Charlize Does Seattle

Dishy actress Charlize Theron will star in "Battle In Seattle," the directorial debut of her boyfriend, actor Stuart Townsend. The film will highlight the committed activism of window-smashing anti-globalization anarchists and their allies in the Seattle street riot during the 1999 World Trade Organization conference here. Writing at Cinematic Happenings Under Development, Devin Faraci exults:

What was great about Seattle was seeing people getting more upset by a Black Bloc anarchist throwing a rock through a Starbucks window than the shockingly negative effects WTO policies have on poor countries, poor people and the environment. It was a good look at how basically corrupt, lazy and stupid many people in this country are - you get outraged about a pane of glass in a megacorporation swillery but the undemocratic and non-transparent systems of the WTO as they pillage the planet doesn't get a mention.

Like the bumper sticker says: If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention. But what I want to know is: Who should play then-Mayor Paul Schell, whose political career began to crumble post-WTO? And who will be cast as then-King County Sherriff (now Republican Congressman) Dave Reichert - who challenged Schell's weak response, chased Radio Shack looters during the WTO riot, and was then told by Schell the mayor would "personally destroy" him? Or will local officialdom get the generic treatment, script-wise?

Elsewhere on the WA protest front, 100-some protectionist South Korean farmers are due in Seattle next week to protest free market principles during negotiations here on the Korea-U.S. Fair Trade Agreement. To boot, the Raging Grannies and two male guitar-playing "grumps" will sing protest songs against depleted uranium munitions stored at Naval Magazine Indian Island, for a special on public access cable TV in Jefferson County. Ah, Vive la Resistance!

1. protesters: If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.
Jimmie: if your paying THAT much attention, you're living off of us, deadbeat.
Q: If seattle is a 'hate-free' zone, how do protesters justify rock-throwing and vandalism?
And Charlzie--another news weatherbunny.
Movie credits: who will play Councilgoof Gossett, the Bullhorn Bully?

2. Jolly.

And I didn't know that we as law-abiding, tax-paying (waay too much) citizens that we were corrupt. And I didn't know that my hub's super-duper efforts to run a small business--with all the responsibililties he has taken on that go with it--- with employees was lazy!??

And I will never forget those images of Sheriff Reichert chasing down those looters, instead of letting them have the run of the place, the way Schell and other city leaders let them.

3. I think they should get the guy who played J. Peterman (John O'Hurley) to play Reichert...and as long as they're at it they could get Jason Alexander to play Schell and even Michael Richards to play Girly-kowski ;'}

4. I think Tom Selleck would be a great Dave Reichart. After all, he played Dwight Eisenhower in IKE: Countdown to D-Day. Just as chaos threatened to envelop, Ike and Reichart stayed cool.

5. alphabet soup, Norm Stamper was Chief of Police at the time of the WTO riots. Mr Kerlikowske was still at the US Department of Justice then.

6. Well, lets see...it will take them about two and a half years to do this so they will release it in 2009 for the 10th anniversary of the riot. Oh my...what a happy opportunity to do it all over again!

In the meantime, chances of me spending a dime to see this...0!

7. What else should you expect of Hollywood? After all, their main purpose is to do "make-believe" in front of movie cameras to entertain us.

8. Hollywood agenda = barf. These people are as out of touch with reality as Seattle Newspaper Editors.

Ditto - chances of me spending a dime to see this...0!

11. I don't recall any of the anarchists or Seattle city officials involved in the WTO mess as looking that good.

12. Because normal people don't think that WTO is a bad thing and that trashing the city IS, Devin Faraci thinks that the non-believers are lazy, corrupt and stupid. The guy has GOT to get a mirror.

When nobody agrees with them it's everybody else that is wrong. The common leftist lament is that they can't be heard. No . . . nobody is listening.

13. John425 at 9--i condemn to you to sensitivity & diversity training--the classes will be hosted by (ahem) ME--(a parasite consultant)--tee hee--

the funding? another 1% property tax assessment on the idiot Seattle landowners who love these Nickel-dime fundings; oh--bring your toothbrush--this is an on-site training class--in Tent City; (grin)

14. Nothing quite like the mindless, banal, disingenuous drivel of a retarded limousine leftist.....

15. Another example of how out of touch Hollywood is with reality. Ms. Theron should really find time in her super busy schedule of hair appointments, workouts, script readings, parties, and wardrobe fittings to learn the facts, but that ain't gonna happen any time soon.

For all the corporate bashing these celebRetards do, they would be wise to actually use their gray matter for once and determine exactly what it is that makes our society a successful one and why others can't get out the gate.

This ditz obviously doesn't understand it is evil corporate policies that allow her to live a life of luxury. Theron and Townsend should leave their bank accounts behind and move to a third world country of their choice for at least 5 years so they can live amongst the "downtrodden" and feel their pain.

16. Whatever.

17. Done up in the genre of Spinal Tap (hapless idiot leftists and their oh-so-deep thoughts filmed by an admiring but mediocre filmmaker as they encounter wardrobe malfunctions, wrong-sized props, and confusing (for them) street directions on their quest to produce the largest demonstration ever), this could have serious comedy potential. Must include the dancing sea turtles; they were priceless.

But something tells me these folks don't see the comic potential in WTO.

[sigh]

18. Diogenes #6 you are right they probably will release for the 10th anniversary. Do you think the rioters may riot the movie seeing as it is making a profit off of the poor who rioted during the WTO in 1999?

19. I'd fifty dollars to hear Chalize pee in a plastic bucket over the telephone!

20. dammit, Larry Cable--

you are worse than John425; bingo, into my paddywagon for diversity & sensitivity training; (hey--i'm loving this consulting gig--money a-flowin)

i've set up a room for you; every wall of the 4 padded walls are painted with murals; graffitti? 'urban art? i think not; it's a 10x10 feet mural of Ruth Bader Ginzburg--there--that will snip those decorative auto store things hanging from your truck's tow bar!
