Bold Tannins, Big Fruit, Explosive Flavors

Woodinville winemaker Mark Ryan McNeilly has released 7,264 bottles of "The Dissident," a blend of harvested red Columbia Valley grapes that, according to this reviewer, refused to conform to other uses. For only $24.95, a bottle is yours. When Western Washington's Lexus liberals quaff The Dissident with their seared duck breast in balsamic reduction, perhaps will they will toast local favorite Noam Chomsky, who explains in today's Independent "Why It's Over For America," and whose University of Washington lecture was aired on the City of Seattle's Seattle Channel. Maybe instead they'll clink glasses to radical Marxist historian Howard Zinn, who guest-lectured at Shoreline Community College, and whose cheeky Marxist apologia "Marx In Soho" was performed at the Seattle Asian Art Museum and various schools nationwide by a Harlem teacher who moonlights as a writer for the International Socialist Review. Perhaps Dissident drinkers will salute the port "militarization" resistors of the Olympia Movement For Peace and Justice, as does former Olympian Ron Jacobs in this Memorial Day essay for the magazine "Dissident Voice." Then again, why not just toast principled voting rights champion and West Seattle's own global rock star Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, who sang the song "Dissident?" If and when I can scrape up 25 smackers for what my faux-upscale neighborhood market bills as "the ultimate BBQ wine for Washington Red lovers," I think I will make clear with my toast just exactly what kind of Reds I loathe and what sort of dissidents I admire.

Were you to raise a glass of "The Dissident," to whom would you drink?

1. I toast those dissidents in Iraq who refuse to resort to killing fellow citizens as a method of restoring peace to their troubled land.
I toast the dissidents who believe that Americans are in Iraq to restore order and freedom to a land that has rarely seen it.

4. Natan Sharansky
Alexander Solzhenitsyn
and compatriots who opposed the regime from within.

Those languishing in Fidel's jails and those brave enough to speak out in Cuba.

The prisoners (read citizens) of N. Korean.

Anyone living in oppression long to be free.

And finally to the our troops who gave 50 million people in Afghanistan and Iraq the opportunity for self determination and liberty.

And for Chomsky, Zinn, Churchill, Moore et. al.?

A one way ticket to the workers paradise of N. Korea to see how they really would like the ideas they espouse practiced.

5. For a BBQ? A Three buck Chuck and a toast to free enterprise.

I find it astounding that anybody ever listened to Noam Chomsky to begin with - he's obviously either stupid or on drugs, most likely both.

Why is it whenever somebody is proclaimed to be an "intellectual", they are almost always a commie?

6. I'd hoist a cold one to the great GROUCHO Marx...
Groucho must have had Chomsky and his ilk in mind when he said:
"From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it."
Groucho Marx

"The world would not be in such a snarl........
If the KLOWNS listened to Groucho, instead of Karl!"

9. Chomsky is right about a "democracy deficit" in the U.S.- we have evidence of it right here in King County!

10. I think my toast these days would go to Bill Cosby. He has made me laugh my whole life, using truth. He is now using truth to speak to African American communities, and is paying dearly for it with liberal smears and derision.

Posted by: katomar on May 31, 2006 01:14 PM
11. I would add Chris Rock to that katomar, although he doesn't take as much heat as Cosby, I guess because he's younger and also derides Bush.

Other dissidents I would salute:

Every blog, newspaper and media that published those Danish cartoons.

Everyone who doesn't let those a-holes in who cut in line at the freeway exit.

Those people who still practice cell phone courtesy (seems like we are dissidents these days).

Everyone who doesn't think Barry Bonds records should count, and everyone who thinks Pete Rose should never get into the Hall of Fame.

Politicians, on both sides, who don't think billionaire sports owners need taxpayer subsidies.

Politicians with principles who believe those who came here illegally should not have path to citizenship that puts them ahead of people who legally come here.

Posted by: Palouse on May 31, 2006 01:56 PM
12. "Politicians with principles who believe those who came here illegally should not have path to citizenship that puts them ahead of people who legally come here."

