Time To Flush Seattle's Street Toilets?

I give the P-I deserved, ah, crap, sometimes but they can do good reporting. Like today's story about fancy public restrooms downtown. The grand pissoirs are overflowing with drug deals inside or in front, and too often the intended toilet users use the public way instead. Shades of Vancouver. Blame therapeutic public policy; and ongoing police understaffing - see here and here. (Council Member Peter Steinbrueck wants more cops, but has no funding plan). Two words: budget reform. Aesthetes moving into glittering new downtown condos - and the Opera Wing of the Democratic Party - understand the array of "isms" which make people homeless, or drug-dealers or street-crappers. The rest of us? Not so blessed. So unless we work there, we'll let them and the touristas have downtown all to themselves.

1. That article is so much garbage. People are "feeling squeezed economically"?? LIke the Democrats AREN'T going to greet people with a big, fat tax increase if they take power?? The biggest squeeze is that taxes are so high that many people feel pressured to have two income-earners to live and pay the taxes. The American Dream is harder to achieve?? Like the Democrats AREN'T going to make it harder to achieve that with their big, fat tax increases??? They are the kings of getting in the way of your american dream! If you try to better yourself, they will take it out of your hide in extra taxes so you will not get as far as you would like. they will call you "rich" if you are a family of four making $90,000. (Never mind that such a family has no luxury of waking up and just saying "I don't think I'll go to work anymore. I'm too rich." Like they don't have to save for retirement and college for their kids and their home repairs, etc.

Dems are deluded about what they offer the american public. Well, here's what it is: Higher taxes and punishment if you dare try to earn a higher wage next year, sympathy for terrorists, and all the politically correct victimhood you can('t) stand. they offer nothing but words and silliness.

2. I should mention that the article I refer to is the one Matt linked to "Opera wing of the Democratic Party"

3. More like time to flush the streets of the rif raft. My wife and I moved to Belltown 14 months ago as a test before buying one of these overpriced condos.

Both of us were amazed at the stench emotting from the sidewalks during the warm summer days, constant litter, open drug dealing, and insults and intimidation hurled at us as we walk to and from the Market.

Five/six weeks ago His Honor and The Chief were fixing steaks for the homeless in front of the Millionaires Club. Wonder if they do the same for all who've moved in and pay the taxes? If anyone thinks parents will move school-age childern into this downtown they've lost all logic.

East-side looks far more attractive...

5. San Francisco went through this about 10 years ago. It finally came to an end when Willy Brown, the then-mayor tried coaxing the druggies in Golden Gate Park into essentially free luxury condos as "shelter", only to be literally pelted with feces by the grateful Street People when he went to tell them.

In the case of San Francisco, that was the last straw. Hizzonor sent the police in with riot clubs and shields (and bulldozers) and picked the lot of them up, and they we told (while in jail) that if they didn't want to be nice, they really weren't welcome in hiz fair city. Being street people became very unpopular with the Law Enforcement Community and San Francisco ceased being a haven for this human refuse - they went to Seattle (seriously). And San Francisco's livability improved enormously.

The fact is that street people *want* to crap in the street. The entire "thing" is the expression of power by violating social norms. That seems to be what Seattle's leadership can't or won't understand.

At least its consistent. Street People or Terrorists, the idea that there may be people in the world with differing, and disturbing motivation patterns to theirs is very upsetting to the Ds. It frightens them, so they simply refuse to beleive it. In the meantime they take what was one of the most beautiful cities in the world and trash it as a sacrifice on their alter of denial.

6. Another example of how the moonbats have no trouble "flushing" away our tax dollars on schemes that don't work out. Right from the beginning the opposition to these miracle latrines said it would increase drug dealing and prostitution because of the size and location of the units, but, hey, what do the business owners and residents in the area know?

We need to decrease the services to the homeless (like free apartments for drunks, steak dinners, and tent cities) and require 6 hours of community service each day the homeless person expects a meal and bed. Provide one way bus tickets to any city Greyhound services for those who don't want to do anything in exchange for food and shelter. $700,000/year will buy a lot of tickets.

10. Another great example of how the Left's first instinct for any issue is to coddle, enable and and subsidize.

Violent Muslims coming at us? The Left says we need to be more tolerant and suppresses any free speech that might further incite.

Minority admissions low for WA Universities because of cultural indifference? The Left says we need to subsidize matriculation with affirmative action.

Some people content to enter the workforce at minimum wage? The Left says that we need to raise minimum wage because someone ought to be able to live well without any skills or value add to our economy.

Bums pissing in the streets? The Left erects fancy pissoirs.

It just goes on and on with apologies and politically correct justifications, etc. And so it's no surprise that as it was during the middle ages, now again, sewage is flowing freely in our streets.

That's the plan. The Left wants the overall direction of human achievement and self reliance to go backward in progress and time.

11. the toilets are trophies to the Left--

for all the reasons Jeff 10 stated--soft on crime, personal responsibility not stressed, tail groups wagging the dog, throw more money at the problem. i knew these would be disasters when first installed--gut feelings and knowing Seattle politics.

keep appeasing the wrong parties--see where you wind up? put the toilets on the Mayor's/councilmenbers'home streets or in the lobbies of the downtown highrises where the liberals live. watch how fast things change.

