TNT: Gregoire Should Demand Accountability On "Diversity" Calendar Gaffe

"Diversity" is right up there with personal technology as a platform for poor judgement, and the Tacoma News Tribune editorializes that the Washington State Department of Corrections erred badly in issuing to employees a "diversity" calendar which in the name of "provoking thought" highlighted as noteworthy the birthdates of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Karl Marx, Ho Chi Minh, and Isoroku Yamomoto, who led the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

A DOC spokesperson defending the calendar notes that it is an instructional tool that "just lists people who had an impact on the world" and was meant to "provoke thought." What a lame explanation. What exactly is magician Doug Henning's (May 3) impact on the world? What thoughts are provoked by songstress Sheena Easton (April 27), other than that she was smokin' as Sonny Crockett's wife on "Miami Vice" and that her hairdo spoke volumes about everything that was wrong with the '80s? What aspect of "diversity" is highlighted by including the birthdays of Audrey Hepburn (painfully thin women?), Peter the Great (unusually tall czars?) and Eva Peron (overambitious actresses?).

It’s commendable for the DOC to celebrate diversity, but this calendar falls far short. If it's too hard to find legitimate examples of diversity, then the department should come up with a different theme. How about "notorious names in history"? Ho and Yamamoto would fit right in. What the department really needs to do is admit it screwed up - and identify just who signed off on this clueless project.

So let's see. The department head reports to Mrs. Gregoire. Who is all about accountability, right?

UPDATE: The Yakima Herald-Republic, which has left the Seattle dailies in the dust on this story, has a story today that reveals the Gregoire administration is floundering badly here. WA Corrections Sec. Harold Clarke has now put in writing that future versions of the calendar will bear a disclaimer. It will say that notables therein are not being honored or celebrated, but "are listed to represent diversity in many ways." Well, yes, Harold, there certainly is much diversity among murderous despots and socialists. But does pointing that out actually strengthen the case for diversity? Why are you trying so hard, pal? Lemme see. Is there a performance bonus for state department heads and managers who implement "diversity" initiatives? If so, Harold, you may want to have your point man on the project complement the inclusion of Lenin and Ho Chi Minh by adding the birthdates of Idi Amin and Saddam Hussein, as well. I may have missed it, but I didn't see any mass-killing African or Middle Eastern national potentates on the calendar.

1. Someone in the DOC doesn't have enough work to do.

2. Accountability and Ms. Gregforhire...add that to your lists of oxymorons!!!

3. Amen, brother Phlash.

Remember that before she became Queen, she was Princess Chris, AG. When her office missed a filing deadline that cost the state millions of dollars, how did the princess respond? By taking responsibility? Don't be silly, that would mean admitting to a mistake and being accountable.

Like any other spineless loser she blamed a woman on her staff who had medical problems. That lady sued, and was awarded over a million dollars in damages from the state treasury.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that our tax dollars are being wasted, queenie has a history of wasting taxpayer dollars. And accountability? Ha!

4. 1 Typical bureaucratic respose when some screws up
2 After twelve (12) years of mismanagement in the Attorney General's office, what do you expect as governor?
3 If WSRP was serious they would have a website that exposes Christine Gregoire's daily fumbles, just like KCGOP has one for Ron Sims
BTW No one in the Department of Corrections is going to be held responsible for this snafu

5. Green Lake Mark - Of course someone will be held accountable. The DOC employee who hit "reply to all" to complain about the calandar (which action brought this whole thing to the publics attention) will be disciplined.

6. Kudos to the News Tribune for remembering that Sheena Easton was briefly Sonny Crockett's songstress wife on "Miami Vice." They killed her off quickly, though, because they couldn't weigh Don Johnson and the series down week after week with Sheena Easton, who couldn't act. Not that that's important. I just enjoyed the reference.

7. Accountability when you are a Dem - 'The officers involved in the accident were instructed by an official "above the rank of patrolman" to take Kennedy home and no sobriety tests were conducted at the scene, Cannon said.'

8. I wonder why they feel the need to go outside the criminal justice system to find representatives for diversity.

How about "June is Child Molester month".
"July is Drunk Driver month".
"August is attempthed manslaughter month".

Then they could highlight local prisoners in the calendar.

That would be diverse, wouldn't it?

9. So he wants diversity,so why not have a PROTEST FOR THE UNATHORIZED BANK WITHDRAWER,unathorized sex act provider, and al the other unauthorized people .he could use the unathorized bordser crossers and have a big bar b que rofl

10. This post should tell you the extent of how apathy runs rampant in the Governor's office and Olympia ! No wonder there have been record low voter turnouts in recent years.

Incompetence of Gregforhire as AG and now as Governor is a symptom of her apathy...

11. I'm wondering how they came up with the calendar. I can just envision a team of researchers coming up with the commemorative dates. And then a special committee formed to vote on the finalists for the calendar. And then the team to put together the bid process for printers and so forth. Wonder how much it all cost???? Our tax dollars at work.
