If only for the two page spread on what our Marines are doing in Iraq. The article ends with this story:
Got a tough but heartwarming story and a picture of a medical Chief, John Gebhardt in Iraq
This little child's entire family was executed by insurgents. . . . it was their intention to execute her also as evidenced by a shot to her head, but they failed to kill her.
She was cared for by John's hospital unit and began healing, but the psychological and physical pain had led to increasing crying and moaning. Little could be done to bring her comfort until the nurses noticed that she always settled down when John held her. It may have been the smell, the sense of safety or any number of other factors. For whatever reason the nurses said John is the only one she seems to calm down with, so John has spent the last four nights holding her while they sleep in that chair.
The child's recuperation is coming along nicely.
We can only hope that she recovers entirely — and that we and the Iraqis bring those who tried to kill her to justice.
As I said in this post, it is not hard to understand the basic issue in Iraq: Our terrorist enemies want to kill Iraqi civilians — and we want to protect those civilians, including that little girl in the arms of John Gebhardt.
(The June issue is not available on line, but will be eventually. As they warn you at the site, the issues load slowly, even for those with broadband connections.)
Posted by Jim Miller at June 03, 2007 04:00 PM | Email ThisMy guess is you'd have to increase it at least an order of magnitude (or 2)...
Posted by: John Bailo on June 4, 2007 11:15 AMBut Miller and the newspaper both got the serviceman's affiliation wrong.. look close you will see he is with The USAF
God bless him regardless!
Read the letter to the editor in the June issue and every issue, they are guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.
Posted by: Linda Falle on June 4, 2007 03:09 PMOf course a lot of soldiers will say that too. I guess "leftys" and soldiers are one in the same sometimes.
Girls being shot at by thugs is pretty damn sickening regardless, but honestly, why is it somehow better because it was our side being the hero this time, rather than our side lining up the family and doing the executing? That never happens though, all fabrication of the damn lieberals you hear about on Fox.
All sides in this dumb ass war are wrong, including ours. Quit cherry picking half the fact and stick to all the fact: we invaded a foreign country on faked evidence, now we're stuck in a dumb civil war we don't even understand much less care about, and you want to play army man hero go right ahead, but you're dragging America down with you .
