Your State Auditor at work

State Auditor Brian Sonntag and his team have been busy.

The AP just reported the results of an audit of L&I:

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The state Department of Labor and Industries paid more than $600,000 in pension benefits to dead or otherwise ineligible claimants in the last fiscal year and lost more than $180,000 in equipment, including laptops, digital records and camcorders, according to a state audit released Friday.
Also released today is the Auditor's report on the state Dept. of General Administration
In most areas, the Department complied with state laws and regulations and its own policies and procedures. However, we identified a condition significant enough to report as a finding:
• The Department did not have adequate internal controls in place to ensure gasoline purchased is for authorized purposes.
One vehicle supposedly received a tank fill-up of 40.7 gallons when the tank capacity is only 33 gallons.

1. I guess "Lawnmower Man" is alive and well in State Government! Did the Auditor ask why the employee was mowing their own lawn when the State is sponsoring soo many Illegal Aliens that really need the the work?

2. For an 8 hour service route on a 1 ton truck, the cost of L&I for my driver is double that of my fuel cost.

Posted by: Andy on May 5, 2006 04:20 PM
3. That's vice versa...50% of what my fuel cost is. This still a huge waste for a small business.

Fuel however gets the truck from to pts a, b, c, d. L&I is just useless overhead.

Stop talking about jacking minimum wage and start talking about the waste of money at L&I. This is over 20% of an employee's salary in many cases.

Does washington even allow employers to use private insurance over L&I? For some reason I thought Washington's is Stalin-istic and you have to use the state program over pvt insurance.

5. You have to be kidding this is a state employee they would never steal from the tax payer. It is only human error. they got the numbers turned around. It was a 40.7 gallon tank that got 33 gallons of gas. No honest State Employee would defraud the tax payer. They are honest hardworking people. You are picking on these people. The State Auditor must be a racist making statements like this about the hard working union workers. No he is trying to break the Union. How dare he. We don't need any controls we are for the people. Trust us. We are the only people who care about the poor. Brian is such an evil person being against us helping the hard working public. The dead need their money too. How are they going to pay for their graves and keep the grass cut. They are handicapped. And can no longer keep the grass cut and plant flowers. The money was to help them with their handicap. Brian must be against the handicap.

6. Just more of the fraud, corruption, deceit, ineptitude & padded work hours that we find with state employees. And, somehow or other, they never seem to lose their jobs over such trifles.

The all-powerful state employees union compels the state to retain these incompetents until they want to leave or until they are bumped upstairs to a more cushy job.

I am just so sick and tired of this kind of garbage. Any employee who defrauds the state should be out on their ear within hours with no references, no tenure, no benefits.

7. Watch for a couple of nobody's to get fired or suspended every time one of these audits comes out. Or an investigation to be conducted "in earnest." If that. Then watch for Brian Sonntag to be accused of going on a "witch hunt" in the People's Republic of Washington every time he launches an audit.

I wonder, with all of that lost equipment, how many paychecks will get docked. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they at least make people sign for the equipment in their offices. Things like laptops don't disappear on their own, so how many people will be held accountable for the stuff that's "missing" from their place?

What kills me is that some of my friends in the National Guard out of Buckley can't even get their guys to the right training before going to the desert because the state tells them there is no money to put them on active status. For those who don't know, that doesn't even include any travel or per diem, just base pay. The state can't afford to pay the NG their salary! And Fraudiore does a commercial about "honoring Washington's veterans." What a crock of sh!t she is. I really, truly can't wait for her to just go away.

8. WOW!! Will Christine Gregoire crack the whip and get this bureaucratic mess straightened out???? A private business could not operate like this and last long. Where is the outrage from public officials???

I want my money back!!!!

9. This will not result in anyone getting fired. anybody riding around in State vehicles is probably in the union and there is no way that Chrissy will be going after the brothers down at the local.

I wouldn't be suprised if she writes in a gas benenfit into the next contract to keep this from being and issue in the future. Now multiply this finding by every Federal,County and City agency with a motor pool. Have gas card, will travel. What a country!

