Mayor Nickels' son indicted

"Nickels' son indicted with dozens in scheme to cheat casinos"

Jacob Dyson Nickels, the son of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, has been indicted as part of an investigation into a multi-state casino-cheating ring that allegedly stole millions of dollars by bribing casino employees to falsely shuffle decks.

3. I wonder if he "confessed" so they could actually start the investigation.

4. Does he count votes?

5. Finally. Someone related to government is getting money out of the casinos.

Step 2 - how to get the money into the general fund so it can be handed out to the needy.

On the other hand, maybe they just bypassed the middleman....

6. Musta learned the old "fast-shuffle" from watching his dad screw taxpayers

7. WOW....He cheated the Indians.
Now that ain't very politically correct, is it?

8. Well, I don't think we have to worry about there being a Son of Nickels in office now.

9. He's a little pig, his father's a big pig. The whole family needs to go down. Cheating the Indians? I though "only Republicans" did that. I wouldn't be surprised if Big Greg was in on the scam, too.

10. I don't care for the Mayor, his politics and manner in which he runs Seattle, but have to wonder, how many of those that are insensitive to someone loosing his father then finding out their son was arrested would like to have their personal matters on the wire 24/7/365.
Not impressed, you need a higher caliber of responses during this time.

11. tg,

Would that be like the high caliber responses to Jerry Falwell's death? Or the high caliber responses to the idea that a suicide bomber missed Dick Cheney? Or the high claber responses to Ronald Reagan's death?

I thought the standard was already set. I guess I'm just confused.

12. TG

When u run for public office, you are considered fresh meat...... Look at GWB, he can't take a poop without the liberals pointing out it doesn't float.....

13. I object to the media making a big deal out of the Bush twins active party life, out of Dick Chenney's daughter's sexual orientation and her new son.

I also object to the Seattle Times getting into the mayor's face on this.

While I understand that people love a great "Greek Tragedy" and that it needs to involve a prominent person and his family, I think that outside of just reporting the news, folks should let it pass.

The politics of personal destruction needs to get cooled down.

14. Yeah, I agree, Bob. How do we convince Jacob to stop detroying himself?

15. tg, do you mean higher caliber like W getting a ticket for no seat belt?
It could go on and on but KOMO 4 made it an item of note so don't go blaming Stefan for hyping this one.

16. I agree, Bob. How do we convince Jacob to stop destroying himself?

17. tg--
Do you believe some of Nickels efforts haven't hurt citizens at vulnerable times??
How many people with businesses downtown would be hurt or destroyed by Nickel's lame-ass Tunnel idea???
I understand what you are saying tg. Losing a father & finding out your son is a crook who probably stole huge money from impoverished Indians is quite a jolt. But do you really think coming on to SP and trying to shame folks into feeling sorry for a guy who has caused others plenty of misery is a fruitful use of your energy??

Posted by: Mr. Cynical on May 24, 2007 06:22 PM
18. Like Father Like Son, Son just never learned you had to be in a public office to steal legally from all!

Posted by: GS on May 24, 2007 06:24 PM
19. TG, if Nickels can't stand the crap, he never should have crawled into the catbox.

20. I never knew the natives that owned casinos were "impovershed"

I should be so impovershed as to get to own a monopoly casino.

Not downplaying Lil Nickels' crimes here, just pointing out that there's a reason they went after Indian Gaming, and it wasnt because of their poverty.

Posted by: DaveD on May 24, 2007 07:04 PM
21. I believe that Nickels the younger was an employee of the Nooksack Tribal Casino (as a pit boss) and is accused of facilitating the relationship between the cheating gamblers and the dealers. Developers/Government or Cheaters/Dealers it's "All in the Family" so to speak.

Posted by: Smokie on May 24, 2007 09:02 PM
22. It runs in the family. Apparently the Nickels family knows no bounds when it comes to money ! "Money is the root of all evil"

Seems like the story behind massive spending of the Mayor of Seattle may be coming to a head. Will the MSM probe further ? no, it is against their religion of liberalism. It's up to the alternative media to carry the torch, so those in Seattle might someday not be financially oppressed - (yeah right)

23. Too bad. Probably a case where Nickels was too busy to be a good father.

Then again, today's kids are so filled with leftist drivel. Jacob and fellow cheaters probably thought they were owed the money because the casinos always win the most.

