"Articulate" Biden Tastes Shoe Leather

"Ghetto" speech relates partly to class, but is largely a personal choice not about race. The concept of the "articulate black man" is problematic. And the presidential candidacy of logorrheic U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Delaware) is bruised after he said last week of rival contender Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois), "you got the first mainstream African-American" presidential candidate and he is "articulate," "bright," "clean," and "nice-looking....that's...storybook, man." Eugene Robinson jumps all over that "articulate" thing. Booker Rising too. Stressing alleged rarity of black verbal skills, the now regretful Biden edged toward a class of pitying "progressives" - who through support of quotas and concerns about racial "disparities" and "social justice" - express doubt African-Americans today can surmount "conditions" and control their destinies. That's actually a far worse insult than, "Wow, he doesn't talk like a thug."

1. Stupid comments like that aside, Biden is the only politician in D.C. with an innovative idea for Iraq.

2. This about sums it up:
Biden is Gabby

And while on the subject of worthless Senators (except as fodder for cartoonists) I submit:
John Kerry Has Five Pairs of Hearts

3. That SOB needs to go! He's a racist and a bigot just like his buddy Trent Lott! He's just another neo Nazi! We voted out a bunch of his party's ilk when we took over the House and Senate! Next it's the White House!

Huh? What? Are you sure? Really?

Well the problem is the naysayers really don't understand what he was really thinking. His comments were taken out of context.

Most importantly the Honorable Senator Biden has a plan.

I can't wait until he goes on Larry King and Oprah so he can get the truth out.

I also heard he's writing a book: "Some of My Best Friends Are Negroes." I can't wait until he comes to Seattle for a book signing.

4. The Biden candidacy was doa even before this, but this pretty much seals it dead.

5. Problem is, Joe Biden is a really smart guy and he always believes he's the smartest guy in the room and wants to make sure everyone knows it. Look for more of the same from him because of this tendency.

6. Biden will get a pass on this, just he did when he said that you have to speak with an Indian accent to go into a 7-11, or just as the Hilldabeast got a pass when she said that Gandhi ran the gas station on the corner.

7. The left has lived off of racism for 30 years. The racism chickens are finally coming home to roost as all people learn that the only proper way to judge people is by their merits.

Judge people by their actions, ideas, work ethic, values, etc. and not by their color, other physical attributes or random assignation to a "class" by either themselves or a Marxist Progressive demagogue.

8. To Jeff's excellent point at #7 above, a related and interesting article in today's New York Times. Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/02/us/politics/02obama.html?_r=1&n=Top%2fReference%2fTimes%20Topics%2fPeople%2fO%2fObama%2c%20Barack&oref=slogin

The article highlights the degree to which identity politics - judging and categorizing people by their physical characteristics and ethnic background - is interfering with the use of objective political criteria as a means of judging candidates.

The article, by Rachel L. Swarns (entitled "So Far, Obama Can't Take Black Vote for Granted") makes the point that some American blacks hesitate to support Obama because he is of mixed white (Kansas-born mother) and African (father born in Kenya) ancestry as opposed to being a Black American descendant of slaves.

I don't support Barack Obama, of course, but that's because I don't agree with his views, and because I don't agree with the philosophy of his party. In all fairness, Obama's candidacy should be judged on his political views and governmental philosophy, not on the color of his skin, or the color of his parents' skin, or on the geographical birthplace of his parents.

The article quotes columnist Stanley Crouch as saying "When black Americans refer to Obama as 'one of us,' I do not know what they are talking about."

And it quotes author and essayist Deborah J. Dickerson as declaring "Obama isn't black" and adding, "I've got nothing but love for the brother, but we don't have anything in common. His father was African. His mother was a white woman. He grew up with white grandparents. Now, I'm willing to adopt him. He married black. He acts black. But there's a lot of distance between black Africans and African-Americans."

There are about 20 or more announced or prospective candidates for the presidency, and I suppose there will be a few more before it is all over.

They should be judged by the content of their character, their political views, their governmental philosophy, and their qualifications as a leader.

There are enough legitimate POLITICAL reasons for liberals to support Obama and/or Biden, and there are enough legitimate POLITICAL reasons for conservatives to oppose Obama and/or Biden.

