Seattle Conservative Goes Bebop - You're Invited

Seattle writer Doug Anderson was raised in Everett, where his dad was mayor and U.S. Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson a family friend and lasting political influence. Anderson lives in Rainier Valley. He helps run a group home for foster children, authored a Democrats For Bush blog in '04, and continues to blog now at Sunbreak City. He's also an accomplished guitarist who plays jazz and other genres, and is performing this Saturday night July 15 from 8 to 10 p.m. with a very talented Seattle pianist named Rodger Pegues on Yesler at Cafe Vega. Kids are welcome. Doug describes the duo's repertoire and the venue thusly:

...bop jazz and our own arrangements of pop and jazz favorites....you might want to bring your kids even, as I notice a few local couples bring their(s) - the atmosphere is more coffee house than nightclub (no booze license yet), though the owner is thinking of turning the place into a late night jazz joint. But for now it is laid back and has a nice neighborhood feel...We've done three performances and the crowd keeps getting bigger and everyone says we keep getting better so.....Rodger Pegues has got to be one of the great jazz pianists on the West Coast. He has a powerful and unique talent and I believe it is only a matter of time before he blasts off and gets some kind of national reputation. I am along for the ride, an apprentice that Rodger's talent makes look good.

I've seen Doug play and have no doubt the music will be of high quality. The menu includes grilled and deli sandwiches with red meat for conservatives and Tofurkey for progressives. Get on down there if you can.

1. Thanks for the tip, Matt. (Really)

It's nice to know that in the downtime conservatives aren't actively villifying Black folks a few of you may be appreciating Jazz.

Ain't life rich?

The greatest Republican appreciator of the Black tradition, of course, was Lee Atwater (