24. Bob:

I agree with you. People in the public eye who are there by choice have to deal with a public life. Being attacked is part of that bargin. I didn't like it when the private lives of the Bush twins were examined and now in this time of tragedy for this family, even public figures have private family time, I don't like this being exploited. If this kid is convicted, he will have to deal with it. Still, whatever political disagreements there are, I wish this family the best as they attempt to deal with this situation.

25. Bob,

What makes this story so juicy is that Nickles son was screwing over on of the biggest sources of democrat donations: Tribal Casinos.

Apparently Jake hasn't learned not to bite the hand that feeds you.

26. WVH: While parents can't control the actions of their adult children, they can control their own reactions to situations like this. Mayor Nickelbag can either act like Paris Hilton's mom or he can say he will let this situation run its course without interference from him.

This is one of the few opportunities the mayor will have to show he isn't always a typical liberal whiner. So long as he doesn't blame a vast right wing conspriacy, George Bush, or the evil casino security people, he can come out of this situation with some dignity. I read the indictment and the best thing the mayor can do is let justice run its course. We shall see.

27. Something smells rotten!

Fact: We know that the Tribes and certain politicans have a very close relationship.
Question: I wonder how many other politicans have family members working at other Tribal Casinos, etc.

Someone had to know somebody to be able to rise to the rank of Pit Boss at such a young age.

According to several articles young Nickles introduced the one of the ring's conspirators to crooked dealers. There is a old saying that it is assumed that you are like those with whom you associate with.

Nickles has lived in Whatcom County since 2003 however the Voter database indicates he lives at home with his parents and voted in the November 2006 elections. Now just where does he live.... Whatcom Co or King Co.

28. Greg will likely say in a press conference: "It's for the children." Can't wait to see the local legal system give him a soft hand slap and "bad boy" finger shake. He'll cry, apologize to every conceivable group & "go into therapy" like any Hollywood punk. Book deal now being solidified.

If guilty, how about community service cleaning bum urine, trash & excrement from parks, tent cities & graffitti from buildings done by the perps (clientele) that his Dad's administration loves so dearly?

29. I'm a little curious as to how someone so young became a pit boss. Maybe the standard in tribal casinos is a little lower, don't know. But it would be something that curious journalists might look at, and journalists in this town have no curiosity.

What if Nickels the senior pulled some strings to help junior Nickels get that job? Are we allowed to talk about it then?

Posted by: Palouse on May 25, 2007 07:49 AM
30. I think that Janet and Palouse are on to the real story:

1. How many relatives of politicos and/or those with regulatory oversight are employed by casinos directly or by venders that regularly deal with the casinos?

2. Are regulatory decisions being influenced by any flow of funds to those in decisionmaking
positions?

3. How did an individual so inexperienced get this job?

When one studies corrupt systems and systemic corruption, there is a breakdown in the regulatory systems and regulation is replaced by patronage and backroom deals.

31. #27 Fact: We know that the Tribes and certain politicans have a very close relationship.

Further south in America's #1 Weird City one of the City Council member's spouse was given a plumb position, on the board if my memory is correct, of a casino. Did little or nothing and was and was compensated like a Tacoma political insider. This while the Casino in question, who's majority owner had been palced on the Utilities board and was in position to "return favors" by siding with the Council instead of acting in the primary interest of Utility rate payers, was applying for a "varience" which would give him a monopoly waterfront casino.

This isn't something which I would find at all surprising in Washington State. I suspect he went into the "gaming" business with the old man's and perhaps on his advice.

32. Odds are 10 to 1 that he goes to Gambling Rehab.

33. he's a lucky young man--he's still alive. if he (allegedly) did this in Vegas, he'd likely be in a car trunk in an airport with 2 taps to the head. next casino movie perhaps? "Goodnatives."

34. Good sleuthing by Janet & Palouse....
The real story here may very well be how Young Mr. Big actually got that job. Those jobs pay quite well & are highly coveted.
Perhaps a Tribal insider will come forth with the "history".
If I were Mr. Big, I would make immediate restitution to the tribe for the theft by Little Mr. Big.
