Mrs. Gregoire unapologetically backs down from ethics misstep

Mrs. Gregoire is defiantly backing down from her earlier attempt to sell meal tickets to the governor's mansion:

[Mrs.] Gregoire on Monday heatedly defended her decision to auction off a dinner at the governor's mansion to raise thousands for congressional challenger Darcy Burner, but said she's moved the dinner to a restaurant after an ethics complaint was filed.

"The place isn't up for rent. The place isn't up for sale," the governor [sic] said.

The mansion's occupant is also complaining about the burdens of occupancy:
Come live in it for a week. It's a difficult place to live in, folks. There are guards there all the time and you're not free to do a whole lot. ... I'd like to have a private life."
May her private life begin in January 2009.

1. She can have it now... Just resign Mrs. Gregoire.

2. I find it interesting that our Governor is surrounded by guards all day, and it seems all night, but our congressional members who were campaigning at the public Puyallup fair the other day had no such guards or any need for them.

Go figure. I guess our governor ranks higher on the security list then our congress.

3. cry me a river. turn it into a Tent City Mansion. unbelieveable--Dems are never happy. trust me, honey, many can't WAIT till you're a 'private.' what's worse, among the dust bunnies are yet MORE 2004 votes!

let's see her right-wing conspiracy-induced tantrum like exPrez's when called on one's actions. shake that finger in the camera & point at us voters: "I--did--NOT--have--dinner--with--that contributor!"

5. She can heatedly deny anything and claim that the Governor's mansion isn't for rent or for sale, but the fact is - she did sell it - for campaign fundraising!

I am still waiting for the story in the Olympian. I will probably be waiting for a long time. Amazing how they seem to give her passes to do anything she wants.

6. 1)I feel her pain---I invite her to enjoy a private life as soon as she wishes. Tomorrow would be fine.

2) "The place isn't up for rent. The place isn't up for sale." So why then is she trying to sell visits to the place? Her actions have not matched her words.

7. Boooo hoooo. Wants a private life. Should'a thought about that before running for Governor.

Someone ought to audit her after the winning dinner to make sure that it is paid for out of private funds and not by the state, or as a contribution from a sympathetic Democrat restauranteur.

Score one for Pope.

8. and btw, I'm certain that when Dino gets in, he won't be whining about hard how life in the mansion is. I'm sure he'll be a grown-up about it and already have considered what restrictions he will have to put up with.

Perhaps Gregoire should not have run, considering the feelings she expressed about her current lifestyle. It's hard to believe she didn't know what she would be getting herself into.

9. Here is the editorial comment from The Olympian on Saturday, September 23, 2006, disapproving of Gregoire hosting a political fundraiser in the Governor's Mansion:

"Thumbs down: Gov. Gregoire

State ethics regulators will investigate whether Gov. Chris Gregoire broke the law when she auctioned off a dinner at the Governor's Mansion at a fundraising event for a fellow Democrat's congressional campaign. Gregoire has denied any wrongdoing, saying any expenses for private use of the historic residence on the Capitol Campus are routinely paid for through a special account established with unspent campaign dollars. Complainant Richard Pope said the governor's actions are a violation of the law that says public property cannot be used to benefit political campaigns. The law is on the book for good reason. Gregoire could have avoided the whole flap if she had volunteered to host the dinner at her private residence in Olympia instead of the state-owned mansion. It will be interesting to see how the Ethics Committee rules on this case."

There should be a news story about this in tomorrow's The Olympian by Brad Shannon also.

"I'd like to have a private life."

12. Everybody should click on that link and read the article. And then, read it again. Don't read the snippets or comments here; read the article.

The disconnect she has with her role as a public servant is stunning.

Say what you will about Gary Locke, Mike Lowry and Booth Gardner, but at least those governors understood their role and had a modicum of grace in holding the office. Gregoire? Arrogant and beligerent barely scratches the surface.

13. So since when did a political contribution become part of one's private life.
Only in a democrat's playbook!

Posted by: Gs on September 25, 2006 04:51 PM
14. Add:

"You know, I think there is something fundamentally wrong when I can't invite somebody into my private quarters at the mansion, buy the food and my husband and I make them dinner.

You can, Chris. You just can't do it and use those proceeds to fund a campaign. Got it?

20. The Gov. evidently believes that being a liberal Democrat means you never have to say you're sorry, just like the remainder of the rank and file Dumocrats.

21. Who says there's no such thing as karma? The fraudline is paying the price for her complicity in the 2004 heist. She's learning that a stolen apple is often full of worms.

Gregoire so wants to be loved, but she is the jealous queen to Rossi's Snow White. You know how that ended for the queen...not pretty.

Posted by: Organization Man on September 25, 2006 07:14 PM
22. Jeff,

Gotta disagree. Locke was so non-existent, hiding under his desk whenever the legislature was in session, he was more pitiable than hateable. And a good villain MUST be hateable. Mrs. Gregoire fills out that role very nicely: sharp-featured, wicked-fairy-tale-queen face; piercing, evil eyes; haughty, arrogant, combative nature; blatant cynicism in her broken campaign promises; and a suspicious resemblance to Vladimir Putin (ever seen them in the same place at the same time? didn't think so). Call Central Casting, and tell them we've got a gal they should hear read the lines for the Ice Queen.

