A big step towards accountable leadership at King County Elections

The petitions with 74,000+ signatures that the I-25 campaign turned in this morning.

And over at Washblog today, Zappini describes another instance of failed management at King County Elections and why I-25 is needed.

4. Congrats! My name is in there somewhere!

BUT, I'd be hard pressed to think of an initiative WE THE PEOPLE passed lately that has not been overturned and/or ignored by the Queen, King Ron and their loyalists.

5. I will bet that there will be far more urgency in KC to identify bad signatures on this initiative than there was in the 04 election!

Congrats to all who helped make the goal.

Nice to see the icons that your Cargo Cult worships.

7. King County Records Elections And Licensing Services Division staff was today directed to review signature verification guidelines for initiatives.

This is in no way connected to KCREALS receipt of Initiative 25 petitions. KCREALS management and staff are strictly neutral on Initiative 25.

KCREALS management is using this opportunity to evaluate staff performance. KCREALS managers have been instructed to give considerable weight to staff performance during this process during forthcoming performance reviews.

The percentage of signatures verified by each staffer will be tracked and reviewed by managers, and the results reported to the Executive.

"The public deserves a vigorous examinination of Initiatives that impact every aspect of their lives," said Sherril Huff, director designee of the Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division. "By combining this vigorous examinination with KCREALS's proven process management expertise, KCREALS can assure the citizens of King County that we will deliver a result in keeping with our tradition of excellence."

8. It's perplexing that, while many good-government advocates are calling for the Seattle school board to be appointed by the mayor rather than elected -- to promote greater accountability -- you are so excited about converting the elections office from a professional one to a political one. Even if I-25 wins, maybe the result will be better, maybe not; I strongly doubt it will affect the outcome of any election. It's odd that this is so important to you in light of all the more important issues to fight for. Then again, it's also a harmless place for wingnuts to spend their spare cash. Give generously to I-25!

9. Tradition, that second paragraph was good for a huge guffaw!!

Bruce, even you have to admit the existing setup reeks to high heaven of favoritism.

Typically, what happens is a staff person runs for the spot and rarely are these positions political. But, you would have thunk the existing system was pretty harmless, too.

10. If King County Elections is what you'd call a "professional" office I'd hate to see what an unprofessional one looks like.

11. Vexorg, If you want to see an example of an unprofessional office, just observe Queen Christine! (When, oh when will she ever go green and start walking the 75 yards to work?)

16. Kudos for the signatory victory.
The picture of the victory (see original post) is outstanding. Who took the pic and what camera did you use?

19. Thanks for

1- Pulling this together
2- Creating and maintaining a public forum where little people can make a big difference.
