B.E.S.T. for Washington

Republicans in the state legislature are, in spite of their numerical minority, doing an impressive job of formulating an agenda and reaching out to the public. They've inagurated a series of conference calls for bloggers and professional journalists. In last week's call they introduced their agenda, which they're giving the acronym B.E.S.T.

Balance between responsive and limited government

Empowering people

Strengthening Washington families

Trust and transparency in government

More on the website here and here.

In today's call, Reps. Erickson, Chandler and Condotta discussed election reform and tribal compacts. Quotes:
Felon voting bill is "insult to victims"
Same day registration "doesn't pass the straight face test"
R caucus opposes the ban on per-signature compensation for initiatives, and opposes publicly financed campaigns; supports open access to the ballot.
The focus of D gambling laws is "preserving the monopoly for tribes"

1. That's all well and good, but do they support Beagles in Bars?

2. Cool!! Will they be able to get the press?

3. Sloganeering?

That's the best the republicans can do?

Get ready for a long hiatus from meaningful election results if BEST is any indication....

4. You're kidding me right? It's all about image, presentation and selling the R message.

5. Walters, I heard a little about this proposal this morning on the way to work. First off I have yet to see a dog that didn't lick his/her own a-hole and then proceed to lick the rest of his/her fur. Ergo when one pets a dog and then proceeds to eat without washing their hands first they may as well get down on all fours and give old Fido a big wet french kiss right to his posterior. Seeing people cary their mutt around a grocery store makes me sick. You know damn well they are handling the same food and packeges you are taking home to feed to your family with their dog crappy hands.

6. Strengthening Washington families

What exactly does this mean? You feeding them steroids or something?

7. The focus of D gambling laws is "preserving the monopoly for tribes"

Boy, the religious fundies are going to be all over that one. I'm sure they all secretly want gambling establishments setting up in their neighborhood bars.

What next repealing zoning laws for strip joints?

8. JDH, That's all true. But the hard cold fact is that Democrats have trouble getting dates (with the opposite sex) and need those dogs with them when they go bar hopping. (I doubt you'll see many Akitas in gay bars.)

9. Walters, What about dogs in movie theaters? Won't the Washington State Democrats want to take their K-9's with them to the screening of ZOO?

10. Cato, you actually have good comments. But, give the Rs time to come up with better slogans after the written stuff gets vetted.

I thought the gambling vote we took and which you referred to was the most disengenous campaign I had ever seen. And Slade was part of it, too, but many think he is a Democrat anyways.

But, Cato, isn't the gambling laws exactly what the Rs are claiming? The tribes donate big time to Ds. It was said during Gorton-Cantwell that Gorton was lost a year before the election because of Indian money and lies.

11. I was invited to participate in one of these conference calls. (Firearms laws was the topic. Something I blog about.)

I couldn't be involved because they did it at 10:30 on a Tuesday morning, and I have a job.

I'm just wondering if they thought of involving regular folks with regular jobs. Only Dem activists are free at 10:30am on a weekday. (No offense to any retirees out there.)

12. B.E.S.T says:
Republicans will illustrate their priorities through the eyes of a fictional suburban soccer mom named Beth, whose concerns include the Budget, Education, Transportation and Health care.

What would Beth do?

Dear, God!

13. I was invited to today's conference call, but was unable to attend, due to a work conflict. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the conference call!

14. Is this anything like the WIN (Whip Inflation Now) program under Ford? Acronyms are always a bad idea.

15. B.E.S.T.?????
Cultural Learnings of Republicans for Make Benefit Glorious State of Washington captures the true spirit of these lame hacks.
These are sad time for Republicans when our house and senate leaders think B.E.S.T. is going to capture the attention of the media and suburban voters. The Republican caucus is just pathetic.

16. Swatter,

You would like to bring gambling to neighborhood bars so you can take money away from the Democrats? Hopefully the GOP has a better rationale than that for wanting to ease the ban.

17. to R Party in WA:

18. Whatever.

I suppose this crowd is doing their best. It just doesn't appear good enough.

I followed the links and discovered the cause of the problem - the House GOP logo has a giant elephant covering up most of Western Washington that makes it impossible to see the state's population center.

I think they forgot about the place covered up by that elephant.

19. Whatever. Yawn!

I checked out the link and I think I discovered why this type of lame stuff might keep popping up.

On the House GOP web site there is a map of the state with a giant elephant that covers up where most voters live.

Maybe they forgot about all of those voters? They may want to move that big elephant and look at the whole map.

20. Perhaps, thor. And on this one, the capitol building is rendered in such a lovely shade of pink. What IS going on here, ladies?

21. I secretly videotaped the working group as it was developing this BEST strategy. You can view my recording on YouTube.

"Well if Linda thinks its all right, well of course it MUST be."
