to the Dem's.

22. Team D sees an opportunity to score points on Team R - the people be damned ! Inslee is borderline progressive and out to score points for team D so they will have a leg up in the next election. Meanwhile Team R is trying to score points on Team D in the internal battle to force us out of Iraq.

Gonzalez is mediocre at best, but is certainly less corrupt and incompetent than Janet Reno. Impeachment of him may be over the top, but a vote of no confidence should really occur in American politics, so the politicians have less to hide behind and would be forced to serve us more. Why the Repubs did not try and impeach her is beyond me. Team D plays below the belt, down and dirty and would like to take no prisoners, while Team R tries to play fair, but can be just as dirty if they set their minds to it and has become more aggressive in spurts over the last few years. National politics continues to go the way of the limbo stick - how low can you go ?

23. Unfortunately I live on a border street on the eastside that divides the congressional districts. Dave Reichert is on the south side of the street with Jay "Numbn_ts" Inslee being on the north side. I sent him an e-mail conveying that it would be more productive to put his efforts into border security and veteran affairs, than playing the role of a "Pelosi Puppet" and wasting our resources going after the AG. He'll more than likely send me a canned response regarding his successful efforts to "Save The Whales" in Lake Washington. As I said, I'm temporarily stuck with "Numbn_ts" Inslee. Hopefully he'll go away after the next election.

24. John, why would he go away? I haven't heard of a single person considering challenging him. Have insider information?
