"The Flags of Our Sons"
This op-ed in the NY Times falls outside of the normal topics covered at Sound Politics, but my God is it good. Excellent writing, moving content.

1. Eric it is the true stories such as these that truly move you and touch your heart. Being a vet I was honored to be able to be both a pall-bearer and part of the 21 gun salute at many a military funeral and there is no words to describe the tremendous feeling that comes over you during such a funeral. From the respectful and precise moving of the fallen soldiers casket to the playing of "taps" the level of emotion and the respect shown by all the members of this truly "honor guard" is something you never forget.
Thanks again for posting this and God Bless Ameirca and all those who gave everything so we can remain the land of the free and the home of the brave!!!
2. A well-written and touching piece.
However--and this is hardly nitpicky--"Marine" should have been capitalized, mr. shore.
3. Very surprised the NY Times actually published this. Perhaps it will remind some people that we are the land of the free because of the brave. My prayers are with his family.
4. May God be with the fallen hero and his grieving parents.
5. Moving--God bless all our fallen brave. Too bad today's society thinks patriotism is hokey or not in vogue. That's sad. All we have in America is based on someone's past brave sacrifices--blood, sweat, personal denial, tears and life itself. I hope it does not take another 9-11 to rekindle our love of country. Say--are we naming post offices, schools and buildings after these heroes? We should.
6. Wonder if Teddy will follow up on this one. Be interesting to know.
As for the guy who made whatever remark he did to the mother, I would hope that later one of the Marines would take him aside and inform him very forcefully that he was wrong to do what he did.
The other thing I noted was the number of people who ignored the whole thing. Are people really so dense that they do not realize what the Marine Honor Guard is there for?
