Yesterday's P-I published this guest op-ed "'Never again' gone mad in Israel". For some reason, the P-I editorial page has a fetish for printing op-eds from depraved individuals who shrug their shoulders at terrorists who attack random Jews for the hell of it, but whine and moan when Jews have the nerve to defend themselves.
Meanwhile, I'm listening to Israel Radio news live on the Internet -- the Hizbollah has rained dozens of Katyusha rockets on the major cities throughout the northern part of country, including Haifa and Safed. Dozens of people have been injured and at least two have been killed. The Israeli Navy is now blowing up the fuel tanks at the Beirut airport. Anybody care to wager when we'll see the first editorial in a Seattle daily criticizing Israel for escalating the situation?

Posted by: Obi-Wan on July 13, 2006 12:16 PMIn Tolan's warped and slanted assessment he blames this on Israel's response to a kidnapped soldier. Hmm, he conveniently overlooks the fact the soldier was kidnapped during an offensive armed raid upon an Israeli military installation.
Rather than criticism Israel should be commended for putting up with the BS it has for the past few years. Sure Israel is bombing and lobbing artillery. Their targets are specific and tactical unlike random innocents on buses and in restaurants being blown up. Unlike indiscriminate rockets lobbed into Israel.
Israel should be criticized for waiting too long. Thankfully they didn't cut and run as happened with the USS Cole.
Israel has every right to defend itself. The papers conveniently forget to mention that the Israelis are greatly outnumbered by Arabs. Israel knows it is smarter to nip the problem in the bud instead of waiting until it escalates. More power to them as they send a strong message to the terrorists of the world.
For all those who are bleating about how terrible it is for the terrorists, why don't you go over there to show your support by standing in front of the targets? The scumbags will be happy to have you sacrifice yourself for their cause while they run away to alert the media.

Posted by: Janet S on July 13, 2006 04:22 PMIt's a mystery to me why anyone would lift a pen in support of Hezbollah. But, Seattle is full of people with insular and unrealist views of the world.
Posted by: BananaLand on July 13, 2006 05:59 PMPerhaps it's because over the years the attitudes of the parties has been reversed. Where once the Dems were Israel's defenders, now it's the Reps.
Perhaps it's because most American Jews are somewhat detached from Israeli politics, and multi-culteralism trumps everything else.
I dunno.
What I do know, as a Naval Academy graduate, is that Israel must respond with overwhelming force. Negotiations and prisoner swaps will only lead to more kidnappings of Israeli solders. To show weakness to the enemy is to encourage him.
I've been to Israel several times. I love the country, the people, and their spirit. I've been to Masada; it's story inspires. The Israelis are a caring, proud people.
If anything, the Israeli's government's response so far has been restrained.
Israel should pound the savages into the ground. And that includes Iran's nuke facilities, with US assistance. Only then will the savages understand the consequences of their actions.