9. Secular progressives view individuals as a collective or voting block. It is instructive to re-visit the statement of Dr. King urging people to be judged on the content of their character. Some of the most vile racists I have encountered on a personal level have been secular progressives. They expected thanks because their global ideology was perfect, but their treatment of individuals is less than desirable. Any person of color who does not agree with their policies is demeaned. I don't necessarily agree with Dr. Rice all the time, but I am not going after her on a personal level. More comments like Biden's will leak out from time to time because that is the way many feel. The best statement of the secular progressive ideology is contained in a "B" movie from several years ago starring Warren Beatty called Bullworth. Secular progressive ideology is built on useful idiots.

10. I wouldn't call Biden "articulate," that implies that he expresses himself well.

Based upon what I've heard, I'd call him "loquacious."

11. The left has leaned so hard on being Politically Correct(PC) that is now coming back to bite them.

Just like PC anti-profiling. We will be bitten by that when the next terrorist attack occurs.

Biden is done, the left will not support him, and he sure isn't a republican!

12. Interestingly, Biden was the man chosen by Strom Thurmond to deliver his eulogy. They were actually quite close.

13. I think Biden has a future as Hillary's fluff boy.

14. Seems like Biden's "articulate" assessment is being interpreted as a comparison with other blacks. Fact is, Obama is more articulate than most whites, blacks or anyone else!

15. Chuck: I agree that Obama is very articulate. He makes sure that he says absolutely nothing of substance, but he sure do say it pretty!

16. When I heard Bush describe Obama as "articulate" I took it to mean that he communicated publicly well. And he does. Like Clinton. Comfortable, relaxed, saying what he wants to say without halting. He is a wonderful public speaker. Like the opposite of Bush himself who is generally such a bad public speaker. I got the general impression that Bush likes Obamba. But when the same word was said by Biden, surrounded by all the other adjective detritus, it sounded so condescending. I got that fingernails thing at that point too. The "clean" made me wonder what the hell he meant but with huge known blovators like Biden, a person tends to roll their eyes and shake their head. He probably doesn't know what he said either, just flapping his jaws, not knowing where/when to stop. The words just fall out.

But I think that Eugene Robinson reads way to much into "articulate", as he expressed in the last four paragraphs. Not to say that he shouldn't be bothered, like I said, it sounded so condescending. But doesn't it seem like Biden thinks that there's nobody quite as good as he is anyway? I think that condemning "articulate" into some sort of white culture "code word" for a "good" black is way off base. I certainly don't take the word articulate in that manner and don't know anybody who does. If that was the case, after 56 years on the planet you'd think that somebody would have clued me in by now. The way I see it, if somebody is articulate, they are articulate and there's not many of them around. Bush sure isn't one of them, and I know Joe Blow would disagree, but he's not one of them either. Or, worse yet, maybe he is.

17. 15, 16--very true.

sadly, most of those elected gassbags just talk & dont think. occasional dumb comments aside (and we're all allowed some) the REAL issue (and threat to us) is Obama's (or any candidate's) VOTING RECORD. that's my interest--their intrusions into my life, business and pocketbook. most importantly, their social engineering experiments on our societies and military.

who cares about an asinine politician's foot in mouth--i care about the many (liberal) government mandates (feet) on my head. Don't tread on me!

18. Biden is one of the very few who has made anykind of solution for the Iraq situation. The only problem is that it will not work. Anyone who knows anything about the history of that region knows that you can not divid Iraq into three parts--it will create many more problems than it will solve.

19. The "articulate" thng is something a GOP senator would have to resigh over, but Biden will not suffer any consequences (other than harm to his essentially non-existent chance of getting nominated).

The thing that bothered me much more was the "clean" part. Does Biden believe that Blacks have poor hygeine? Even a Democrat ought to have to resing over that.

20. He'll probably just use the 'I just got one word word wrong' excuse here pretty soon. Oh. Wait. Didn't he already do that on Comedy Central?

21. If only Biden had said "clean-CUT."

(Pause)

Hey Joe, clear stuff with me first, willya?
