City of Olympia Rejects Corporate Scorecards

Olympia City Council member T.J. Johnson recently joined protestors against Iraq-bound military vehicles loading onto cargo ships at the local port, but the council as a whole is not entirely daft. The Olympian reports today the council has rejected a proposed corporate scorecard scheme advanced by area activists, which would have (falsely) decreed the city had rights to shut down businesses who did not raise their scores above a certain level on issues such as community giving, wages, overtime pay and allowing unionization. Olympians should give thanks their often-deluded council this time had the sense to avoid feel-good symbolism that would have resulted in large legal bills for the city. The absurd ordinance, admittedly aimed at large chains such as Wal-Mart and McDonalds, was advanced by the South Sound chapter of Reclaim Democracy. Funny, I wasn't aware we had lost it to begin with.

At least these glass-five-sixths-empty poseurs didn't end up with Daryl Hannah as a mouthpiece. But maybe next time, huh?

1. This isn't funny.
See here the creeping insidious advance of Marxism.
Close down a legitimate buisness in America just because it doesn't reflect some bureaucrat's vision of social right and achieve the proper score?
What's next? Arrest the owner? His/her family too? Or maybe just to "disappear" them to use an old Soviet term?
Wake up Washington. Perhaps next time Mr Johnson and his comrades will be coming for you!

2. That corporate scorecard thing is nutty beyond belief! Refer to Stefan's earlier link to the communism commentary!

Pssss. Matt. That paranoid delusion of the right is the only reason this board exist. See the post two below yours.

4. South Sound chapter of Reclaim Democracy.

"Funny, I wasn't aware we had lost it to begin with."

I was watching the MSM this morning (I know, but I like noise in the house when getting ready for work), anyways, the Democrats are "staging" for the president's visit this morning, and the one thing that was reported was the "TAKE BACK AMERICA" slogan the dem's are using.

My question is, who took america, and where is it now? I also noted that the word, "take". They don't say "EARN Back America" it is just TAKE.

Our country is truly divided.

5. To be honest, this is kind of old news. The Council decided some time ago this was a non-starter. The news is they finally released the 37 pages documenting just how bad of an idea this really was.

However, the fact we even have numbskulls who believe their set of standards should be the measuring stick for how a business operates - lest it be boarded up and shut down - shows just how viciously desparate some leftists are to impose their vision of utopia onto others.

6. Sieg Heil!

Blown away that $10k was spent to evaluate this...I would have hung a large Soviet Flag in the Council Chambers tacked up pictures of Mao, Pol Pot, Lenin, Marx and Fidel and handed out the score cards for a trial run...then I would have had my secret police storm the room and round up part of the crowd and imprison them for an offense I deemed appropriate. Hey I run the show here and not the 3 member South Sound Commies!

Incredible....the enemy is everywhere.

This isn't Russia is it Danny?

I don’t know if anything will bring the left back to America…they may live here but they are as despotic as any stone hearted gulag master, Taliban Buddha basher, NV Army regular, North Korean Government enforcer or WEA Union organizer.

I guess the continued attempt at further implementation of leftist acid tests (things like college freshmen orientations, sexual harassment reeducation, hiring quotas are good examples of Daddy Marx policies already implemented) means that we should try and impose more freedom on America.

Iraq has homicide bombers in America we have just cowards hiding behind city councils and John Murtha’s skirt. Come on you CS leftists whip out the guns and bombs and empty the cities!!!

BTW Who in the Heck is the Consultant that got paid the $10k??…can you see that business card….Analyze Probable Communist Course Adjustments for City Improvements at $200/hour

7. Move the state capitol to Wenatchee. Get rid of the incestuous rules and regulations from Olympia's left. If in Wenatchee, at least the people would be consrvative and not want to change the world by more government.

8. But hey....at least Oly is still a "nuclear free zone!" The idiots on the City Council really don't have enough to do. Life must be good, so they need to stir something up. In the meantime, the voters just keep pulling the D lever on election day.....er, they mark their ballots before mailing them in.

Amazing stuff.

9. I see that jdb/biteme/bedwetter has crawled out from under its rock to lob another spitball at us. Sorry jdb/biteme/bedwetter, but (once again) you only managed to get it all down the front of your shirt...

10. clueless non-business breaucrats; never ran a lemonade stand; never met a payroll; it's scary; give them a little power and whoaaa! when business is choked, then rant against anyone/thing except your own legislative and business ignorance; how about this: tie keeping their jobs and half their compensation to the GROWTH stats in their districts for employment, econ development etc; you fail, you're out with little or no pay; tie pay to good independent business surveys and local performance audits;

11. Where'd they get the 10k for this study? My uneducated guess... from regulations and fees paid by local churches so they are environmentally native. I may be way off... maybe all the money from the churches just goes to the plant nurseries, not to the govt.... but churches here are being required to spend multiple thousands of dollars on native plantings. Native plants aren't cheap.
(Compare to next article on mosques.)

12. What I find really amusing is that, to the best of my knowledge, their number #1 target, Wal-Mart, doesn't even have a store in Olympia. The Wal-Mart is in Lacey, about three miles away. There is a Lowe's and Home Depot, and all the chain stores in and around the Mall, but that's about it.

13. Heartless Libertarian, my guess is the Olympia city council hopes that if they could have passed it more city councils would follow suit.
