"Witnessed" Ballot Update

Read my earlier post from this evening, "Mail Ballot Horror Show (VI): "Witnessed" ballots " for context and then come back and see this example that Bob Edelman just e-mailed me: copies of two mail ballots cast in Pierce County in November 2004 under two different registrations with the name Thaddeus Gaddy (same address, born on the same date, one in 1921, the other in 1922). One of the ballots appears to have been signed by the voter, the other ballot was "witnessed" on the pretext that the voter is unable to sign his name. Edelman's comments follow in the extended entry.

No-excuses absentee voting is bad enough, but If we're all forced to vote by mail we might as well dispense with the pretense of elections as we know them and admit that they're little more than contests to stuff the ballot boxes with the likes of votes from mailbox residents and out-of-state friends and witnessed ballots. Any public official who tries to tell you that the current regime of voting by mail is a secure and legitimate way to choose our government deserves to be tarred and feathered.

Edelman: The attached illustrates a major problem with our absentee ballot laws. Two Thaddeus Gaddys are registered at the same Tacoma address. They share the same birthday but the years of birth are 1921 and 1922. Both cast ballots in the 2004 General Election. One signed his envelope but the older Thaddeus was unable to sign so he marked an 'X' that was witnessed by two people.

Our laws do not require witnesses to identify themselves so it is next to impossible to locate them from just their signatures. Even if they could be found, the act of witnessing gives no validity to the voter's identity -- all they need witness is that someone put an 'X' on the ballot envelope.

Here is a multiple choice quiz. Pick one of the following:

  1. The two Thaddeus Gaddy’s are brothers, coincidently born exactly one year apart (the “George Foreman” syndrome). The younger Thaddeus registered in 1968 but the older didn’t register until 2004. He is disabled or illiterate.
  2. There is only one Thaddeus Gaddy. He changed his registration in 2004 to correct the year of birth but the auditor gave him a second registration instead. (Auditors try to err on the side of inclusion – thus we had tens of thousands of duplicate registrations.) He had an injury so he couldn’t sign his ballot on October 18th. Nine days later he recovered but he forgot that that he had already voted so he voted the second ballot.
  3. Same as (b) except that Thaddeus deliberately voted twice, knowing that nobody has ever been prosecuted for it in our state.
  4. Same as (b) except that Thaddeus mistakenly voted twice, thinking that he is supposed to if he gets two ballots.
  5. Thaddeus’ wife (or daughter or sister), Maria, was last credited with voting in 1999. She is unable to sign her name and voted Thaddeus’ second ballot by mistake. The witnesses thought that her name was Thaddeus.
  6. Thaddeus gave his extra ballot to his PCO. The PCO told two ladies that he was Thaddeus and got them to witness his “X”.
  7. Same as (f) except that the real Thaddeus signed with an “X” and the PCO forged the signature. (He didn’t want any witnesses.)
  8. None of the above

How many other ballots were returned without signatures but accepted because two unidentifiable people signed as witnesses?

1. Yeah, maybe we should just have Dean Logan put the ballot in a PDF on the web. One could print out as many copies as one wants and vote as often as one likes, just like American Idol. There would be computer generated ballots for any given candidate as a way of "speed voting." And the Mainstream Seattle Media could act like Randy, Paula and Simon and make biased comments that would sway voters towards a particular candidate and participate in the general charade.

Oh Wait ...

The system is already this way. The "Democrat Producers" get to walk away with all of our tax dollars and pimp their Candidate Idols after each election season.

We simply need to rename the current system to reflect it's lack of integrity and seriousness and point out that it is strictly for entertainment. Instead of KCREALS, it should be renamed:

Democrat Idol

2. Mail ballot horror show, alright. Where is the outrage from public officials?? All-mail balloting will guarantee that a republican will NEVER EVER win a close race again because they will fake enough votes out and within to fix everything. This is outrageous!

