Vote McKay '08

Congressman John McKay (R-Seattle). How does that sound to folks? Me? I think I kind of like it.

Before you all go thinking I'm doing another one of my lousy parodies, just wait. The story is in the Seattle P-I so it must be credible.

If you are to believe the sources quoted some prominent local moderate Republicans are kind-of thinking about backing the former federal attorney if he feels the urge to earn a government paycheck again.

What is intriguing is that McKay lives in Seattle. That's Jim McDermott territory.

The article makes a lot of noise about only moderate Dan Evans-style Republicans being able to win general statewide elections. (Tell that to George Nethercutt or Mike McGavick.) There isn't any room, however, in 2008 for McKay to run for a statewide office.

If he decides to go for Governor or Attorney General he doesn't have a dingo's chance of beating Dino Rossi or Rob McKenna in the primary. I don't see him running for Secretary of State against Sam Reed and he won't beat popular Democrat Brian Sonntag in the general if he chose to run for Auditor. Lieutenant governor or Lands Commissioner? Of course not.

That only leaves Congress.

I know Steve Beren is reading this and he's already making noise about tilting against McDermott again in 2008. This is no slight against him.

But how would folks feel about John McKay running for Congress in WA-07 against one of the most despised, scandal-ridden and ineffective Seattle politicians since Mayor Hi Gill? And doing so as a Republican no less?

Sure he's a mo-mo-moderate progressive who was fired for his incompetent handling of alleged voter fraud during the 2004 Governor's recount. I mean he was fired because of the evil machinations of Rovecheneybushhitlertomwalescoverupforeignwaroil. Yeah one of those.

But this is Jihad Jim we're talking about. And you don't think that there aren't Democrats in Seattle who are tired of his drunken grand-standing, distempered attitude and general lack of accomplishments? Hell, McKay might actually have a chance of winning or at least coming within twenty percent.

Tell me you don't find that scenario just a little bit tempting?

I'm registered in WA-08 and you know he has my illegal vote.

***Conspiracy theory alert***

This is almost too diabolical to be just a chance coincidence. A moderate Republican attorney from a liberal city gets canned. A little kabuki theater is put on in the Senate. Wronged attorney seeks vindication by running for elected office against a lame-duck president enabling him to defeat a Democrat incumbent. He caucuses with the GOP who regain the majority in the House.

After orchestrating the 9/11 attacks and directing Hurricane Katrina at New Orleans this must have been child's play for Karl Rove.

1. Don, I love the conspiracy theory. I wonder how long it will take for HA or DailyKos to pick up on it.

As for the prospect I doubt that he can win. Most conservatives will not vote for him because of the 2004 debacle and his lack of willingness to even look into it. From what I have seen of most D's in Wa-07 I doubt they would vote for him, just because he has an R in front of his name.

My belief is that Baghdad Jim will not get defeated until some other Liberal Democrat chooses to run against him in a primary.

2. Don you were misinformed....wrong John.
It's not John McKay but an even better candidate..
They call him John Jacob Jinglheimer Schmidt

DYKR!!!!!!

(Damn You, Karl Rove ... say it with head cocked toward the sky, one fist shaking in the air, whenever Rove is accused of a brilliant, Machiavellian, scheme.)

5. Don, you are 'nasty'. I say that as a person who says his favorite meal is 'nasty' in the hopes I can get seconds when peoply shy from the food when I call it 'nasty'.

6. Show your support John McKay for Congress by opening a post office box in Seattle and registering now!!! Do it several times!! Then vote 'em all!!!

7. "One of the most despised, scandal-ridden, and ineffective Seattle politicians?" Aww, Don, is your puny little right-wing frustration showing?

Here's some news for you and your little SP cult: We LOVE Jim McDermott. Jim McDermott will CRUSH any GOP opposition in his path. Jim McDermott is our middle finger to the lot of you.

And when Jim retires undefeated, we have RON SIMS or ED MURRAY for you. How do you like those apples?

Posted by: ivan on May 17, 2007 08:06 AM
8. If Ron Sims ran in the 8th with an (R) after his name, he'd lose too. McKay doesn't stand a chance.