That is so true. I was on a flight yesterday sitting next to a man from Rhodesia (as it was when he was born, and when he ran). He has been here 20 years, spent a fortune and still wrangling with the stupid paperwork to try and get citizenship. His family has roots to Africa from the 17th century, so when his citizenship comes through he will be a real African American, though I am sure he will be proud enough to want to be called American!

13. I raise my glass and toast Andzelika Formicka, my beautiful sweet friend from Poland who wanted to visit me in Seattle with all her heart.

Her visitor's visa was denied by the US Consulate in Krakow, Poland, with no reason given. The Department of State won't let Angel nor her country-men and -women into our country. Poland is not on the visa waiver program, after all they've suffered for the past two centuries, after all the help they've given us in the War on Terror.

I haven't had the heart to tell Angel that if she wants to learn Spanish and hike through the desert, she's welcome in our country (according to our wonderful politicians).

Posted by: Larry on May 31, 2006 03:30 PM
14. I’d also like to hoist a cold one in toast to every person who thinks of themselves first and foremost as an American.
I am an American:
Woman, mother, wife, daughter, sister, Caucasian, Christian, entrepreneur, conservative, poll voting, caffeine addict, and the list goes on and on.
I refuse, however, to let any of these individual characteristics define me as a whole. I am an American. A toast to each person who loves this land enough to put it ahead of victimization, political correctness, and fragmenting, isolating “diversity”.

Posted by: katomar on May 31, 2006 03:47 PM
15. Oh Larry, that's awful and unjust, isn't it? It greatly disappoints me to see politicians bending over backwards to kowtow to gate-crashers who think they are entitled to everything simply because they scammed their way into this country! And all the while your friend is completely ignored because she's trying to do things right! Something is really wrong with this picture!

16. Bush has betrayed our troops by not standing firm and supporting them when the media has been attacking them.

(what does this have to do with the topic at hand? Nothing but I know you are never going to report Bush's comments).

" President W. George Bush on Wednesday publicly expressed concern about the alleged killings of 24 Iraqi civilians by US..."

Bush is a Poor, Poor Commander in Chief. A true Commander SUPPORTS his troops. You don't condemn them before even a trial.

Well if Bush won't support our troops, then he is unworthy of support himself. And this war is unworthy of support.

19. Natan Sharansky, who knows more than I do about being a dissident, nominated President Bush.

As for which wine to serve with a barbecue, that depends entirely on what you are barbecuing, and how you are doing it. (And for some dishes, the right beer would be a better choice.)

Posted by: Jim Miller on May 31, 2006 04:06 PM
20. I'd toast whoever bought the wine, because I'm not paying $25 for a bottle of Columbia Valley red table wine. The Hedges CSM at Costco is only $8.99 and it is a very drinkable wine.

But if I were to toast someone else, it would have to be Mr. Cynical for his proud defense of all that is right with Republican America. God Bless You, Sir.

21. It all depends on who's on the bar-b-q...or who is being roasted. Liberals call for a nice fruity chardoney. Conservatives are best with a hearty cabernet sauvignon. Libertarians call for a good merlot although a straigh up beer is suitable. And anyone Green has to be alcohol free because no matter what you drink, you never get the buzz and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
More seriously, I toast those who have ensured my freedom by paying the ultimate price.

22. "More seriously, I toast those who have ensured my freedom by paying the ultimate price."

Bush has betrayed them! Bush has betrayed all servicemen living and dead for how he sounded like a liberal when asked about the Marines.

If he can't support the troops, I can't support the war. Either it is worthy to be fought or not. And if it is worthy to be fought than it can't be found in a Politically Correct Manner.

Bush isn't willing to fight the war so lets get the troops home!

23. This is what Bush said you troll...now go away.

"Those who violated the law, if they did, will be punished," Bush said Wednesday. "I am troubled by the initial news stories. I am mindful that there is a thorough investigation going on."

"Nobody is more concerned about these allegations than the Marine Corps," said Bush. "The Marine Corps is full of men and women who are honourable people, who understand rules of war."

