Initiative Signature Deadline Day
Today is the deadline for submitting signatures to qualify an initiative for the November ballot.
The AP reports on the status of various initiative efforts:
I-933, the property fairness measure will likely qualify, as will I-937, the "renewal energy" boondoggle. I-920, the death tax repeal has already turned in enough signatures. Backers of I-921, which would send some sex offenders to prison for life on a first conviction, believe it will qualify. I-946, which would require citizenship verification for recipients of certain social services, may qualify; and Tim Eyman is planning to turn in more signatures for, I-917, his "the third time is a charm" $30 car tab initiative.

1. Speaking of signatures, the Libertarian Party candidate for US Senate, Bruce Guthrie (bruceguthrie.com), received notice today from the SecState office that enough signatures were collected to put him on November's ballot. Both Cantwell and McGavick will be further expected to justify their pro-Iraq War positions with the Guthrie campaign out there.
2. Ugh. If Cantwell wins re-election, I hope the Libertarians will be super happy as this Bruce whoever he is will have made it all the more possible. After all, little miss Fraudoire has many thanks to offer to Ruth Bennett for making it close enough to let the Dems steal the election for her.
3. Its good to see I-933 make it on to the ballot.
Even though the mainstream republicans of
washington are against it. The state gop needs
to send a strong message to that crowd by
supporting this initiative.Something they and
every other republican organization in this
state have failed to do to this point in time.
(With the noteable exeception of the college
republicans of washington.)
4. Ferrous,
Bruce Guthrie is running to the left of Cantwell, and that will help McGavick. Also, we have data to show that Ruth Bennett took more votes away from Gregoire than Rossi, so you are mistaken.
5. Follow-on and expansion to Phil Spackman's comment of a few hours ago, which I fully support:
There was considerable public and private discussion at the State GOP convention last May by those of us who were delegates, regarding support for initiatives in general and I-933 in particular. As I understand it there has been a general if somewhat informal policy of not voting to endorse particular initiatives until they get enough signatures to qualify for the ballot (there are a LOT of initiatives filed every year, and only a small percentage qualify (see SOS website) )..
Given that the I-933 Property Fairness Initiative dovetails very well with the WSRP platform and policies, I was one of the delegates strongly in favor of taking an active, early stand and giving I-933 a pre-qualification endorsement. But since there were a bunch of other still-not-qualified initiatives that were also begging for attention at various vendor booths at the convention, those of us pushing I-933 decided not to make it a major issue at that time.
BUT:
Now that I-933 *is* going to be on the ballot (latest signature count I had is over 315,000, which given anything close to the usual invalid rate essentially guarantees I-933 will be on the ballot), through my county GOP leadership I am going to be asking the GOP State Committee to move quickly to formally endorse I-933. I hope my fellow Republicans on this list will do the same in THEIR counties.

Full disclosure: I was one of the Farm Bureau members who had a small part in working on the draft text of I-933 before it was filed, and I am currently Legislative Committee Chair for the Okanogan County Farm Bureau.
I was also one of the FB members who was down in Olympia yesterday, and helped carry the boxes of signatures into the main SOS office in the Capitol. We had a good day; hauled the petitions to the Capitol on a trailer behind a really old but beautifully restored John Deere tractor. Of course the socialist belivers in ever-bigger and more intrusive government were there with their anti-I-933 signs, but we had enough guys in cowboy hats and boots that they stayed (uncharacteristically) quiet. :-]
SIDEBAR: I did a VERY quick PhotoShop slide show of a selection of the pics I took of the whole petition submittal process in Oly yesterday, and published it as a single Acrobat file. If anybody wants, pop up on this thread or sent me a direct email. Low-rez file = 1.7MB; high-rez = 4.6 MB.

I just heard from Bob Baker and he has cancelled his appointment for this afternoon (the 4:00 appt for I-946). He did not get enough signatures.

7. Martin,
You sure have a lot of nerve. First and foremost, you steal somebody else's name and then have the unmitigated audacity to complain about confusion? When you're dealing with an all-volunteer group, it takes some time to record and report all contributions. You don't seem to have even mastered basic arithmetic yourself -- the numbers below add up to $2,200, not the $1,500 you state.
Please stop sending me Emails. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING you have to stay that I am intrested in hearing -- and you're a perfect example of the arrogant nutcases who keep good people from being willing to run for public office or undertake massive do-good projects like PWN. It's no secret why people hang up on you and why you have accomplished virtually nothing to stop illegal immigration, except bitch, you poor, pathetic creature.

8. Thanks fort writing,. Kathy. It is always nice to hear from you. Your email is a perfect example of one should use the DELETE button. Nothing was stolen. We formed PWN two months before you anointed Bob Baker as the head of the group that had already existed in our state for nearly two months. Take me to court, if you really believe you have a case. Bob Baker is a good man who does not know the first thing about managing an initiative. If you write -- expect to receive a response. Your email to me is an embarrassment to your cause. Hang loose. I realize you are not happy with me, but neither is anybody with you for believing that WASHINGTON needs you or PAN to meddle with our affairs. The problem is much more complex than you make it out to be. Have a great weekend, and thank you for writing. I always love to hear from you.
9. Wow. That was weird.
10. Sure is.
