3. To those who haven't read it, I highly recommend "Free to Choose". It is free of jargon and very straightforward.

The chapter on the public education system alone is worth the price of admission.

Friedman's positions on the Iraq war, the drug war and immigration prove he was no Republican.
Friedman was a defender of Liberty, free markets and limited government. No big-government neocon, he.
The world is the worse for his death,

Let us work to fulfill his last dream, by totally privatizing education in this country. Vouchers, if any, should only be granted to the poor, and to the greatest extent possible should be funded by private charities. We must break the government school monopoly, that works to the great disadvantage of our urban poor, while helping only the collectivist union bosses.

One day, the Republicans will return to their limited-government, libertarian roots. That day will herald their political resurgence.

6. Bruce, I could not agree more. Republicans are horribly off course, I still voted that way because Democrats are even more off course and more willing to impose collectivism. Big Government has failed us, the party that does a really good job of reigning it in and selling that message, will be the winner.

As for vouchers, I'm more for tax credits. Given the way that the FEMA credit cards were abused after Katrina, I think it would better to encourage people with a tax credit than by giving them a check, even if it could only be spent on education. But either way, the key is to restore competition to education.
