1. well hey--maybe she can work herself all the way up to 81 next year!

2. Did Ted Kennedy float to the top again? Someone get a stick!

3. I suspect that those votes of approval may be as accurate as the original online votes for the Washington Quarter...
But seriously, even without any real context or way to tell how meaningful the poll really is, it was interesting to see the "dissatisfied" votes. I bet that those particular votes, if the source was Washington voters, were mostly from people who feel (think?) that our Democrat Senators are not left-wing enough.

4. Oh I suppose Psuedo,... but Stefans headline cracked me up! Thanks Stefan!

5. 82 is a very honorable number... if you're a paratrooper, which I think she is not.

6. Ha! It's nice to see that Teddy is down in the lower 50th percentile fighting it out for popularity with both California 'has-been' Senators!

7. Given SurveyUSA's past track record, I think a more accurate headline would be "Maria Cantwell the 82nd most popular Senator, with a margin of error of +/- 81 spaces." Their methodology is to use recorded messages where users push buttons on their phones to answer questions, and because they use very concise questions with no follow ups their results often reflect the completely wrong answer. They had most of Arnold's California ballot measures winning last year, for example, and they also somehow determined that there were only approximately 8m people who still supported Bush in the US in a more recent poll.

Probably a better way to use SurveyUSA polls is to have them determine which press organization is desperate enough to prove a point by using them. Paul Krugman has cited them when it has suited his purposes, for example. I'd be willing to bet the PI or Times will pull one out at one point or another when they're too lazy to do their own more rigorous polling.

8. 1 The results are interesting but they do not indicate the source
2 Rather surprised that Ted Stevens R-AK is ranked #12 based upon the negative fallout he's received about his projects favoring Alaska
3 Does Zogby compile something like this?

9. Congrats to the republican smear mongers. Your spiteful, negative attacks stick among survey takers. You should be proud.

10. What a sad day for Maria Cantwell that she is surpassed in popularity by Patty Muray, considered by surveys the dumbest senator in the whole group. Oh, well. I guess Washington State should be proud!

11. Box of Rocks Murray gets 53%???????

I guess she reflects the intelligence of a majority of voters. ID keeps looking better and better.

12. I agree with you Psueduotsuga - usually someone earns the animus of their constituents, but cant~do~well hasn't done anything during her vacation trip to Congress.

Most people can't even identify her.

That said, toilet-drinkers like molto-meal will vote for her for no other reason than that she is a democrap. Way to go molto-meal!

13. If you go to the following details on the USA Survey

http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReport.aspx?g=2a7934ef-7746-46f1-9656-81282fc28c3a

and look closely, there are a few interesting things to consider.

In benchmarking Maria Can't-vote-well against Osma-mama Murray (who gets a much higher rating) a couple of things jump out.

Among "blacks" Maria has a much lower "approval" rating and a much higher "not sure". This may be a fall out from the revelations revealed in the primary against Ron Sims, where it was learned that Maria had been part of a soriety that actively excluded blacks and a locally famous young black woman, at that. Jameson's did an article in the PI that focused on the aligation and he added first person anguish to this story.

Next if you look at females and under 55 years of age, Maria looks weak compared to Murray.

Finally if you look at those who consider themselves Democrats and Liberals, Maria is weak.

Now let's push this information forward into the coming senate campaign a little. Maria will need to win some how figure out how to get the votes of blacks, women, those under age 55, party faithful democrats, and liberals.

Her opponent on the other hand, if he can get votes from these groups may be able to win at the polls (assuming DEANRON doesn't put in the fix again).

The primary campaign could get real interesting, especially since we know that some "ultra-liberal and black candidates will be in the primary. If they put before the voters enough negatives on Maria Can't-Vote-well to the black community, to the ultra-liberal community of those voting for a Democatic party senate primary contender, then the Republicans, may have a good chance in the real election.

Maria's problem will be to try to live down her racist soriety past, her skinny rich white privaledged bitch, and her friend of big-business image among the democratic party faithful.

14. Bob: "Maria's problem will be to try to live down her racist soriety past"

What's this? I seem to recall talk about something like this in the past, but wasn't that when we were talking about the Rossi - Gregoire race? Wasn't that an attack on Gregoire?

I think you're mixing up the candidates.

"Maria's problem will be to try to live down ..., her skinny rich white privaledged bitch"

Are you talking about her dog, or is this an insult that she's suppose to live down?

I can see what you're saying in the rest of you comments, but I would be careful about equating a democrat's disapproval of Cantwell to a November vote against her. McGavick is going to have a tough sell to that constituency, and coseying up with Ted Stevens and oil businesses in Alaska isn't winning him any browny points I'm afraid.

HISPANIC LEADERS SPEAK OUT!

Augustin Cebada, Brown Berets; "Go back to Boston! Go back to Plymouth Rock, Pilgrims! Get out! We are the future. You are old and tired. Go on. We have beaten you. Leave like beaten rats. You old white people. It is your duty to die . . . Through love of having children, we are going to take over.

Richard Alatorre, Los Angeles City Council. "They're afraid we're going to take over the governmental institutions and other institutions. They're right. We will take them over . . . We are here to stay."

Excelsior, the national newspaper of Mexico, "The American Southwest seems to be slowly returning to the jurisdiction of Mexico without firing a single shot."

Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, University of Texas; "We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population . . . I love it. They are shitting in their pants with fear. I love it."

Art Torres, Chairman of the California Democratic Party, "Remember 187--proposition to deny taxpayer funds for services to non-citizens--was the last gasp of white America in California."

Gloria Molina, Los Angeles County Supervisor, "We are politicizing every single one of these new citizens that are becoming citizens of this country . . . I gotta tell you that a lot of people are saying, "I'm going

Mario Obledo, California Coalition of Hispanic Organizations and California State Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Governor Jerry Brown, also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton, "California is going to be a Hispanic state. Anyone who doesn't like it should leave."

Jose Pescador Osuna, Mexican Consul General , "We are practicing 'La Reconquista' in California."

Professor Fernando Guerra, Loyola Marymount University; "We need to avoid a white backlash by using codes understood by Latinos . . . "

Are these just the words of a few extremists? Consider that we could fill up many pages with such quotes. Also, consider that these are mainstream Mexican leaders.

18.
TomMolto (or whatever he calls himself) cracks me up with his rant about Cantwells popularity being based on "republican slander."

What positive thing has Cantwell done that would make her popular? She isn't a leader in her own party. She hasn't done anything positive or championed any major cause. She isn't a very good speaker, doesn't seem to inspire others to follow her or co-operate.

In fact, the only thing I can remember her doing at all is stopping drilling in Alaska, and truth be known most American's don't give a damn about a frozen piece of ground none of us will ever see and caribou dont vote.

When I hear about the a-hole down in Venezuala and the even bigger jerks in the middle east and think about how my gas money is going to them when we could be getting millions of gallons from our own country, I'm not thankful to Maria for insuring our dependence on foreign oil.

"Do Nothing Cantwell" doesn't need bad press. Any press at all just makes us all wonder why Washington voted her in as a senator in the first place.

19. Well, she's at least in the top 100 of current serving senators.......
