Whoopemup Hollow

Totally not political and a bit off the path of our normal Puget Sound-related beat, but I just have to put in a plug for the Whoopemup Hollow cajun restaurant in Waitsburg (pop. 1,224).

My wife and I were touring Walla Walla the weekend before Easter. We were surprised at how charming and busy that small city was, and even more surprised when a local antiques dealer recommended we drive twenty minutes north to Waitsburg to get dinner. But we weren't disappointed: the Whoopemup's jumbalaya was wonderful, and my wife enjoyed her pork. We'd definitely go back next time we are in southeast Washington.

Apparently, we weren't the only ones that had heard of it. Sunset magazine just did a write up, and there was a full house on the night we visited.

The restaurant doesn't have a website, so here's how to find them:

1. OK, I'll "bite."

We could use a few more good cajun restaurants in this area. I've been to Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen several times. Unfortunately the closest one is in Colorado. But if I'm ever in a town where one is close by I always make a point of dining there at least one night.

2. There's one in Parkland called From The Bayou. It's right near PLU, though I saw it was for sale in a Real Estate periodical so I'm not sure if they're still open. The food was so-so but what sent us to the point of no return was the snotty service from the PLU college kids. Like they were doing me a favor by microwaving my cold french fries. I'm sure for every guy like me there's two who've had a great time, but thin, bland gumbo and cold fries for almost $30 between my wife and I is too much for a second chance. Hopefully the new owners will give a rip about their customers. From the atmospere of the place you could tell the kids had no fear for their jobs at all.

3. There is the Celtic Bayou in Redmond. It is quite good and has a great selection of beer to go with it. It is right by the West-bound on ramp to 520 from Bel-Red road.
