The subject of Vote by Mail and the efficacy of relying on Absentee Ballots during elections has been a subject that has been brought up once or twice here at Sound Politics...

For those of you who have been deleting the scores of fundraising e-mails crowding your inbox you might have come across this latest plea made by Republican National Committee Chair Ken Mehlman.

"Dear Donald,

I'll make this short and to the point. Please make sure you get your Washington absentee ballot application by clicking here now.

With Washington providing for more early or absentee voting, it's easier than ever to cast a vote at your convenience. At GOP.com/VoteEarly, you can get your early voting application and find out what the rules are in your Washington. Just enter your name and address to get your personalized application, fill out the rest of the form, print it out, and mail it in to your local election official.

There is no more important political activity than voting. By voting early, you can help decide this election long before Election Day. Cross this important item off your fall to-do list by getting your early voting application at GOP.com/VoteEarly.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman
Chairman, Republican National Committee"

Shezam!!! With that sales pitch I think I'm going to register for a whole passel of those absentee ballots just to be sure.

Now I know the political establishment in both parties back in D.C. get an extra digit or two on their paychecks each week for being smarter than everyone else. After all, they can convince people to pay their political salaries so they can have the resources to ask for more money from the same people to fund campaigns.

I realize it's a blanket nationwide e-mail but one would think that the RNC would couch their Get out the Vote strategy in a slightly different manner. At least to the party faithful in King County and Washington state who have a few bones to pick about the effectiveness and security of absentee voting.

1. I have more than a few bones to pick with Snohomish County! I have just gotten off the phone with Jennifer from the elections office. I have been checking the web site daily and it is still showing that my ballot has not been received, even though I put it into a drop box on election day! I dropped off my husband's at the same time and his was counted on September 21st. She assures me that my ballot IS really there, and that it REALLY has been counted, but she doesn't know WHY it won't show up in the system. Her supervisor has also looked at it and has no explanation and, naturally, everyone in management has been in a meeting ALL DAY and can't be bothered! Anybody have any serious suggestions as to where I go from here?

2. Should we object to Republicans promoting absentee ballots? I mean what sense does it make to promote a policy that would limit Repulbican voter turnout when Democrats will be voting multiple times, while pushing illegal aliens, felons, and even the dead into voting?

Republicans have to be smart about this. If we can wrestle control of Washington away from Democrats, then we can reform systems like Elections. Until then, not playing the game by the rules the Democrats have created, whether right or wrong, only benefits the Democrats.

3. By voting by mail, many of us have no choice now, in most counties the auditor releases names of the voters returning their ballots. Once again, in counties other than King, the lag time between receiving the ballot confirmation and actually mailing it is 3-5 days.

Anyone can get the list and compare it to the registered voter rolls. The parties and special interest groups do this so they won't waste resources calling or mailing to you early voters during the final GOTV push.

Hate the calls and stuffed mailboxes, vote as soon as you receive your ballot, your phone will be very quiet.

5. suzihomemaker #1. Get in your car and drive over there and demand that your ballot be counted. Get pissy about it. Ask to show them, on their very own computer, that your vote hasn't been counted and your husband's has. Make a stink. They may call the police but that would only get the news cameras there and then you can tell it to them.