Posted by: Palouse on May 17, 2007 08:23 AM
9. I can see his campaign slogan now..."I may be an 'R' but you dems KNOW I was on your side" Or this one; "Hey, I hate W too"

10. I'm a good Republican, but I'd never vote for the likes of a John McKay - he's a fraud!

Posted by: Eunice Burns on May 17, 2007 08:33 AM
11. You know what is funny. I heard Congressman McDermott speak a couple months ago, and he mentioned Mr. McKay. He had nothing but praise for him, even though he was a Republican. I wonder when the last time any Republican said anything nice about Jim......

The reason why the righties hate Jim so much is because of the fact that he doesn't pull any punches. He lets his constituents know exactly what the Cons are up to in D.C., and it us usually no good for America, or his district.

It takes a lot of courage to call a lying president a liar, even before he has told the lie in question. Ol Jim probably understood long before the rest of us that practically every word that has come out of Bush's mouth since he started his 1st presidential campaign has been either bile, or a flat out lie.

Jim has the courage to tell us, and that is what makes him different. Far more courage than the average Democrat, or any of the Republicon sheep.

Any true Republican would be calling themselves a Democrat these days. The neo-con bloodthirsty talibangelicals have taken the Republicon party so far to the right that they burn constitutions before every policy meeting.

If you don't believe me, wait till it is you that is tortured, locked up without your family knowing, or a right to talk to a lawyer. Wait till it is your phone tapped without a warrant, or you are prosecuted because you are a democrat, and for no other reason. Wait till Choicepoint determines you are likely to vote for democrats, and Jebbie's gang kicks your veteran ass off the voting rolls so you can't vote.

Better yet, to go along with the Bush Doctrine, wait till ever person on the planet, not living in this country, wants to puke every time the term United States is mentioned.

Wait till our allies number zero......

12. #7 To put it more aptly, Jim McDermott IS a middle finger.

Posted by: NW Denizen on May 17, 2007 08:55 AM
13. Don,

Your sources are AMAZING!

The Cone of Silence was broken at RNC Headquarters yesterday, and I managed to overhear the General Staff briefing about this.

It turns out that the WHOLE US Attorney thing has been a plot to setup McKay to run against Baghdad Jim.

They have been gunning for McDermott ever since the "under God" fiasco with the Pledge. I heard Cheney say that McDermott's "gloomily godless Bush-bashing anti-Americanism" was a greater danger to this country than North Korea.

They even called Rumsfeld in to work on the plan. The map is really nice, and someone even put one of those little souvenir Space Needles on it. Too bad they put it in Burien.

I think McKay is a hero to go through being fired and pilloried in the press, just so he can then run against the Congressman for Life. Too bad all the other US Attorneys had to get fired to give him cover.

Keep up the good work! I'll call you on my shoe phone next week.

14. Wait till it is your phone tapped without a warrant

Yes, good ol' Jimmie knows all about illegal wiretaps doesn't he? He's gone to court and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of them.

Posted by: Palouse on May 17, 2007 09:14 AM
15. I'm still missing why this is so tough to understand.

If Al Capone calls you, your phone call will be recorded. No warrant for your phone will be issued or required. Nor will you get a notice from the government "You were recorded."

16. In the 7th he'd move the normal Republican showing from 20% to 27%.

If he wants to do this, he ought to move into the 1st and run against Jay Inslee. He might have a shot there, especially if the GOP nominates a metro Republican for President like Giuliani or McCain.

Inslee is an empty suit and could be beaten in the right year.

McKay could also look at running for State Treasurer--that's open next year.

17. True Soldier at #1 is completely correct. West Seattlites wouldn't vote for him simply because of the R. My BIL and SIL live in West Seattle and are extremely biased against any Republican. To hear them rail against McCain Sunday afternoon because they guy made a joke singing "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" -- it was clear to me that not only would a R hated by other Rs not get any consideration, they clearly have no sense of humor whatsoever unless it's a lame joke attempt by someone liberal enough like Al Gore.

18. Ivan @ 7: "Jim McDermott is our middle finger to the lot of you."

I'm all for truth in advertising, and there's actually a tremendous amount of truth in that. Can you PLEEEEEASE put that on McDermott's '08 slimjims? Letterhead? Yardsigns would be great, but might be asking a bit much. Still, it would force me to have at least a few grains of respect for you people.

