What would MLK have to say about an elected elections director?
 | This week in 1965, the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March
Fast forward to 2007. The same week that King County adopts Dr. King's image as its logo, county government insiders embark on a despicable campaign to thwart the voters' aspiration to elect their elections director. I can't believe that Dr. King would have wanted a county that bears his name to suppress its citizens' voting rights. What do readers think?

1. Off the subject, but for King County to declare itself to be named in honor of Martin Luther King is ridiculous. It would be as if I claimed the William and Mary University was named after my uncle William!
2. My question is when is Larry Gossett going to get the State of Washington renamed? I mean George Washington surely owned slaves and therefore just like King County had to be renamed, the state must be too!
3. How about renaming it the state of Lincoln. He freed the slaves.
4. Gossett is noble in his cause. He may have wanted the raised fist of his former Panthers as a moniker on a flag, but went for the more acceptable visage.
As for MLK, i think he would have been embarassed to have people making a bog to-do over fighting for/focusing on his face on everything while not listening to, understanding & LIVING his words/concepts. maybe i'm wrong--meaningful actions over symbolisms as i read his message?
5. The honest answer is no one knows. This thread and the one below are useful for bringing up one thing. There has been a considerable amount of progress since the struggle for voting rights. But....just under the skin of the society is loads of anger and tension which is ready to come out. The discussion of race issues in this society is not at a point where people feel comfortable. Probably, this generation will have to die off before any further progress is made.
6. Don't worry in a few years King County's name will be changed to Poncho Via and King will be a thing of the past.
7. Pancho Villa perhaps? Let me guess, you think this is funny because it's a Mexican name?