12. Getting the hell out of Seattle city limits was one of the best things I ever did. Life in the suburbs beats living "in the city" any day: lower taxes, lower crime rate, less traffic, less noise, higher standard of living, better quality of life, better roads, better schools, no panhandlers or public drunks, no smell of feces wafting off the street on a summer day....

13. and what's the point of having more cops? their hands are tied by their leaders' p.c. tolerance traditions, special victim groups and lib lawyers. they don't clear streets or crack heads anymore. they are not respected.

i support more cops, but in Seattle it's like adding more soldiers with empty rifles to a battle theatre. if you want to fund more cops, cut some city departments like diversity, immigrant aid, sister cities and other fluff bureaucracies.

Posted by: jimmie-howya-doin on October 5, 2006 11:39 AM
14. H Moul,

NIce work. I think that over time, the real folly of the Left Leaning Urbanization strategy will begin to be exposed. It's going to be RightFlight and a lot more when the current urbanization trend runs its course. Especially if the left is allowed to continue with the Pay Toilets, Expensive Bum Housing, etc. At some point, they end up ghettofying enough of Seattle that a real exodus begins. Add to that more lax personal responsibility, a dwindling tax base as boomers retire, a growing shortage of cops and appeasement that leads to more terror in the dense urban centers and you can literally kiss a lot of people goodbye as they head out to the safer suburbs.

15. DUH ---->> 40 years ago the original historical skid road was from Western to 3rd - king to marion and on up first to Pike st >>> wall to wall bums and heavy duty alcoholics -- were known as WINOS - peeing here - puking dere - defecating everywhere - here a pee - dere a puke and everywhere a piece to resist - HA HA HA -- now we got moonbat mayor serving steaks to bums and talking up the BS of more downtown residency -- Mega priced CONDO's -- and NO one in their right mind would buy in to them and live downtown -- the useful idiots that front for the a-holes that run this tiddly-wink city have their collective heads stuffed clear up(down) their collective non-self-cleaning toilies

16. Bruce @ 5: Ah yes, Willie Brown. I still remember the day back in the early 80s when I was in SF and pulled up next to a Porsche 911 with then SF city councilman Willie at the wheel, a couple of scantily clad blondes squeezed in with him. I recognized him instantly, and gave him the thumbs up. He flashed that slick Willie smile and winked back as if to say, "Wouldn't you like to be me about now?"

17. 700k per unit for private drug deals and hookers.

+

700k per year for cleaning a self cleaning unit

Anyone see a problem with that?

If not you should run for the democratic office of King County Councilperson.

You would be a perfect candidate!

18. By the way Matt, thanks for pointing out this absolute waste of multi millions of taxpayer dollars out. The Seattle Times article you linked was also a very telling read.

And these are the same people designing your vote by mail, and a 10+ Billion dollar tunnel to bring more cars into Seattle (gee I thought they wanted cars out of Seattle).

Watch your Nickels Work!

21. At $1914 per day to extra, to clean "SELF CLEANING" toilets, I can think of no better person to appoint for this duty than our dear friend IVAN. It is truely his calling. And since he is a Union Hack, he would probably get quite a raise.

Posted by: gs on October 6, 2006 06:32 AM
22. Sorry gs, but iban is too busy changing the urinal cakes down at party HQ. You might be able to coax him with an armload of bananas however...

Posted by: alphabet soup on October 6, 2006 09:52 AM
23. I thought $1915 per day in wages, and a prostitute and drug dealer in every corner, might indeed entice him. But you are right, that would mean he would make $700k per year, and he'd then have to deal with his own party wanting all of his new money in tax hikes, and that may not be pretty!

24. Here's how to make it work: Put potty goers through a security check before they are allowed to use the facilities. Each potty should be equipped with a metal detector, an armed bathroom attendant, a freight scale and a drug-sniffing dog. Once the potty goer has passed through the metal detector, been patted down, weighed, ID'd, questioned as to the intent of the visit (as at the border crossing) and sniffed, he/she/it may proceed into the facility. Once inside, multiple security cameras will track and monitor the activities of the visitor. Products deposited into toilets/receptacles in the facility will be routed to a holding tank, where skilled technicians will analyze them for drugs/explosives/contraband goods. When the analysis is complete, the doors will open, allowing the visitor to exit. The visitor will be reweighed, to validate the purpose/outcome of the visit. An additional armed escort will conduct the visitor a safe distance from the facility. In this way can our public toilets be secure and drug-free.

(Or, you can just go before you leave home.)

***Frequent users may be issued a PACE sticker, which will allow them to bypass the security screening process. In order to obtain a sticker, applicants must pass a background check and provide appropriate documentation.

25. Peggy--excellent--and--put me in one of those and then take me, potty & all (via train or monorail) to SeaTac for my flight--i'll pass security and have an empty bladder for the flight to boot! and--zero terrorist potential.

now for the cost--Seattle imposes yet another "Secure Flight Blue Ice initiative" property tax assessment--a painless 30% and it's "tested" over 20 years.
