Mrs. Gregoire has sent an invoice to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, demanding $50 million reimbursement from the federal government to cover the state's costs of incarcerating criminal illegal aliens in Washington prisons.
Surely, it's primarily the feds' responsibility to protect legal residents from illegal immigration. But Mrs. Gregoire also bears some responsibility for the problem of criminal illegal aliens, as her own policies provide incentives for more illegal immigrants to come here in the first place.
As the Evergreen Freedom Foundation reminds us, Mrs. Gregoire's administration provides non-emergency medical benefits to illegal immigrants. She also objects to federal laws that would require verification of legal residency for Medicaid recipients. She opposes sensible identification checks for foreign visitors entering the United States from Canada, encourages Mexican citizens in Washington schools to study using a Mexican curriculum, promotes what is effectively an amnesty program for illegal immigrants, and declines to require the Washington National Guard to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border.
Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at July 18, 2006 09:44 AM | Email ThisI also thought the arguement was that illegals were a net plus for the economy. Surely the feds should be sending her a bill for all the illegals coming to WA, and the benefit WA is getting for the feds' lack enforcement.
Which is Chrissy? Or does it depend which group you are pandering to today?
Posted by: Fred on July 18, 2006 10:01 AMdiscount college fees to illegals and a host of other bene's to illegals while our own legal citizen veterans, seniors and disabled who paid in to the systems get diddly squat; an upside-down world; remember her recent gracious hosting of Presidente Fox? Why wasn't an invoice laid on his placemat at the formal gov mansion dinner?
This whole benefit thing to illegal immigrants is an affront to the sheep taxpayers who just pay and bleat. When do we end it? When we are sucked dry and it's too late for everyone to recover? We do not have an unlimited purse for all the world's freeloaders. Again I say--dry the well--the 'free drinkers' will leave on their own.
Posted by: Jimmie-howya-doin on July 18, 2006 10:01 AMFor the Medicaid eligibility the state is taking it upon itself to be the one to pay for the documents needed instead of putting the reponsibility on the recipients (federal law does not require the states to do this). If the state had been verifying ID all along as they should have, we wouldn't have this mess.
As for the crooks, send them back to the hoosegow at home. Bus tickets would be a lot cheaper. And make a big deal about it so the Mexican government can't look the other way. I am sure the locals will be pleased to see the lowlifes returned home.
We have a problem because for too long the state has chosen to look the other way. The chickens have now come home to roost. As for the prison costs, take away the amenities and serve a limited menu. Do just enough to maintain sanitation, but make it austere enough so word will spread that this is not the state to be arrested in. The sheriff of Maricopa county doesn't see too many repeat customers--those who decide to reoffend go elsewhere.
Posted by: Burdabee on July 18, 2006 10:41 AMWhy just 2 years? Why not go back to 9/11/2001 or would that portray former Governor Gary Locke in a poor light
Brian Sontag, State Auditor, has already caught Christine Gregoire paying for nonapproved procedures and non US Citizens
I can understand Christine Gregoire and British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell asking President Bush to delay proposed passport rules for people trying to enter the United States, but to be taken seriously Christine Gregoire needs to enforce the existing regulations first
Requiring passports will slow the cars crossing the border, but why are cars less subject to scrutiny than passengers on an airplane or boat
Also the terroists for 911 and the millenium bombing did enter the US via Canada, so unfortuneately we have to redo the procedure when the individuals enter the US (versus accepting the Canadian review)

Posted by: TrueSoldier on July 18, 2006 11:17 AMThank you so much for your concern. To verify your claim, we require the following information on each and every illegal alien:
Name:
Age:
Current Address:
Once we are able to locate each of these individuals, you and I will sit down and have a chat about how they all ended up in your state in the first place.
Regards,