10. Just another day in government. Business as usual. More fuel than the tank you say? That's normal. Dean Logan found more votes than voters.

11. Sontaag is a great public servant ! Too bad they can't do a corruption audit on King County Records & Elections. If only they could equate corruption with $ !

The only way to get the Gov. to do anything is expose it to the light of a performance audit - a good thing. If you think L & I was bad, wait until they get done with uncovering the waste at DSHS !

12. KS:
Why can't they do an audit on King County Records & Elections? I thought these were also "performance audits".?

13. The real rip off is the constant proliferation of management jobs while cutting front line workers.
Every agancy does this. Every one. Doesn't matter which party is calling the shots.

As for the gas, many GA employees are involoved in work that requires the use of portable power equipment. Before the Ripofflicans barbeque the front line workers again, check to see the actual function of the vehicle and it's operator.

What this State needs is legislation limiting the percentage of agency budgets that can be spent on mamagement salaries. It'll never get through the legislature because both parties use the cronie system to rule their underlings in state Government.

If you think a few gallons of gas is a problem, just wait unitl contractors take over building maintanance, repairs, and operations. The State had better start priting change order forms now, because eveything beyond the maintenance contract will be a change order.

As the Re[puiblican contractors lick their chops...

14. IV;

When in last two Decades in the State of Washington has a different party called the shots. I recall this Governor saying she was going to eliminate "1,000 mid-level managers" form state government. Has she done it? the nice thing about outside contractors, no matter which party you ascribe their polictical leanings to, is that you can fire them if they do not do the job. Unlike state union employees.

If the auditors office is so stupid as to not recognize the job desciption and equipment allocation of the individuals cited in the "findings" then perhaps we need a new auditor.

Bottom line is that after repeated "findings" in audits nothing is done to correct the actions. If the people in charge of enforcing fiscal discipline never have a consequence for not doing their job, nothing will change. Millions of dollars will be wasted or stolen each year.
Let's see if our Decades old Democratic controlled state government will aggressively clean out the thieves and cheats.

Why create a new set of rules, controls or guidelines if the employees and management refuse to follow the ones now in place? All you will be doing is adding more State Employees to staff oversight. A net loss to the taxpayers, again.

15. Gosh, I wonder what makes me think Independent Voter works for the GA? Tell me, I.D., does your state leaf blower take 40 gallons?

16. L&I Premiums Paid by Employers (including the Med. Aid and Supplemental Pension portions often withheld from employees paychecks) ARE TRUST FUNDS!!!!
Because they are actually TRUST FUNDS, they are held to a much higher standard of accountability. The consequences of this misuse & abuse of TRUST FUNDS by government officials ought to be investigated. Perhaps these abusers can also be PROSECUTED and convicted of FELONIES...and be forced to make restitution!

Perhaps this is why the Dems want felons to vote??!! There are plenty of potential felons working in government.....but they need them to vote so they can continue to steal from us whorkin' stiffs!

17. Thank you Brian Sontag for finding this. We should reward the folks on the other side of the aisle with positive affirmation when they do something right.

Posted by: Reporterward on May 6, 2006 02:45 PM
18. I second Reporterward's comments. I would say we should also let positive affirmation take the shape of our votes, but lately that doesn't seem to count for much, at least until a thorough state audit is done on KCRE. Or until Stefan's audit catches the attention of the feds, because our local law men sure don't want to touch it!

Posted by: katomar on May 6, 2006 03:33 PM
19. Just like a true Ripofflican, you crucify the messenger. I am a technical person, licensed in my field by both the State and the Feds. The only difference in party politics is which bunch of cronies guards the henhouse. Just limit the amount of money to be spent on manager salaries.
But like I said earlier, that will go noplace fast in Washington, regardless of which party controls the Legislature or the Governor's mansion.

The Republicans would stack the offices with 80 to 100 K managers just as much as Homocrats do.

The working class has only the choice of which direction to be screwed from.

20. Independent:
Crucify? Homocrats? Ripofflicans? Watch those stones. They tend to come back at ya.

Posted by: katomar on May 6, 2006 09:44 PM
21. Now do you see why the state government so opposed independent audits?
