Viaduct vote predictions
Today is election day for Seattle residents. On the ballot is City of Seattle Advisory Measure No. 1 and 2. Residents who haven't voted by mail need to shuffle to the nearest post office, drop-off location or at least leave their ballots in an unattended voting machine to ensure that they will be counted by King County Elections.
If you don't want to vote, that's all right too. Because contrary to what you learned in school some elections just don't matter. Especially non-binding advisory measures called for by a governor who can't make a political stand and sees no problem with wasting a million taxpayers' dollars on what is a jumped-up, and inaccurate, public opinion poll.
With that said, what are your predictions for the outcome of this hysteric vote? A Sound Politics No-Prize will be awarded to the best, humorous and/or most accurate prognostication about the results, tunnel, Viaduct, Gov. Gregoire, Mayor Nickels, earthquakes and the gullible individuals who actually donated thousands of dollars in campaign contributions trying to influence this "special" election.
Here are some of mine...
Results:
Both the Tunnel Hybrid and Elevated Structure Alternative will fail to achieve fifty percent of the popular vote.
"No and Hell No" ballots will trail both alternatives.
About three percent of the ballots will be marked "Yes" and "Yes".
The number of blank ballots and votes not mailed in will outnumber all of the above.
Assessment:
Proponents of Greg Nickels' multi-billion dollar tunnel-surface alternative will view today's election results as a victory and will continue their campaign for the decade to come.
Proponents of the alternative multi-billion dollar viaduct rebuild will view today's election results as a victory and will continue their campaign for the decade to come.
Proponents of a surface street option will view today's election results as a sign that Seattle residents don't want either mega-project and will continue their campaign for a surface street option for the decade to come.
Proponents of a viaduct retrofit will view today's election result as a sign that Seattle voters don't know what the hell they want and we should make do with the old Viaduct until someone comes up with a better plan and will continue their campaign until the Seattle Fault shifts.
The proponent of "Tunnel-Yes and Viaduct-Yes 2" will graciously concede defeat and admit that two over-priced mega-projects are not better than one.

1. With a stunning 114% of all votes cast, the Hybrid Tunnel will pass. It will be named the Sims-Nickel Orifice. And we'll end up spending $22 billion to make it, because we can't let the French and English spend more on their Chunnel...
2. Here's mine:
- Nickels and Gregoire both gone in next election
- Both replaced by similarly ineffective leaders worried more about public opinion or legacy than the good of the people
- Earthquake of 2012 takes down the existing viaduct once and for all
- Ports of Tacoma and Long Beach fourish
- We'll all just ride Link from the airport and bike to our downtown jobs
3. Hey, Jackass @1,
Do your basic research, Sims is not pro-tunnel - he's actually a strong advocate for the surface option.
4. Do your basic research, Sims is not pro-tunnel - he's actually a strong advocate for the surface option.
Which, of course, shows Sims for the moron that he is.
Sims is for appeasing the greenies...who want gridlock downtown. Pity they don't realize that increasd traffic is going to start biting downtown businesses. Go on back to horseass, now.
5. Edmonds Dan @1, You forgot it will be 25% shorter than described will take a decade longer to build and will be the source of press release after press release proclaiming that it is "ahead of schedule and under budget."
6. Prediction:
The great global warming scare will be debunked for the business venture it really is. Everyone will go on to other things except Seattle, who will tenaciously keep trying to go greener than green. The tunnel, rebuild, and surface solution all will be abandoned. Seattle City and King County officials will mandate that all those who live in and/or the city and county be issued roller skates, costing millions. Roads and sidewalks must be adapted, costing millions. Mayor Nickels will take a prat-fall while skating in down Seattle and be rushed to the emergency room, along with thousands of others, day after day, costing millions. In fact, King County will ask that Queen Christine declare King County a disaster area requiring federal aid. And they will all be patting themselves on how well the disaster was handled.
7. "...i voted after it before i voted for it."
twice. and in Cowlitz County. and in a Hmong language ballot.
8. After making a 1 mile stretch of road totally divisive among otherwise far left and far right dogmatists - I predict that if the state repugnicans can field a candidate who hikes with their kids and doesn't hate gays it's all over for chrissie's slim margin of support.
9. It wil be interesting to see now, after weeks of being told by just about everyone, how senseless this exercise in voting is, that we have a mandate!
The people have spoken!
It is clear the voters want....insert preferred interpretation of the results here.
10. I have been keeping this to myself, but have decided that it is too important not to share with everyone. Being as the seas are going to rise by "up to twenty feet" (remember the science is "settled" and everyone agrees and there is a consensus and only right-winger nazis disagree) the tunnel option is a non-starter. In fact the surface option would only be usable by Paul Allen in his submarine. Therefore the only real choices are retrofit or replace with another elevated structure.
11. I predict that both options get 51% of the vote, and everyone claims victory. It takes another 20 years to figure out who actually won and what to do, there's another earthquake and surprise, the existing viaduct holds up and the earthquake causes the viaduct to shift back to where it was prior to the 2001 quake. Algore says the quake was caused by global warming and incorporates it into his new slideshow, "Oh, Crap!" and makes a donation to the Geological Tremor Offset Fund (GETOFF), owned and operated by, Algore.
12. I predict the whole mess is yet again another massive waste of tax payer monies despite the outcome which will be whatever the teamsters want it to be after remarking well over 10% of all of our votes in an all mail election.
Count them up 3 times and Ding Ding Ding a winner will appear....
Seen it before, we'll see it again...
13. I PREDICT PAIN.
14. I go along with Palouse's (#11) first sentence - a 51% tie. Then, in the runoff election, 75% of Seattle voters who think this is worth voting about will write in Darcy Burner.
15. Could a compromise be like the Brooklyn Promenade? Meaning, rebuild the Viaduct but lid it so that it is even with downtown/Pike Place Market and becomes a viewing area, walking, etc.? The Brooklyn one is very popular (they even have walking tours). It would give Mayor Nickels some of what he wants (allegedly which is more public access to the views) and would be cheaper (and to my mind, safer) than a tunnel.
16. JDH--
Absolutely brilliant!
Why would any politically correct Seattle Progressive Algore Groupie EVER support the surface option when Global Warming is GUARANTEED to wipe it out.
You are RIGHT. The only option is an elevated structure.
Someone needs to share this with Mr. Chicken Little KLOWNstein.
17. Nobody has figured out the real master plan:
1. Tear Down the Viaduct
2. Build no surface or tunnel option Instead, wall off I-5 at Southcenter.
3. Turn the new third Runway at Sea-Tac into the world's biggest Park `N Ride
4. Run a bus shuttle to the 3 car light rail train which will run once an hour.
18. Since this post has become obsolete, I'll give the nod to Clubber Lang. Your No-Prize is in the mail.
Jimmie gets second for his Jibba-jabba.
