Environmental lawyer Keith Scully has filed as a Democrat candidate for County Prosecutor.
I perused Scully's campaign website. His top 3 issues:
Death PenaltyHe wants to expand the purview of the criminal justice system:
Diversity
Labor
As we get serious about protecting Puget Sound and stopping global warming, a focused enforcement unit will be essential. Keith would create a unit dedicated to environmental enforcementThis would be interesting. Throw the Seattle City Council in jail for violating the Growth Management Act? Arrest grandma for failing to sort her trash? Prosecute the sun for overheating the solar system?
One wonders whether Scully might be a foil to make Bob Ferguson look reasonable.
But this gives me hope:
Keith understands the fraud division, and would expand its role to include all fraud crimes.I'll believe it when he has Dean Logan extradited from California. Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at June 06, 2007 11:28 PM | Email This
Maybe Rick White could take a few pointers from Ferguson on how to get one's law license re-activated in order to seek high-profile public legal offiuces?

Posted by: eric on June 7, 2007 02:23 PM(And let's be clear: In a D primary, which is where Scully starts, his "issues" page is simply addressing D constituency questions.)
If having a D by one's name is a scarlet letter, then why even bother having this conversation? If, on the other hand, you want to talk about the candidates, talk about *real* ones--not cardboard caricatures. "Arrest grandma [what, no capitalization for Granny?] for sorting the trash?" Puh-leese.
Real environmental crimes cost the county (state and feds) millions--or even billions--in cleanup. That money comes from--wait for it--tax dollars. The crimes perpetrated by, yes, criminals, plain and simple. If you're soft on those laws, well, you're soft on crime. All Scully is calling for is being more aggressive in prosecuting those laws, and as the Rs like to say, enforcement is the key to prevention.
Hey, if you don't like the environmental laws, change the legislative bodies in our state, but don't undercut the prosecutor's office.
(Oh, and for the record, it's "Democratic candidate," not "Democrat candidate." Don't embarrass yourself; you know what that's about, and it's just bad grammar to boot.)