Gary Locke, in contrast, was like one of those pages whose only text reads, "This page intentionally left blank." Harder to hate, but harder still to want to follow.

OK, that's my contrarian rant of the day. I feel better now.

23. Organization Man,

That's just a little scary that we came up with the same metaphor at the same time... =)

24. Locke's career as a politician ended the night he presented the Democratic rebuttal to the State of the Union address. I still cringe just thinking about it.

25. One of those guards she looks down her nose at is one of my best friends. He had that duty under Gov Locke. They are almost all State Patrol cadets who are picked for their sharp looks and passive outward personalities...and the ability to keep their mouths shut if you want to become a policeman anywhere in the state. They keep to the entrance/exist aspects of the house so he whining about not being able to do what you want is BS.

Posted by: sokala on September 25, 2006 08:26 PM
26. Maybe someone should ask the Queen about the Inaugural Ball night when she and a group of drunken party members damn near burned down the "peoples house" when they lit a fire in the fireplace not realizing the flue had been sealed during the Locke administration because of a bat infestation. Now she wants to sub-let on behalf of a sub-par congressional wannabe? Maybe she's still on the sauce. Hey did Darcy take the money? Inquiring minds want to know.

27. Hey, now that Miatta! Mike's campaign is over, it's good to see you all focusing on 2008. Maybe one of these days you'll actually discuss an issue that voters care about. Untill then, count on OUR Governor to continue to climb in the polls and continue to dutifully make the sacrifices that come with the highest office in our state.

Posted by: Sorry Charley on September 25, 2006 08:54 PM
28. Hey GS @ 2,

You do know that, like the president, our Governor is in command of millitary troops and must be on call and protected at all times in order to maintain a proper command structure, don't you?

Last time I checked, members of the legislature have zero responsibility from now until January. Are you and your friends here so out of touch with reality that you don't understand the basic structure of our state government? Maybe that's why voters have consistently rejected republicans in this state year in and year out.

BTW: Jimmy @ 16, is possibly guilty of a http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=9A.36.090">class 'C' fellony. How's that for taking the office seriously?

29. Queen Christine fought tooth and nail, not to mention cheating for this job, and is now complaining about lack of privacy?

Get a clue stupid...better yet just resign, then she can have all the privacy she wishes.

30. Sorry, I didn't see that announcement or are you hitting the pip again?

I do have a question for you....what are you feelings on the Gov auctioning off the dinner in breach of the law/ethics code? I will give her the benefit of the doubt and say she and none of her staffers had any idea that it was improper...but now to know it is and to be so dissmisive of the law, you must see that she doesn't care for it or want to abide by it. Like lots of liberal people.....it's against the law (rioting, setting fire to new construction, letting animals free, allowing illegals to vote) but we (libs) can break it for the greater good or just the idea that it will make them feel better....

That is what is so wrong with her....

Posted by: Dengle on September 25, 2006 09:50 PM
31. What is wrong with her is that she did not and still doesn't HAVE A CLUE that something as stupid as offering up the People's owned Governor's Mansion for a hack political contribution was wrong.

That is truely amazing to me.

She was the WA STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR 12 LONG YEARS... it was her job to know.

Dear illegitimate queen, lying is a sin. As the 'devout' Catholic that you claim to be, you will be hitting the confessional this week, won't you?

35. forget the sloppy joe's at the Mansion--i still want my money back for her blown legal deadlines that cost us millions in legal settlements. Right, Cheryl--former AG's don't play dumb.

she wants to raise money? cut the damn payments and bene's to illegal aliens in WA! no citizenship, no state benefits. simple. trespassing is not "hard-working"

36. Sorry Jimmie@35, you can't get your money back when a public official messes up (unless it's for personal gain of course). Your only recourse is to vote them out. Otherwise I'd be suing GWB for $1 trillion for the Iraq mess.

37. good point Bruce. sue away. you leaped/weaved from local to national-international. so, i'll oblige you.

your comfortable lil arse is still here in the USA. why? maybe CN, france or madrid can protect you better. seems like the minority in London have the upper hand in a land once ruled with a fist of the law.

mine is not an "R" flag-waving view. i hate incompetence & love to bang the guilty--whomever-party irrevelant.

now--to you--'incompetence' is probably relative--like all liberal views--it's all relative. fine--but not for me. i'm happy that you have your views. Mine differ dramatically. that's America.(at least for now)

try our differing views & these free exchanges in other countries like Iran, Cuba, China, N. Korea.

and yes--i will vote them out. not "do a coup" like the Thai or others who get the AP news spread like heroes.

38. Just like the day she moved in the Governor's office - she would have to be dragged out of there kicking and screaming !

I relish the day in Nov. 2008, when she gets her butt kicked and is ushered out of there by her worthy opponent, likely Mr. Rossi or if Dino doesn't run, Rob McKenna..

39. Charley 28--wow--quasi attorney prosecutor wannabe whiz with the code, eh? since when do (1st amendment) literary-historical metaphors in a blog constitute gubernatorial threats? your ridiculous notion is like the lobbying of the Dems on the recent 9-11 TV episode. censorship ok unless it's against YOUR version. and lib blog posts at other sites are genteel? obviously you haven't read many posts here to compare mine.