Posted by: Palouse on May 31, 2006 06:03 PM
24. More opportunistic Bush Bashers! Surprise, surprise. There is just one real life fact that most of these trolls refuse to face. Our military are warriors. They are trained killers, and that's how it should be. I am thankful every day that they do what they do, although it is at a greater cost to them than any of us realize. Liberals would have them be polite, 'Feeeeeling' people on the battlefield. That doesn't win battles. They are trained to kill, and sometimes, when they are being attacked, some of the more "civilized response" training that liberals love may slip. If that's what happened, then it needs to be examined and corrected. However, we don't know exactly what happened, and so President Bush's response was entirely appropriate. Strikes me as funny that on this one, Bush is being criticized for both blindly defending the Marines, and for letting them down. Which is it, guys? Why don't we all wait for the facts to come out and then make judgments?

Posted by: katomar on May 31, 2006 07:18 PM
25. Being a Marine, I would love to blindly support these Devil Dogs and if there is any shred of evidence that they were attacked or that they retaliated against an attack, I am for them 100%.

That being said, if they really did just go and mow down Iraqi civilians, they deserve much, much worse than a DD and a jail sentence for what they have done. What they have done for our Iraqi effeort, our country's image, and most importantly to me, the image of the US Marine Corps.

An overwhelming majority of US Marines are honorable men and women who are members of a brotherhood with roots older than the Republic. That beings said, from time to time we are reminded that Marines are human and therefore have the failings of man. While we have accomplished legendary feats unparalleled in the annals of war, we too have had our moments of failure. I hope that this is not one, but I must admit that there is a possibility that these men, frustrated with continual bombings by a cowardly enemy who does not know the meaning of stand-up fight, snapped and unleashed the fury of a Marine Infantry squad on the wrong targets.

26. Bush has CLEARLY LET DOWN our troops.

He could have said exactly what you just did katomar.

But, no, instead he sided with the liberal media.

There shouldn\'t EVEN BE an investigation. Bush has the power to stop such an investigation.

Bush should have asked the media why they are so eager to think the worst of our military. Put the Press on the Defensive.

That is what a leader would do.

\"Those who violated the law, if they did, will be punished,\" Bush said Wednesday. \"I am troubled by the initial news stories. I am mindful that there is a thorough investigation going on.\"

\"Nobody is more concerned about these allegations than the Marine Corps,\" said Bush. \"The Marine Corps is full of men and women who are honorable people, who understand rules of war.\"

That is a TERRIBLE STATEMENT, Palouse. It\'s like Bush has already convicted these people before trial.

I hear that because of this \"incident\" we are now giving our troops more senstivity training. The moment I heard that I knew - the war is over, we lost.

Can\'t win a PC war. Never could. I thought Bush knew that, but I was wrong.

I have to give the Devil his due. When Clinton fought Serbia, he knew how to fight a war. And he didn\'t let little babies or even the Chinese diplomats get in his way. They were all his targets.

We shouldn\'t have gone in to Serbia, but at least when we did we fought that war as one is supposed to fight wars.

27. Aaron even though the President has betrayed our troops, I never will.

These troops need to be supported for what they did.

We ask so much from them, don't they deserve this in return?

In a war zone soldiers should never be tried for stuff like this. At worst give them bed rest or medical supervision for a while.

For Bush to not support our troops makes me extremely angry. He is a coward through and through.

The reason we lost Iraq is not due to the man on the ground but because of our leaders back home. It really was just another Vietnam.

Without this marvelous document nothing that we have would be imaginable, not even the delusional rantings of degenerates like "Not Republican" and "Support Troops" (whom I suspect are the same moron).

The act of dissent is a part of our heritage and largely taken for granted. It is abused by those who haven't even begun to earn it, and possible only because of the men and women who shed their blood to defend it.

It is a shame to waste such a precious gift on scumbags like these two..

32. Aaron, indeed thank you and all your fellow Marines for your service to our country.

But, please as much as I appreciate it, please stop it. We don't deserve your service. We are so unworthy of it.

Bush will not support you. Half of America will not support you. Stop doing the right thing by serving our country. It is time for "flyover country" to stop propping the rest of us up. Let the so called "Best and Brightest" take the load for a while.

Look, in three years from now Hillary will probably be in the White House. Do you want to serve under her? And again, Bush doesn't even support you. So if you are in, get out as soon as possible. If you are not in, don't join.

Let's see how they like it when they don't have the Heartland and have to rely on their people for our nation's defense. As much as I appreciate your patiotism it is time for you to focus on your family.