3. This ought to be worth more than a few laughs!!!

"Seattle's liberal, never-bashful Rep. Jim McDermott has found temporary work that, like his day job, consists largely of saying what he thinks.

The nine-term Democratic Lunatic will fill in as host of "The Dave Ross Show" on 710 KIRO Radio next week while Ross -- himself an unsuccessful Democratic congressional candidate two years ago -- goes on vacation."

McDimwit is an odds-on favorite to set a world record for times stepping on his dick during a radio show.

4. Mr.Y.K.Raja,
"before it is too late to stop a fraud boom."
You are missing the point. These are Democrats of the Mayor Daly stripe. They want every possible way of commiting voter fraud to be not only available but used to there fullest extent.

5. I couldn't wade through Mr. Y.K. Raja's post but I am interested in the topic. I understand that there is supposed to be an objective way to match the signatures. How does it work? Is there some way to calibrate it?

Poll voting is safer and better. The forced mail voting is a sham and a shame.

6. Mr. C, McDermott hosting the Dave Ross show? Isn't that an in kind contribution toward his re-election campaign?

7. I really wish we could stop addressing this as a liberal/conservative or democrat/republican issue. I'm an activist GOP precinct committee officer but it should be every bit as important to an honest Democrat that elections be held honestly. Otherwise what we finally end up with isn't government dominated by Republicans or Demorcrats. It will be dominated by people with no respect for the will of the people. Do any of us want that?

8. When do we get legal action on this????

9. "Honest Democrat"??? Now, that's an oxymoron!

Since I live in Seattle, most of my friends vote for the dark side and are actually good people, even if they are clueless about the issues. But quite frankly, because of the control the media has over what the public sees, most don't realize how critical this issue is. The press has once again failed to inform the public as to what is really going on with the King County Elections Department, so most people don't understand what a huge mistake all mail voting would be. Golly, you don't think the bias of the local press has anything to do with the unions or "I've never lived in the real world" journalists?

10. Is the media so un-balanced that there is NO dissent or opposing arguments against all-mail voting presented? I used to be on the fence about it, but now I am unwilling to accept it as the SOLE option available for voting.
The Seattle media are like a big echo chamber--their masters bark, and they repeat it.

11. Stefan---
Can someone possibly do a public records request asking for copies of all WITNESSED BALLOTS?????
That would keep DeanRon & his staff busy sifting thru every single absentee ballot.
It doesn't hurt to ask!
Besides, your request is very specific. He can't use the lame-ass excuse that your request is somehow not specific enough.

12. //but now I am unwilling to accept it as the SOLE option available for voting.//

Without some sort of meaningful security, absentee ballots are an open invitation to fraud. In the days when most votes were cast in polling places, the limited number of absentee ballots limited the amount of mischief. But going to 100% mail-in balloting would throw the door wide open.

13. Thanks so much!

I've been so frustrated with the way government works and want desperately to do more.

Thanks for showing me how I can vote more often without going to jail. I'll get on it first thing Tuesday Morning. Please, please, please tell me it's not to late to register and register and register for the primary...

I love the internet. It's so informative.

14. Thanks for showing me how I can vote more often without going to jail.

You must have missed the Washington State Democrats memo on this. They are the experts!

15. What typically follows after the enslavement or attempted enslavement of a people?

As usual the tyrannists are short sighted.

16. Jail,

It's not too late to register and register and register for the primary.
Read the Seattle Times and go to the King County Elections website for more information on
how to be a corrupt petty criminal Democrat. They are teaching lessons daily, but they are really not necessary.
As a Democrat, you know that liberal pettiness and criminality come naturally to you.

17. yea, we all have a right to vote, but any clown making an 'x' on a ballot to raise my local taxes or regulate my life even more is scary in itself; a felony, year in jail and $10k fine for false voter witnesses could make their eyepatches pop off quickly; that is, if we ever get that fairy tale voting law enforcement we all dream about;