Posted by: TB on May 17, 2007 10:08 AM
19. Of course, breaking the law, or at least trying to, would be something McKay knows a bit about.

One of the largely undiscussed reasons for his firing is his repeated attempts to violate federal law and gain access to NICS background check records under the pretense of investigating the murder of Thomas Wales. These are records that federal courts had said on several occasions were off limits to prosecutors and investigators.

Of course, Baghdad Jim likes playing fast and loose with other folks' civil rights, too, so it'd be a net wash in that area.

20. In a city where women wear hats the size of dinner platters at the first sign of sunshine and men all seem to be in a perpetual Trotsky look-alike contest the chances of a Republican winning a congressional seat has the same liklihood as sighting bigfoot walking downtown.

21. McKay? Never happen. Besides, Seattle deserves Bagdhad Jim. That way, it's ensured of never having any national political relevance, ever. Wait till he decides his son is ready to take over for him. I love legacy congressional districts.

22. Actually, Lies, we don't "hate" McDermott.

To "hate" a scumbag like Baghdad Jimmie is to give him some level of importance... you know, he's right up there with that something you scrape off your shoe when you come back from walking you dog?

That's kinda like saying we "hate" you for your terrorist-supporting, anti-America, fringe-left positions.

Kinda like that?

23. I think BeSquared is right on this one. Even Ron Sims or Christine Gregoire would get their asses kicked in the 7th if they had a "R" behind their names. Even Will Baker or Stan Lippmann could carry the 7th if they managed to become the "D" nominee.

The 1st CD used to cover a lot of Seattle. I think even Queen Anne at one point. Now, it just has a little bit of NW Seattle -- not even 5% of the city. So John McKay would basically have to move in order to run against Jay Inslee.

24. Hinton @ 22:

Thanks for validating my point.

26. McKay will change parties and run as a Democrat, just like that creep Rodney Tom did in the 48th.

27. Geez, Cato, it took you long enough to get the Don's joke. Now, read it again.

28. "Facts" posted: It takes a lot of courage to call a lying president a liar, even before he has told the lie in question.

OK, "Facts", what was the lie? Barring your continued ability to name ONE LIE by the President, you've proven yourself to be nothing but a liar.

Along with the pathological liar and freedom-usurping, wire-tapping Gasbaghdad Jim.

29. I see "facts" is off his meds again.

You know, "facts," if you'd just stay on your meds most likely your psychosis would be under control.

30. Swatter, don't blame me for the GOP sucking so badly. The party dug their own grave. Maybe the GOP needs a new motto, "Put us in power and we'll show you how to really screw things up".

Posted by: Cato on May 17, 2007 04:19 PM
31. Why are you surprised? They just "follow" the Democrat playbook.

I wasn't disagreeing with you in my comment (which I sort of do), but was questioning your sense of humor. That Don Ward guy is downright 'nasty' and gets me everytime. With him, I think I am Charlie Brown kicking the football (or trying to) over and over.

32. Facts I am doing fine thanks for asking and I can tell you personally that the media is blowing things out of proportion. Yes there is viloence, but allot of the tribal leaders are getting pissed at the terrorists and joing the side of the Iraqi government. I have also seen where some of the insurgent groups are laying down their arms and joining the political process to air the grievences.

AS for the presidents so called lie, that would mean that the majority of the D's presidential candidates lied, bill clinton lied, and even the french lied. remeber they had all said the same thing as the president about WMD's back in the 90's duringthe clinton administration. And dont tell me they were tricked by Bush/Rove. If they really were tricked then what does it say about them when they claim that Bush is the biggest idiot on the planet? If Bush can trick them just imagine what a terrorist or a rogue stae (Iran N. Korea ) could do. Not my idea of a great leader.

33. If Republicans had an ounce of sense, they'd do that. They don't, so they won't.

Posted by: murtz on May 17, 2007 11:24 PM
34. Wishful thinking that McKay would run against McDermott and then lose. The goal of that would seem to be McKay is a turncoat SOB as a Republican and it would be nice to see him lose in a small race like that. How about he run against Gregoire for Governor ? That would be more outside the box and keep more Dems guessing.