Things are going to have to fall apart a little more before things get better. So, please let it happen. It is not worth going to jail over. I am so tired of seeing good people go to jail for merely doing their job.

Posted by: Not Republican on June 1, 2006 08:28 AM
33. We need people like the Marines at home fighting this "different kind of 'war'" in other ways. As youth pastors, as community leaders, etc. We can't afford losing them by them ending up dead in Iraq or in jail.

The Iraq War is over. We lost. You didn't lose. You did your job. WE lost it. So, stop serving in the military for there are so many other ways you can serve to "win the war at home". For only AFTER we win the "war at home" will this country be worth fighting and dying for again. You can't protect a country that "doesn't have your back."

Posted by: Not Republican on June 1, 2006 08:37 AM
34. Or better yet...NR, how about you go run a nice warm bath, have yourself a good stiff drink, and then do us all a favor and slit your wrists. You know it's the only solution. We don't deserve someone as sensitive as you...

So, please let it happen...

Posted by: alphabet soup on June 1, 2006 08:40 AM
35. Oh, hey, NR, that's rich. You guys have spent untold energy in keeping our military out of schools, and now you want them to counsel youth? Make up your mind. I think you have just showcased something very important. You want to let things just fall apart while convservatives work to correct the problems. None of us could have said that better than you just did.

Posted by: katomar on June 1, 2006 08:52 AM
36. Don't you dare call me sensitive!

I respect the Military and understand what they need to do.

Bush doesn't. Half of the Country Doesn't.

So, until we become a country again worth fighting for I am not willing to sacifice good people. If people stop joining the military and the military starts to fall apart perhaps the power stucture in America will start appreciating them again.

The sad fact is that things have to get a little worst in this country before they start to get better. With Good people propping this country up the leadership doesn't get to suffer the full consequences of their actions. It is time for good people to stand back a bit so that the rest of us can get a cold hard dose of reality. Only then can they come back to a country who would be lots more appreciative.

You want to see "sensitive?"

http://www.mnf-iraq.com/Releases/2006-06/060601c.htm

To reinforce and sustain training servicemembers received prior to their deployment to Iraq, the Commander, Multi-National Corps - Iraq has directed his subordinate commanders to conduct core warrior values training, highlighting the importance of adhering to legal, moral and ethical standards on the battlefield.

For them to put the words "Moral" "Ethnical" and "Battlefield" in the same sentence proves that our current military leadership doesn't understand the nature of war.

Please contrast with this.

http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/sherman/sherman-to-burn-atlanta.html

"War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it"

And unless we understand that then we can not win any war, including this one.

Here is how you win a war!

http://www.turtletrader.com/speech.mp3

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/MovieSpeeches/moviespeechpatton3rdarmyaddress.html

Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. Men, all this stuff you've heard about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love to fight. All real Americans, love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball players, the toughest boxers ... Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in Hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans....

... My God, I actually pity those poor bastards we're going up against. My God, I do. We're not just going to shoot the bastards, we're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun bastards by the bushel.

38. If You want to win a war you have to do it the "Chicago Way".

Malone: You said you wanted to get Capone. Do you really wanna get him? You see what I'm saying is, what are you prepared to do? Eliot Ness: Anything and everything in my power. Malone: And THEN what are you prepared to do? If you open the can on these worms you must be prepared to go all the way because they're not gonna give up the fight until one of you is dead. Eliot Ness: How do you do it then? Malone: You wanna know how you do it? Here's how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way, and that's how you get Capone! Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that? Eliot Ness: I have sworn to capture this man with all legal powers at my disposal and I will do so. Malone: Well the Lord hates a coward. Do you know what a blood oath is Mr. Ness? Eliot Ness: Yes. Malone: Good, cause you just took one.

Just be thankful our Commander in Chief is "W" and not Gore, or Kerry, or Hillary. We all knew it would be a long haul going in, and if the press and the liberals would stop actively sabotaging everything the President and our military do, progress would be evident a lot quicker. As it is, we are never shown any of the progress, only the perceived negatives. And it's all only because the Democrats want to be back in power. They don't give a rat's arse about the country. They simply lust after the power, at any cost.
