State Chief Justice whines about opponent's legal campaign contributions

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerry Alexander is whining about the fact that his opponent, John Groen, accepted some perfectly legal campaign contributions.

"We followed the law," said Charlie Klinge, one of Groen's law partners and chairman of his fundraising committee.

But Alexander's campaign accused Groen of flouting the spirit of the new law and urged him to return the excess donations.

Sheesh. I thought judges were supposed to make judgments based on the version of a law that was passed by the legislature, not the version of the law that the judge wished had been passed by the legislature.

Chief Justice Alexander seems to have a chronic problem with that concept, which is why this would be a good opportunity to thank him for his many decades of service and wish him a long, healthy and satisfying retirement starting at the end of this term.

You can learn more about John Groen at his website and donate to his campaign at this page

1. John Groen was my guest speaker this Thursday for the Kittitas County Republican Party. He is an excellent candidate and we voted (after he left...which is required by law) to give him $250. We aren't taking it back!!! We'd send him more if we had it.

2. I wish someone could prove those expensive mailers and negative advertising doesn't work, but they do work.

Money to run a campaign puts even the best candidate beholden to many special interest groups.

I know for one thing; I will always vote for someone who interprets rather than makes laws.

3. Getting rid of Owens and Alexander would be a big step in the right direction of staving off more attacks against citizens. Neither of them is worth a d**n.

4. Stefan,

Are you going to log this blog entry with the PDC database to comply with the order of another judge who needs to go?

5. So, the text of the law goes into effect on June 7, but the "spirit" of the law goes into effect at some indeterminate point before that?

Alexander's a boob.

6. Speaking of campaign contributions, the Nutrooters are spazing out on Darcy Burner. There are all kinds of anti-Reichert, anti-Bush demonstrations planned for tomorrow. Now would be a good time to make a pro Reichert post that calls for the multitudes of pro small business, pro morality conservatives to make lots of small donations that add up to make Friday the biggest day in Reichert Fundraising history. Combined wtih the big money Bush will bring it, this would be a real statement.

7. Don't be surprised if Alexander drops out of the race at some point.
